Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Delivery devices for delivering a self-expanding prosthetic heart valve are disclosed. The delivery device includes at least one cord is configured to selectively cinch the self-expanding prosthetic heart valve. The delivery device further includes at least one self-expanding release pin comprising a proximal segment, a distal segment, and an intermediate segment positioned between the proximal segment and the distal segment. The at least one self-expanding release pin includes a normal, expanded condition wherein the intermediate segment extends radially outward relative to a central axis of the spindle from the proximal segment to the distal segment. The delivery device further includes a capsule configured to be distally extended relative to the spindle to collapse the at least one self-expanding release pin from the normal, expanded condition of the at least one self-expanding release pin to a collapsed condition of the at least one self-expanding release pin.

What is claimed is: 1. A delivery device for delivering a self-expanding prosthetic heart valve comprising: an inner shaft forming a lumen; a spindle positioned at a distal end of the inner shaft, wherein the spindle defines at least one hole open to the lumen and an exterior of the spindle; at least one cord slidably disposed within the lumen, and each cord of the at least one cord extending through a corresponding hole of the at least one hole, wherein the at least one cord is configured to selectively cinch the self-expanding prosthetic heart valve from a normal, expanded condition to a collapsed condition; and at least one self-expanding release pin comprising a proximal segment, a distal segment, and an intermediate segment positioned between the proximal segment and the distal segment, wherein the at least one self-expanding release pin comprises a normal, expanded condition wherein the intermediate segment extends radially outward relative to a central axis of the spindle from the proximal segment to the distal segment; and a capsule configured to be distally extended relative to the spindle to collapse the at least one self-expanding release pin from the normal, expanded condition of the at least one self-expanding release pin to a collapsed condition of the at least one self-expanding release pin wherein a radial distance between the distal segment and the central axis is reduced. 2. The delivery device of claim 1 , wherein each cord of the at least one cord is releasably coupled to a distal segment of a corresponding self-expanding release pin of the at least one self-expanding release pin. 3. The delivery device of claim 1 , wherein the at least one cord comprises a first cord, a second cord, and a third cord, and the at least one self-expanding release pin comprises a first self-expanding release pin, a second self-expanding release pin, and a third self-expanding release pin. 4. The delivery device of claim 3 , wherein the distal segments of the corresponding first, second, and third self-expanding release pins are approximately equidistantly circumferentially spaced apart within 10% of a truly equidistant circumferential spacing in the normal, expanded condition of the first, second, and third self-expanding release pins. 5. The delivery device of claim 1 , wherein the proximal segment of the at least one self-expanding release pin is coupled to the inner shaft. 6. The delivery device of claim 5 , wherein the at least one self-expanding release pin is configured to be selectively longitudinally locked relative to the inner shaft. 7. The delivery device of claim 1 , wherein the at least one self-expanding release pin comprises a shape memory material. 8. The delivery device of claim 7 , wherein the shape memory material comprises Nitinol. 9. A method of collapsing a self-expanding prosthetic heart valve with the delivery device of claim 1 from a normal, expanded condition of the self-expanding prosthetic heart valve to a collapsed condition of the self-expanding prosthetic heart valve comprising: proximally retracting the at least one cord to cinch the self-expanding prosthetic heart valve to collapse from the normal, expanded condition of the self-expanding prosthetic heart valve to the collapsed condition of the self-expanding prosthetic heart valve; and distally extending the capsule relative to the spindle to collapse the at least one self-expanding release pin from the normal, expanded condition of the at least one self-expanding release pin to the collapsed condition of the at least one-self expanding release pin, wherein distally extending the capsule positions the self-expanding prosthetic heart valve within the capsule while the self-expanding prosthetic heart valve is in the collapsed condition. 10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the at least one self-expanding release pin comprises a first self-expanding release pin, a second self-expanding release pin, and a third self-expanding release pin and the at least one cord comprises a first cord, a second cord, and a third cord, wherein the first cord is releasably attached to the distal segment of the first self-expanding release pin, the second cord is releasably attached to the distal segment of the second self-expanding release pin, and the third cord is releasably attached to the distal segment of the third self-expanding release pin. 11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the distal segments of the corresponding first, second, and third self-expanding release pins are approximately equidistantly circumferentially spaced apart within 10% of a truly equidistant circumferential spacing in the normal, expanded condition of the first, second, and third self-expanding release pins to keep the self-expanding prosthetic heart valve substantially centered relative to the spindle in an at least partially expanded condition of the self-expanding prosthetic heart valve. 12. The method of claim 9 , wherein the at least one self-expanding release pin comprises a shape memory material. 13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the shape memory material comprises Nitinol. 14. The method of claim 9 , wherein the self-expanding prosthetic heart valve comprises a shape memory material. 15. The method of claim 14 , wherein the shape memory material comprises Nitinol. 16. A method of deploying a self-expanding prosthetic heart valve positioned within the capsule of the delivery device of claim 1 from a collapsed condition of the self-expanding prosthetic heart valve within the capsule to an at least partially expanded condition of the self-expanding prosthetic heart valve outside of the capsule comprising: proximally retracting the capsule relative to the spindle to position the self-expanding prosthetic heart valve outside of the capsule while the self-expanding prosthetic heart valve is in the collapsed condition, and to expand the at least one self-expanding release pin from the collapsed condition of the at least one self-expanding release pin to the normal, expanded condition of the at least one self-expanding release pin; and distally extending the at least one cord relative to the self-expanding heart valve to expand the self-expanding prosthetic heart valve from the collapsed condition of the self-expanding prosthetic heart valve to the at least partially expanded condition of the self-expanding prosthetic heart valve. 17. The method of claim 16 , further comprising proximally retracting the at least one self-expanding release pin relative to the self-expanding heart valve to release an attachment of the at least one cord to the distal segment of the at least one release pin, wherein the self-expanding heart valve is released from the delivery device. 18.
