Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A medical sensor device includes a sensor assembly including an underside surface for attachment against a patient's skin, a sensor portion to detect a characteristic of the patient, and sensor assembly contacts which in operation carry signals representing the detected characteristic. The device also includes a transmitter assembly removably engageable with the sensor assembly and including circuitry to take the signals from the sensor assembly contacts and to transmit readings of the detected characteristic to external equipment. The device also includes mechanical interface components on the sensor assembly and the transmitter assembly which allow the transmitter assembly to be brought into abutment with the sensor assembly at a first angular position via relative axial movement between them, and then allow a relative rotation of the assemblies with respect to one another towards a second angular position and presents axial separation of the assemblies in the second angular position.

What is claimed is: 1. A medical sensor comprising: a transmitter unit for communicating sensed values to external equipment, the transmitter unit having a top side, a bottom side opposite the top side, and a first coupling interface; a sensor base for attachment to a patient and having a platform for mounting of the transmitter unit, the platform including a location area, the sensor base having a top side, a bottom side opposite the top side of the sensor base, and a second coupling interface, wherein the bottom side of the sensor base is configured to be positioned proximate the patient's body when the sensor base is attached to the patient; a sensor device supported by the sensor base, the sensor device including a sensor portion extending from the bottom side of the sensor base, wherein the sensor portion is configured to be inserted subcutaneously into the patient's body; conductive leads coupled to the sensor device, the conductive leads terminating in contacts secured within the location area; and an elastomeric connector mounted within the location area and having conductive regions in contact with the contacts of the conductive leads, the elastomeric connector having conductive areas on a face of the elastomeric connector to couple to the transmitter unit, wherein the transmitter unit is configured to be mounted to the sensor base by positioning the bottom side of the transmitter unit proximate the top side of the sensor base while the transmitter unit is in a first angular position and then rotating the transmitter unit about an axis of rotation with respect to the sensor base to a second angular position so that the first coupling interface of the transmitter unit mates with the second coupling interface of the sensor base to secure the transmitter unit to the sensor base, thereby preventing axial separation of the transmitter unit and the sensor base, wherein the axis of rotation is substantially normal to the top side of the sensor base. 2. A medical sensor according to claim 1 , wherein the contacts are spaced at a first pitch and wherein the conductive regions of the elastomeric connector comprise conductive layers interspersed by insulative layers at a second pitch where the second pitch is finer than the first pitch. 3. A medical sensor according to claim 1 , further comprising fasteners for mounting the transmitter unit on the sensor base; wherein the contacts are arranged in the location area in a line radially with respect to the axis of rotation; and the transmitter unit has contacts on a surface facing the elastomeric connector corresponding to and in connection with the contacts secured in the location area when the transmitter unit is at the second angular position. 4. A medical sensor according to claim 1 , wherein contacts further from the axis of rotation are longer in a circumferential direction than contacts closer to the axis. 5. A medical sensor according to claim 3 , wherein the fasteners include a manually releasable latch to secure the transmitter unit in the second angular position when it is mounted on the sensor base. 6. A medical sensor according to claim 1 wherein the location area is a trough, or depression in the platform. 7. A medical sensor according to claim 1 , wherein: the transmitter unit comprises a bottom surface and transmitter contacts to establish contact with the elastomeric connector; and the transmitter contacts are flush with the bottom surface of the transmitter unit. 8. A medical sensor according to claim 7 , wherein: the transmitter unit comprises a circuit board and a transmitter elastomeric connector; and the transmitter elastomeric connector electrically couples the transmitter contacts to the circuit board. 9. A medical sensor according to claim 1 , wherein: the sensor base comprises a sensor head cavity formed therein; the sensor device comprises a sensor head held in place within the sensor head cavity; and the elastomeric connector is retained in the sensor head cavity overlying the sensor head, such that the conductive regions of the elastomeric connector are in contact with the contacts of the conductive leads. 10. A medical sensor according to claim 9 , further comprising a rib structure to retain the elastomeric connector, the rib structure providing dead volume to accommodate expansion of the elastomeric connector. 11. A medical sensor according to claim 1 , wherein the elastomeric connector is an elastomeric z-axis connector that includes alternating conductive and insulating regions that produce anisotropic conductive properties. 12. A medical sensor according to claim 11 , wherein: the transmitter unit comprises transmitter contacts to establish contact with the elastomeric connector; and the transmitter contacts are arranged for alignment with the alternating conductive regions of the elastomeric z-axis connector. 13. A medical sensor according to claim 1 , wherein the sensor device comprises a double-sided sensor having two discrete single-sided sensors placed back-to-back. 14. A medical sensor according to claim 13 , wherein: the elastomeric connector comprises an upper elastomeric connector and a lower elastomeric connector; and the double-sided sensor is sandwiched between the upper elastomeric connector and the lower elastomeric connector. 15. A medical sensor according to claim 14 , wherein the transmitter unit comprises transmitter contacts to establish contact with the upper elastomeric connector or the lower elastomeric connector. 16. A medical sensor comprising: a transmitter unit for communicating sensed values to external equipment, the transmitter unit comprising electrical transmitter contacts and having a top side, a bottom side, and a first coupling interface; a sensor base for attachment to a patient, the sensor base comprising a platform for mounting of the transmitter unit, and the sensor base comprising a sensor head cavity formed therein, the sensor base having a top side, a bottom side, and a second coupling interface, wherein the bottom side of the sensor base is configured to be positioned proximate the patient's body when the sensor base is attached to the patient; a sensor device supported by the sensor base, the sensor device comprising a sensor head held in place within the sensor head cavity, and the sensor device comprising electrical sensor contacts on the sensor head, the sensor device including a sensor portion extending from the bottom side of the sensor base, wherein the sensor portion is configured to be inserted subcutaneously into the patient's body; and an elastomeric connector mounted within the sensor head cavity, and overlying the sensor head, the elastomeric connector comprising conductive regions in contact with the electrical sensor contacts, the conductive regions having areas facing the transmitter unit to establish contact with the electrical transmitter contacts when the transmitter unit is mounted to the sensor base, wherein the transmitter unit is configured to be mounted to the sensor base by positioning the bottom side of the transmitter unit proximate the top side of the sensor base while the transmitter unit is in a first angular position and then rotating the transmitter unit about an axis of rotation with respect to the sensor base to a second angular position so that the first coupling interface of the transmitter unit engages the second coupling interface of the sensor base, thereby preventing axial separation of the transmitter unit and the sensor base, wherein the axis of rotation is substantially normal to the top side of the sensor base
