Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

The present disclosure provides compositions and methods for metathesizing a first alkenyl or alkynyl group with a second alkenyl or alkynyl group, the composition comprising a ruthenium metathesis catalyst and a photoredox catalyst that is activated by visible light.

First claim

What is claimed is: 1. A composition for metathesizing a first alkenyl or alkynyl group with a second alkenyl or alkynyl group, comprising: (i) a ruthenium metathesis catalyst that is (SIMes) 2 RuCl 2 CHPh or (IMes) 2 RuCl 2 CHPh: and (ii) a photoredox catalyst that is: Ferrocenium hexafluorophosphate, 2. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the photoredox catalyst is activated by visible light at a wavelength of about 350 nm to about 750 nm. 3. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the ruthenium metathesis catalyst is (SIMes) 2 RuCl 2 CHPh. 4. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the ruthenium metathesis complex is (IMes) 2 RuCl 2 CHPh. 5. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the photoredox catalyst is ferrocenium hexafluorophosphate. 6. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the photoredox catalyst is 7. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the photoredox catalyst is 8. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the photoredox catalyst is 9. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the photoredox catalyst is 10. A method for chemical metathesis, comprising applying visible light to the composition of claim 1 in the presence of a ruthenium metathesis catalyst and a photoredox catalyst that is activated by visible light. 11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the visible light has a wavelength of about 350 nm to about 750 nm. 12. The method of claim 10 , that is performed at a temperature of about 20 to about 30° C. 13. The method of claim 10 , comprising about 0.01 to about 10 mol %, based on the mol % of the one compound or first and second compound, of the ruthenium metathesis catalyst. 14. The method of claim 10 , wherein the concentration of the one compound or first and second compound is about 0.01 to about 5 M.
