An insulin infusion system is provided with a manual insertion device having a dual retraction spring (230) configuration for automatic introducer needle (222) retraction. A button (200) of the insertion device is used to insert the introducer needle (222) and catheter (202), and once the introducer needle (222) and catheter (202) have been fully inserted, a rotating engagement releases the dual retraction springs (230) such that the introducer needle (222) automatically retracts, leaving the catheter (202) in the body of the user. An end of the introducer needle (222) remains in the inserted catheter (202) and/or in the septum (206) of the inserted catheter (202) to provide an uninterrupted fluid path.

What is claimed is: 1. A method of making an introducer needle subassembly including an introducer needle having a proximal end and a distal end adapted to be inserted into a patient in an insertion direction and an introducer hub including a first end and a second end with a slot therebetween, wherein the method comprises the steps of: forming the introducer hub to comprise at least one spring boss extending in the insertion direction radially offset from the distal end of the introducer needle; inserting the introducer needle having at least one bend therein into the slot of the introducer hub; and securing the introducer needle in the slot on an upper surface of the introducer hub; wherein the inserting step comprises inserting the introducer needle by translating the introducer needle into the slot in a single motion without rotation, and the securing step comprises securing the introducer needle in the slot by snapping the introducer needle in place with a snap disposed on the upper surface of the introducer hub.
