Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A multi-channel and multi-zone audio environment is provided. Various inventions are disclosed that allow playback devices on one or more networks to provide an effective multi-channel and a multi-zone audio environment using timing information. According to one example, timing information is used to coordinate playback devices connected over a low-latency network to provide audio along with a video display. In another example, timing information is used to coordinate playback devices connected over a mesh network to provide audio in one or more zones or zone groups.

The invention claimed is: 1. A media playback system including a first playback device and at least a second playback device, the media playback system comprising: one or more processors; and tangible, non-transitory computer-readable media comprising instruction code that, when executed by the one or more processors, configures the media playback system to: receive, while the first playback device communicates audio data via the media playback system using a first networking mode, an instruction for the first playback device to join a bonded zone that comprises the second playback device; after receiving the instruction to join the bonded zone, cause the first playback device to communicate, via the second playback device, audio data via the media playback system using a second networking mode that is different from the first networking mode, wherein the second networking mode is configured to facilitate performance of lip synchronization between video content that is output via a display device and audio content that is played back via one or more playback devices of the bonded zone; assign the first playback device a playback role within the bonded zone, wherein assigning the first playback device the playback role within the bonded zone comprises determining one or more first audio channels to be played back via the first playback device; select, based on the determined one or more first audio channels, a first playback delay associated with the assigned playback role; receive, at the first playback device and via the second playback device, the one or more first audio channels; and play back, via the first playback device, the one or more first audio channels according to the first playback delay. 2. The media playback system of claim 1 , wherein when the first playback device communicates audio data within the media playback system using the first networking mode, the first playback device communicates audio data within the media playback system via a first spectrum interface, and wherein when the first playback device communicates audio data within the media playback system using the second networking mode, the first playback device communicates audio data within the media playback system via a second spectrum interface. 3. The media playback system of claim 2 , wherein the first spectrum interface comprises a 2.4 GHz wireless interface and the second spectrum interface comprises a 5 GHz wireless interface. 4. The media playback system of claim 1 , wherein the first networking mode comprises an 802.11 compatible communication protocol. 5. The media playback system of claim 1 , wherein the first networking mode comprises an 802.15 compatible communication protocol. 6. The media playback system of claim 1 , wherein the first playback device comprises a wearable device. 7. The media playback system of claim 1 , wherein the instruction code, when executed by the one or more processors, configures the media playback system to: while the first playback device communicates audio data within the media playback system using the second networking mode, receive an instruction for the first playback device to leave the bonded zone that comprises the second playback device; and after receiving the instruction to leave the bonded zone, cause the first playback device to communicate audio data via the media playback system using the first networking mode. 8. The media playback system of claim 1 , wherein the instruction code, when executed by the one or more processors, configures the media playback system to: while the first playback device communicates audio data within the media playback system using the second networking mode, receive an instruction for the first playback device to leave the bonded zone that comprises the second playback device; and after receiving the instruction to leave the bonded zone, cause the first playback device to communicate audio data via the media playback system using a third networking mode different from both of: (a) the first networking mode and (b) the second networking mode. 9. The media playback system of claim 1 , wherein the second playback device is physically connected to an interface of the display device. 10. The media playback system of claim 1 , wherein when the first playback device communicates audio data within the media playback system using the second networking mode, the first playback device is configured to automatically adjust audio playback to enhance speech content associated with the video content. 11. The media playback system of claim 1 , wherein the instruction code that when executed by the one or more processors configures the media playback system to play back, via the first playback device, the one or more first audio channels according to the first playback delay, configures the media playback system to: play back, via the first playback device, the one or more first audio channels according to the first playback delay in substantial synchrony with playback of one or more second audio channels played back via the second playback device according to a second playback delay, wherein the second playback delay is less than first playback delay. 12. A method comprising: receiving, while a first playback device of a media playback system communicates audio data via the media playback system using a first networking mode, an instruction for the first playback device to join a bonded zone that comprises a second playback device of the media playback system; after receiving the instruction to join the bonded zone, causing the first playback device to communicate, via the second playback device, audio data via the media playback system using a second networking mode that is different from the first networking mode, wherein the second networking mode is configured to facilitate performance of lip synchronization between video content that is output via a display device and audio content that is played back via one or more playback devices of the bonded zone; assigning the first playback device a playback role within the bonded zone, wherein assigning the first playback device the playback role within the bonded zone comprises determining one or more first audio channels to be played back via the first playback device; selecting, based on the determined one or more first audio channels, a first playback delay associated with the assigned playback role; receiving, at the first playback device and via the second playback device, the one or more first audio channels; and playing back, via the first playback device, the one or more first audio channels according to the first playback delay. 13. The method of claim 12 , wherein when the first playback device communicates audio data within the media playback system using the first networking mode, the first playback device communicates audio data within the media playback system via a first spectrum interface, and wherein when the first playback device communicates audio data within the media playback system using the second networking mode, the first playback device communicates audio data within the media playback system via a second spectrum interface. 14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the first spectrum interface comprises a 2.4 GHz wireless interface and the second spectrum interface comprises a 5 GHz wireless interface. 15. The method of claim 12 , wherein the first networking mode comprises an 802.11 compatible communication protocol. 16. The method of claim 12 , wherein the first networking mode comprises an 802.15 compatible communication protocol. 17. The method
