Base station antennas include an externally accessible active antenna module releasably coupled to a recessed segment that is over a chamber in the base station antenna and that is longitudinally and laterally extending along and across a rear of a base station antenna housing. The base station antenna housing has a passive antenna assembly that cooperates with the active antenna module.

That which is claimed is: 1. A base station antenna comprising: a housing of a base station antenna comprising a passive antenna assembly in the housing; and left and right side external mounting members that project rearward from a rear of the housing and extend along only a sub-length of the housing between a top portion and a longitudinally spaced apart medial portion of the housing, wherein the left and right side external mounting members are laterally spaced apart and extend in a longitudinal direction of the base station antenna, and wherein the left and right side mounting members are attached to the rear of the housing and extend continuously along the sub-length. 2. The base station antenna of claim 1 , wherein the left and right side external mounting members terminate above the medial portion of the housing. 3. The base station antenna of claim 1 , wherein the rear has a recessed segment that extends laterally and longitudinally for a sub-length of the housing, wherein the left and right side external mounting members extend along a portion of the recessed segment, and wherein the left and right side external mounting members terminate above a lower end of the recessed segment. 4. The base station antenna of claim 1 , wherein the left and right side external mounting members comprise left and right side external rails. 5. The base station antenna of claim 1 , wherein the left and right side external mounting members are electrically coupled to a reflector in the housing. 6. The base station antenna of claim 1 , wherein the left and right side external mounting members are configured to electrically couple to an active antenna module releasably attachable to the left and right side mounting members. 7. The base station antenna of claim 1 , wherein the left and right side external mounting members are configured to receive fixation members that attach an active antenna module to position the active antenna module behind and along a portion of the housing. 8. The base station antenna of claim 1 , wherein a bottom end of the left and right side external mounting members terminate at or above a medial location of the housing, and wherein a top end of the left and right side external mounting members terminate a distance below a top end of the housing. 9. The base station antenna of claim 1 , further comprising left and right side internal rails that are laterally spaced and that longitudinally extend inside the housing, wherein the left side internal rail is coupled to the left side external mounting member, wherein the right side internal rail is coupled to the right side external mounting member, and wherein the left and right side internal rails have a longer length in the longitudinal direction than the left and right side external mounting members. 10. The base station antenna of claim 1 , further comprising first and second laterally extending support members in the housing that are positioned between longitudinally extending internal rails in the housing. 11. The base station antenna of claim 1 , further comprising first and second cross-members coupled to first and second internal rails that together surround a window comprising a frequency selective surface and/or substrate (FSS), wherein the FSS is positioned between the left and right side external mounting members and is configured to reside in front of an active antenna module held behind the rear of the housing. 12. The base station antenna of claim 1 , further comprising first and second internal rails in the housing that are coupled to the left and right side mounting members and to a reflector in the housing. 13. The base station antenna of claim 1 , wherein the left and right side external mounting members are left and right side external rails, wherein the base station antenna further comprises a bolt that extends through a first internal rail in the housing, a rear wall of the housing and one of the left or right side external rails. 14.
