Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

An embodiment of a cradle has a cradle body configured to support a printing device. The cradle has first and second printer capture flanges extending from the cradle body proximate a capture end of the cradle body. The cradle has first and second biased latches extending from the cradle body between the capture end and a release end of the cradle body. The cradle has a biased release member movable between a first position and a release position. The cradle has a release linkage supported by the cradle body, the release linkage coupling the biased release member and the first and second biased latches, wherein the release linkage is structured to drive the first and second biased latches from respective locked positions to respective unlocked positions in response to movement of the biased release member from a first position to a release position.

First claim

The invention claimed is: 1. A system comprising: a first attachment device having a first configuration; a second attachment device having a second configuration that is different from the first configuration; a printer, the first and second attachment devices being interchangeably secured to the printer to reconfigure the printer based on the first and second configurations, the printer has a printer body and at least one of the first attachment device or the second attachment device extends the printer body; and a cradle, wherein the first or second attachment device facilitates securing the printer to the cradle. 2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the printer includes a communication interface, and in response to the first attachment device being removably secured to the printer, the first attachment device is electrically connected to the printer. 3. The system of claim 2 , wherein the first attachment device extends an operation of the printer to include a first new functionality based on the first configuration of the first attachment device. 4. The system of claim 3 , wherein, in response to the second attachment device being removably secured to the printer in place of the first attachment device, the second attachment device is electrically connected to the printer via the communication interface, and the second attachment device extends the operation of the printer to include a second new functionality based on the second configuration of the second attachment device. 5. The system of claim 4 , wherein the first or second new functionality of the printer includes at least one of a magnetic card reader, a smart card reader, or a barcode scanner. 6. The system of claim 1 , wherein, when the first or second attachment device is secured to the printer, the first or second attachment device extends from the printer body and is disposed proximate a front side of the printer body, the first or second attachment device defining at least two capture cavities structured to slideably receive reciprocally structured first and second printer capture flanges extending from the cradle. 7. The system of claim 6 , wherein the first attachment device or the second attachment device includes a first recess and a second recess, the first recess is configured to receive a first biased latch extending from the cradle and the second recess is configured to receive a second biased latch extending from the cradle, the first recess and the second recess comprising first and second recess walls. 8. The system of claim 7 , wherein the first and second biased latches are configured to snap into the first recess and the second recess. 9. A method of manufacturing a printing device to interface with a cradle, the method comprising: providing a first attachment device having a first configuration; providing a second attachment device having a second configuration that is different from the first configuration; configuring the first and second attachment devices to be interchangeably secured to a printer to reconfigure the printer based on the first and second configurations, the printer has a printer body and at least one of the first attachment device or the second attachment device extends the printer body; and providing a cradle, wherein the first or second attachment device facilitates securing the printer to the cradle. 10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the printer includes a communication interface, and the method further comprises removably securing the first attachment device to the printer to electrically connect the first attachment device to the printer. 11. The method of claim 10 , further comprising: extending an operation of the printer to include a first new functionality based on the first configuration of the first attachment device in response the first attachment device being removably secured to the printer. 12. The method of claim 11 , wherein, in response to the second attachment device being removably secured to the printer in place of the first attachment device, the method further comprises: extending the operation of the printer to include a second new functionality based on the second configuration of the second attachment device. 13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the first or second new functionality of the printer includes at least one of a magnetic card reader, a smart card reader, or a barcode scanner.
