A battery includes a battery element, a housing body, and a valve device. The housing body houses the battery element. The valve device is in communication with the inside of the housing body. Heat-sealable resin layers face each other in a peripheral edge portion of the housing body. A joined edge portion in which the mutually facing heat-sealable resin layers are fused together is formed in the peripheral edge portion of the housing body. The valve device is configured to reduce an internal pressure of the housing body if the internal pressure is increased due to gas generated in the housing body. The valve device includes a first portion that is located on an outer side of an edge of the joined edge portion and a second portion that is sandwiched between the heat-sealable resin layers in the joined edge portion.

The invention claimed is: 1. A heat sealing apparatus configured to be used to manufacture a battery, wherein the battery includes: a battery element; a housing body that is constituted by at least one laminate including at least a base material layer, a barrier layer, and a heat-sealable resin layer layered in that order and houses the battery element; and a valve device that is in communication with the inside of the housing body, sections of the heat-sealable resin layer of the at least one laminate face each other in a peripheral edge portion of the housing body, a joined edge portion in which the mutually facing sections of the heat-sealable resin layer of the at least one laminate are fused together is formed in the peripheral edge portion of the housing body, the valve device is configured to reduce an internal pressure of the housing body if the internal pressure is increased due to gas generated in the housing body, the valve device includes a first portion that is located on an outer side of an outer edge of the joined edge portion and a second portion that is sandwiched between the sections of the heat-sealable resin layer of the at least one laminate in the joined edge portion, the heat sealing apparatus comprising: seal heads configured to sandwich outer surfaces of a sandwiching portion of the peripheral edge portion of the housing body where the second portion is sandwiched between the sections of the heat-sealable resin layer of the at least one laminate; and a heater configured to heat the seal heads, wherein raised or recessed portions are formed in sandwiching surfaces of the seal heads that sandwich the outer surfaces of the sandwiching portion, the raised or recessed portions are constituted by linear protrusions formed on the sandwiching surfaces, the linear protrusions extend in a direction that matches a width direction of the battery when the heat sealing apparatus is used, and the linear protrusions have a height of 0.05 mm to 1 mm. 2. A method for manufacturing the battery by using the heat sealing apparatus according to claim 1 , comprising: heating the seal heads; and sandwiching, between the seal heads, the outer surfaces of the sandwiching portion of the peripheral edge portion of the housing body where the second portion is sandwiched between the heat-sealable resin layers. 3. A heat sealing apparatus configured to be used to manufacture a battery, wherein the battery includes: a battery element; a housing body that is constituted by at least one laminate including at least a base material layer, a barrier layer, and a heat-sealable resin layer layered in that order and houses the battery element; and a valve device that is in communication with the inside of the housing body, sections of the heat-sealable resin layer of the at least one laminate face each other in a peripheral edge portion of the housing body, a joined edge portion in which the mutually facing sections of the heat-sealable resin layer of the at least one laminate are fused together is formed in the peripheral edge portion of the housing body, the valve device is configured to reduce an internal pressure of the housing body if the internal pressure is increased due to gas generated in the housing body, the valve device includes a first portion that is located on an outer side of an outer edge of the joined edge portion and a second portion that is sandwiched between the sections of the heat-sealable resin layer of the at least one laminate in the joined edge portion, the heat sealing apparatus comprising: seal heads configured to sandwich outer surfaces of a sandwiching portion of the peripheral edge portion of the housing body where the second portion is sandwiched between the sections of the heat-sealable resin layer of the at least one laminate; and a heater configured to heat the seal heads, wherein raised or recessed portions are formed in sandwiching surfaces of the seal heads that sandwich the outer surfaces of the sandwiching portion, the raised or recessed portions are constituted by a satin finish surface provided on the sandwiching surfaces, and the satin finish surface has a surface roughness Ra of 1 μm to 20 μm. 4. A method for manufacturing the battery by using the heat sealing apparatus according to claim 3 , comprising: heating the seal heads; and sandwiching, between the seal heads, the outer surfaces of the sandwiching portion of the peripheral edge portion of the housing body where the second portion is sandwiched between the heat-sealable resin layers.
