Present embodiments provide various open coil spring assemblies which perform like an encased spring assembly. The embodiments have elastic lacings or connections which connect springs to springs or springs to lacings. Various spring embodiments are provided as well as various arrangements for the elastic lacings. All of these features improve compliance and stability while reducing motion transfer.

What is claimed is: 1. An open coil spring assembly, comprising: a plurality of rows of open coil springs arranged in a matrix, each of the open coil springs including an upper end convolution, a lower end convolution, and a plurality of helical convolutions that extend between the upper end convolution and the lower end convolution, the upper end convolution having a first flattened portion adjacent to the plurality of helical convolutions and located on a first side of the open coil spring, and a second flattened portion adjacent to a terminal end of the open coil spring and located on a second side of the open coil spring opposite the first side, and a plurality of upper lacings each connecting one or more of the open coil springs, each of the plurality of upper lacings receiving the first flattened portion of a first open coil spring of a first of the plurality of rows and the second flattened portion of a second open coil spring of a second of the plurality of rows, and each upper lacing extending along a longitudinal axis; wherein, the first flattened portion of the first open coil spring is offset and aligned with the second flattened portion of the second open coil spring along the longitudinal axis of the upper lacing, such that the first flattened portion of the first coil spring and the second flattened portion of the second coil spring are adjacent to one another without overlapping when connected with the upper lacing. 2. The open coil spring assembly of claim 1 , wherein, when each open coil spring is viewed perpendicular to the upper end convolution, the plurality of helical convolutions that extend between the upper end convolution and the lower end convolution have a diameter and the first flattened portion and the second flattened portion extend beyond the diameter such that the plurality of upper lacings are positioned between the plurality of helical convolutions that extend between the upper end convolution and the lower end convolution of the open coil springs. 3. The open coil spring assembly of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of upper lacings are helical wires that coil around the first flattened portion of the first open coil spring and the second flattened portion of the second open coil spring. 4. The open coil spring assembly of claim 3 , wherein a first plurality of convolutions of the helical wire coil around the first flattened portion of the first open coil spring and a second plurality of convolutions of the helical wire coil around the second flattened portion of the second open coil spring, the second plurality of convolutions being different than the first plurality of convolutions. 5. The open coil spring assembly of claim 1 , wherein the first flatted portion includes two sections such that the second flattened portion of the second open coil spring is positioned between the two sections of the first flattened portion of the first open coil spring along the longitudinal axis of the upper lacing. 6. The open coil spring assembly of claim 1 , wherein the first flatted portion includes three sections and the second flattened portion includes two sections such that the three sections of the first flattened portion of the first open coil spring alternate with the two sections of the second flatted portion of the second open coil spring along the longitudinal axis of the upper lacing.
