The present disclosure provides alert implants that comprise a medical device and an implantable reporting processor (IRP), where one example of such a medical device includes a component for a total knee arthroplasty (TKA) such as a tibial extension, a femoral component for hip replacements, a breast implant, a distal rod for arm or leg breakage repair, a scoliosis rod, a dynamic hip screw, a spinal interbody spacer, and tooling and methods that may be used to form the alert implant, and uses of such alert implants in the health maintenance of patients who receive the implant.

What is claimed is: 1. A kinematic implantable device, comprising: an inertial measurement unit including a plurality of sensors configured to generate signals based on motion of the kinematic implantable device; a radio configured to communicate with a base station and receive configuration information from the base station, wherein the configuration information includes parameters that specify a data-collection schedule, a communication schedule, a first set of the plurality of sensors, a first sampling rate, a first resolution, a second set of the plurality of sensors different from the first set of the plurality of sensors, a second sampling rate different from the first sampling rate, and a second resolution different from the first resolution; a memory that stores instructions and the configuration information; a processing circuit; and a timing circuit coupled to the processing circuit and the radio, and configured to execute the instructions stored in the memory to: cause the processing circuit to transition from a deep-sleep state to a standby state for a duration specified by the data-collection schedule stored in the memory, and cause the radio to transition from a deep-sleep state to a standby state based on the communication schedule stored in the memory, wherein, when in the standby state, the processing circuit is configured to execute the instructions stored in the memory to: enable the first set of the plurality of sensors for the duration specified by the data-collection schedule, sample the signals generated by the first set of the plurality of sensors at the first sampling rate and the first resolution, and detect a threshold number of kinematic events based on the sampled signals; responsive to a detection of the threshold number of kinematic events, enable the second set of the plurality of sensors, and sample the signals generated by the second set of the plurality of sensors at the second sampling rate and the second resolution; store collected data in the memory, the collected data corresponding to the sampled signals; and when the radio is in the standby state, receive a request for the stored collected data from the base station and in response to receiving the request for the stored collected data, communicate the stored collected data to the base station via the radio. 2. The kinematic implantable device of claim 1 , further comprising a switch electrically coupled between a supply node and the inertial measurement unit, and configured to transition between an opened state and a closed state, wherein to enable the first set of the plurality of sensors for the duration specified by the data-collection schedule: the processing circuit is configured to execute the instructions stored in the memory to cause the switch to transition to the closed state for the duration specified by the data-collection schedule to thereby connect the inertial measurement unit with the supply node. 3. The kinematic implantable device of claim 2 , wherein the processing circuit is configured to execute the instructions stored in the memory at the end of the duration to cause the inertial measurement unit to execute a power down routine, and to cause the switch to transition to the opened state. 4. The kinematic implantable device of claim 2 , wherein the processing circuit is configured to execute the instructions stored in the memory at the end of the duration to cause the memory to execute a power down routine, and to cause the switch to transition to the opened state. 5. The kinematic implantable device of claim 1 , further comprising a switch electrically coupled between a supply node and the memory, and configured to transition between an opened state and a closed state, wherein to store collected data in the memory: the processing circuit is configured to execute the instructions stored in the memory to cause the switch to transition to the closed state for the duration specified by the data-collection schedule to thereby connect the memory with the supply node. 6. The kinematic implantable device of claim 1 , wherein the first set of the plurality of sensors comprises only accelerometers. 7. The kinematic implantable device of claim 1 , wherein the second set of the plurality of sensors comprises a plurality of accelerometers and a plurality of gyroscopes. 8. The kinematic implantable device of claim 1 , wherein the kinematic event comprises a step and the threshold number is greater than one. 9. The kinematic implantable device of claim 1 , wherein the second sampling rate is greater than the first sampling rate and the second resolution is higher than the first resolution. 10. The kinematic implantable device of claim 1 , wherein the data-collection schedule specifies a number of times within a first period that the processing circuit is permitted to transition from the deep-sleep state to the standby state for the duration. 11. The kinematic implantable device of claim 10 , wherein the duration is at least one hour, the number of times is at least one, and the first period is at least one day. 12. The kinematic implantable device of claim 10 , wherein the data-collection schedule further specifies a second period greater than the first period, and within which the processing circuit is permitted to transition from the deep-sleep state to the standby state the duration for and the number of times. 13. The kinematic implantable device of claim 12 , wherein the second period is one week and the first period is at least one day. 14. The kinematic implantable device of claim 10 , wherein the communication schedule specifies a number of times within the first period that the timing circuit is permitted to cause the radio to transition from the deep-sleep state to the standby state, where the number of times is less than the number of times that the timing circuit is permitted to cause the processing circuit to transition from the deep-sleep state to the standby state for the duration. 15. The kinematic implantable device of claim 1 , wherein the processing circuit is configured to execute the instructions stored in the memory to: responsive to a detection of a minimum number of the kinematic events specified in the instructions, disable the second set of the plurality of sensors; and responsive to an expiration of a maximum duration specified in the instructions, disable the second set of the plurality of sensors. 16. The kinematic implantable device of claim 15 , wherein the kinematic event is a step and the minimum number is at least ten. 17. The kinematic implantable device of claim 15 , wherein the maximum duration is at least one minute. 18. The kinematic implantable device of claim 15 , wherein the processing circuit is configured to execute the instructions stored in the memory to: responsive to the detection of the minimum number of the kinematic events, refrain from enabling the second set of the plurality of sensors for the remainder of the duration. 19. The kinematic implantable device of claim 1 , further comprising: a tibial component having a stem with a receptacle; and a housing mechanically coupled with the tibial component and at least partially extending into the receptacle, wherein the inertial measurement unit, the radio, the memory, the timing circuit, and the processing circuit are within the housing. 20.
