Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

An article of footwear includes an upper and a sole structure. The sole structure has a longitudinal extension in a longitudinal direction and a vertical extension in a vertical direction. The sole structure defines a plurality of recesses arranged at least in a rearfoot region thereof and extend at least partially into the sole structure in a transverse direction and along a straight line that extends in the longitudinal direction. Without external forces on the sole structure, each recess of the plurality of recesses is larger in a first direction than in a second direction. The sole structure is configured to provide predetermined dampening and spring deflection characteristics such that, when an external force is applied to the sole structure, the plurality of recesses collapse in a predetermined manner and, when the external force is removed, the plurality of recesses expand back to their original shape.

We claim: 1. An article of footwear, comprising: an upper; and a sole structure having a longitudinal extension in a longitudinal direction and a vertical extension in a vertical direction that is perpendicular to the longitudinal direction, the sole structure defining a plurality of recesses that extend at least partially into the sole structure in a transverse direction that is substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal direction, wherein the plurality of recesses are arranged at least in a rearfoot region of the sole structure and are disposed along a straight line that extends in the longitudinal direction, wherein, without external forces on the sole structure, each recess of the plurality of recesses is larger in a first direction than in a second direction that is substantially perpendicular to the first direction, wherein the sole structure is configured to provide predetermined dampening and spring deflection characteristics such that, when an external force is applied to the sole structure, the plurality of recesses collapse, at least in sections, in a predetermined manner and, when the external force is removed, the plurality of recesses expand back to their original shape, wherein a first recess of the plurality of recesses includes a largest dimension measured in the first direction that is at least 150% larger than a largest dimension measured in the second direction, wherein the first recess is continuously curved along an entire edge, wherein the first recess includes a first end and a second end opposite the first end in the first direction, and wherein the largest dimension measured in the second direction is offset from a midpoint between the first end and the second end. 2. The article of footwear of claim 1 , wherein the first direction is oblique with respect to the longitudinal direction. 3. The article of footwear of claim 2 , wherein the second direction is oblique with respect to the vertical direction. 4. The article of footwear of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of recesses is arranged at least in a midfoot region and the rearfoot region of the sole structure. 5. The article of footwear of claim 1 , wherein each recess of the plurality of recesses has a first dimension in the first direction and a second dimension in the second direction, the first dimension being at least 150% larger than the second dimension. 6. The article of footwear of claim 1 , wherein the sole structure comprises a thermoplastic elastomer (TPE). 7. The article of footwear of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of recesses is arranged in the longitudinal direction over at least 33% of a total distance taken along the longitudinal extension of the sole structure. 8. The article of footwear of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of recesses is defined on a midsole of the sole structure, and wherein the midsole is connected to the upper and an outsole of the sole structure is arranged below the midsole. 9. The article of footwear of claim 1 , wherein, without external forces on the sole structure, each recess of the plurality of recesses has a peripheral contour forming a shape that is non-circular when viewed in the transverse direction. 10. An article of footwear, comprising: an upper; and a sole structure having a longitudinal extension in a longitudinal direction and a vertical extension in a vertical direction that is perpendicular to the longitudinal direction, the sole structure comprising: a midsole connected to the upper, the midsole defining a plurality of recesses that extend at least partly into the midsole in a transverse direction that is substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal direction; and an outsole connected to the midsole, wherein the plurality of recesses is arranged at least in a rearfoot region and a midfoot region of the midsole and are disposed along a straight line that extends in the longitudinal direction, wherein, without external forces on the sole structure, each recess of the plurality of recesses has a peripheral contour when viewed in the transverse direction and has a largest dimension in a first direction and a largest dimension in a second direction that is substantially perpendicular to the first direction, the largest dimension in the first direction being at least 150% larger than the largest dimension in the second direction, wherein the entire peripheral contour is continuously curved, wherein the sole structure is configured such that, when an external force is applied to the sole structure, the plurality of recesses collapse, at least in sections, in a predetermined manner to provide predetermined dampening and spring characteristics, wherein each recess includes a first end and a second end opposite the first end in the first direction, and wherein the largest dimension in the second direction is offset from a midpoint between the first end and the second end. 11. The article of footwear of claim 10 , wherein the first direction is non-parallel with respect to the longitudinal direction. 12. The article of footwear of claim 10 , wherein a shape of the peripheral contour of each recess of the plurality of recesses is non-circular. 13. The article of footwear of claim 12 , wherein the shape of each recess of the plurality of recesses has at least three inflection points. 14. The article of footwear of claim 13 , wherein the midsole comprises a thermoplastic elastomer (TPE). 15. The article of footwear of claim 10 , wherein the largest dimension in the first direction is at least 180% larger than the largest dimension in the second direction. 16. A sole structure of an article of footwear, the sole structure comprising: a midsole; and an outsole connected to the midsole, wherein the sole structure has a longitudinal extension in a longitudinal direction and a vertical extension in a vertical direction that is perpendicular to the longitudinal direction, wherein the midsole defines a plurality of recesses that extend at least partly into the midsole in a transverse direction that is substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal direction, wherein the plurality of recesses are disposed along a straight line that extends in the longitudinal direction and at least some of the recesses of the plurality of recesses are arranged within a rearfoot region of the sole structure, wherein, without external forces on the sole structure, each recess of the plurality of recesses has a peripheral contour forming a shape that is non-circular and continuously curved when viewed in the transverse direction and has a largest dimension in a first direction and a largest dimension in a second direction that is substantially perpendicular to the first direction, the largest dimension in the first direction being at least 150% larger than the largest dimension in the second direction, wherein at least the midsole has elastomeric properties and is configured such that, when an external force is applied to the sole structure, the plurality of recesses collapse, at least in sections, in a predetermined manner to provide predetermined dampening and spring characteristics, wherein each recess includes a first end and a second end opposite the first end in the first direction, and wherein the largest dimension in the second direction is offset from a midpoint between the first end and the second end. 17. The sole structure of claim 16 , wherein the second direction is oblique with respect to the vertical direction. 18. The sole structure of claim 17 , wherein the shape of each recess of the plurality of reces
