A surgical stapling instrument includes an anvil defining a plurality of staple forming pockets and a stapling head assembly. The stapling head assembly includes a body, a coupling member capable of actuating the anvil relative to the body, a staple deck defining a plurality of staple openings, and a firing assembly capable of driving a plurality of staples against the staple forming pockets of the anvil. The firing assembly includes a proximal driving body and an array of discrete staple driving segments positioned distal to the proximal driving body. The proximal driving body is slidably housed within the body. The staple driving segments each have a free proximal end. The proximal driving body is capable of simultaneously actuating the array of staple driving segments to drive the plurality of staples against the staple forming pockets of the anvil.

First claim

We claim: 1. A surgical instrument, comprising: (a) an anvil defining a plurality of staple forming pockets; and (b) a stapling head, comprising: (i) a body, (ii) a coupling shaft configured to actuate relative to the body to thereby actuate the anvil relative to the body, (iii) a staple deck defining a plurality of staple openings and a plurality of channels, wherein each channel of the plurality of channels is in communication with a respective staple opening of the plurality of staples opening, wherein the staple deck is fixed to the body, and (iv) a firing assembly configured to drive a plurality of staples against the staple forming pockets of the anvil, wherein the firing assembly comprises: (A) a proximal actuating body located proximal relative to the plurality of staple openings, and (B) an array of staple driving segments slidably contained within the plurality of staple openings, wherein each staple driving segment in the array of staple driving segments comprises a proximal surface and a tab extending away from the proximal surface, wherein the proximal surface is configured to engage the proximal actuating body, wherein the tab is dimensioned to be slidably received within a respective channel of the plurality of channels defined by the staple deck. 2. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein at least one tab extends away from a respective proximal surface radially inward toward a center of the stapling head. 3. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein the staple deck further comprises a plurality of stop surfaces, wherein each stop surface of the plurality of stop surfaces defines a distal portion of a respective channel. 4. The surgical instrument of claim 3 , wherein the tab of each staple driving segment of the plurality off staple driving segments is configured to engage a respective stop surface of the plurality of stop surfaces thereby inhibiting the array of staple driving segments from disassociating with the staple deck. 5. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein the staple deck comprises an annular shape. 6. The surgical instrument of claim 5 , wherein at least one channel of the plurality of channel extends away from the respective staple opening of the plurality of staple openings toward an interior of the annular shape. 7. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein each tab of the array of staple openings comprises a rectangular shape, wherein each channel of the plurality of channels comprises a complementary rectangular shape. 8. The surgical instruments of claim 1 , wherein the proximal actuating body is configured to drive a portion of each staple driving segments of the array of staple driving segments distally past the staple deck. 9. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein the stapling head further comprise a cylindrical knife. 10. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein the proximal surface and the tab of at least one staple driving segment off the array of staple driving segments comprises a T-shaped profile. 11. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein the proximal actuation body comprises a plurality of pushing bodies terminating proximal relative to the plurality of staple openings. 12. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein the proximal actuating body is configured to drive each tab into the respective channel of the plurality of channels defined by the staple deck. 13. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein the anvil is configured to selectively couple with the coupling shaft of the stapling head. 14. The surgical instrument of claim 13 , wherein the anvil comprises a shank configured to selectively receive the coupling shaft. 15. The surgical instrument of claim 14 , wherein the shank further comprises a pair of resilient legs configured to engage a trocar of the coupling shaft. 16. A surgical instrument, comprising: (a) an anvil defining a plurality of staple forming pockets; and (b) a stapling head assembly comprising: (i) a body, (ii) a trocar configured to actuate relative to the body to thereby actuate the anvil relative to the body, (iii) a staple deck defining a plurality of staple openings and a plurality of channels, wherein each channel of the plurality of channels extends into a respective staple opening of the plurality of staple openings, wherein the staple deck is fixed to the body, and (iv) a firing assembly configured to drive a plurality of staples against the staple forming pockets of the anvil, wherein the firing assembly comprises: (A) a proximal actuating body slidably housed within the body, wherein the proximal actuating body comprises a plurality of pushing bodies terminating proximal relative to the plurality of staple openings, and (B) an array of staple driving segments slidably contained within the plurality of staple openings, wherein the staple driving segments are decoupled from one another such that each staple driving segment of the array of staple driving segments are configured to be individually inserted into a respective opening of the plurality of staple openings, wherein each staple driving segment further comprises a tab dimensioned to fit with a respective channel of the plurality of channels defined by the staple deck. 17. The surgical instrument of claim 16 , wherein the channel terminates into a stop surface dimensioned to inhibit a respective staple driving segment of the array of staple driving segments from disassociating with the staple deck. 18. The surgical instrument of claim 16 , wherein each staple driving segment of the array of staple driving segments comprises a proximal surface configured to engage a respective pushing body of the plurality of pushing bodies. 19. The surgical instrument of claim 16 , further comprising a cylindrical knife. 20. A surgical instrument, comprising: (a) an anvil defining a plurality of staple forming pockets; and (b) a stapling head assembly comprising: (i) a body, (ii) a trocar configured to actuate relative to the body to thereby actuate the anvil relative to the body, (iii) a staple deck defining a plurality of staple openings and a plurality of channels, wherein each channel of the plurality of channels extends into a respective staple opening of the plurality of staple openings, wherein the staple deck is fixed to the body, and (iv) a firing assembly configured to drive a plurality of staples against the staple forming pockets of the anvil, wherein the firing assembly comprises: (A) a proximal actuating body slidably housed within the body, wherein the proximal actuating body comprises a plurality of pushing bodies terminating proximal relative to the plurality of staple openings, and (B) an array of staple driving segments slidably contained within the plurality of staple openings, wherein each staple driving segment of the array of staple driving segments further comprises a tab dimensioned to fit with a respective channel of the plurality of channels defined by the staple deck, wherein the proximal actuating body is configured to simultaneously drive each staple driving segments of the plurality of staple driving segments.
