Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

An electrified vehicle includes a chassis, a cab coupled to the chassis, a body assembly coupled to the chassis, and an energy storage system. The body assembly is positioned behind the cab with a space defined therebetween. The energy storage system is positioned within the space between the cab and the body assembly. The energy storage system includes a housing and a plurality of battery cells disposed within the housing. The housing is coupled directly to the chassis and extends upward from the chassis such that a portion of the housing is positioned above at least a portion of a roof of the cab.

The invention claimed is: 1. An electrified vehicle comprising: a chassis; a cab coupled to the chassis; a body assembly coupled to the chassis, the body assembly positioned behind the cab with a space defined therebetween; and an energy storage system positioned within the space between the cab and the body assembly, the energy storage system including: a housing coupled directly to the chassis and extending upward from the chassis such that a portion of the housing is positioned above at least a portion of a roof of the cab; and a plurality of battery cells disposed within the housing. 2. The electrified vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the energy storage system includes power control hardware disposed within the housing. 3. The electrified vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of battery cells are removable from the housing. 4. The electrified vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the energy storage system is positioned to distribute weight forward of a rear axle of the electrified vehicle to reduce loading on the rear axle. 5. The electrified vehicle of claim 1 , further comprising a generator configured to facilitate charging the energy storage system. 6. The electrified vehicle of claim 1 , further comprising an electric motor, wherein the energy storage system is configured to provide electric power to the electric motor. 7. The electrified vehicle of claim 6 , wherein the electric motor is configured to drive at least one of a front axle or a rear axle of the electrified vehicle. 8. The electrified vehicle of claim 7 , further comprising: the front axle coupled to the chassis; and the rear axle coupled to the chassis. 9. The electrified vehicle of claim 6 , wherein the electric motor is configured to drive a fluid system of the electrified vehicle. 10. The electrified vehicle of claim 6 , wherein the electric motor is configured to selectively drive (a) an axle of the electrified vehicle and (b) a fluid system of the electrified vehicle. 11. The electrified vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of battery cells are a first plurality of battery cells, further comprising a second plurality of battery cells positioned outside of the space between the cab and the body assembly. 12. The electrified vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the electrified vehicle is a truck. 13. An electrified vehicle comprising: a chassis; a cab coupled to the chassis; a body coupled to the chassis; and an energy storage system positioned between the cab and the body, the energy storage system including: a housing coupled directly to and extending upward from the chassis, the housing extending above at least a portion of a roof of the cab; a plurality of battery cells disposed within the housing; and power control hardware disposed within the housing. 14. The electrified vehicle of claim 13 , wherein the electrified vehicle is a truck. 15. The electrified vehicle of claim 13 , wherein the plurality of battery cells are a first plurality of battery cells, further comprising a second plurality of battery cells positioned outside of the housing. 16. The electrified vehicle of claim 13 , further comprising a generator configured to facilitate charging the energy storage system. 17. The electrified vehicle of claim 13 , further comprising: at least one of an axle or a fluid system; and an electric motor electrically coupled to the energy storage system, wherein the electric motor is configured to drive the at least one of the axle or the fluid system. 18. The electrified vehicle of claim 17 , wherein the electrified vehicle includes the axle and the fluid system, and wherein the electric motor is configured to drive the axle and the fluid system. 19. An electrified vehicle comprising: a chassis; a front axle coupled to the chassis; a rear axle coupled to the chassis; an electric motor configured to drive at least one of the front axle or the rear axle; a cab coupled to the chassis; a body coupled to the chassis, the body positioned behind the cab with a space defined therebetween; and an energy storage system including a housing coupled to the chassis within the space between the cab and the body, wherein a portion of the housing is positioned above at least a portion of a roof of the cab.
