Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A cooler is provided which has various improvements. The cooler may be a passive cooler or may be actively cooled for providing desirable cooling effects. The cooler may include an accessory system, for example, with bottle or can holders or a post holder which utilizes the weight of the cooler to support a sunshade. The accessory system may be positioned in various locations of the cooler, one location being in a recess which is utilized to open the cooler lid. The smart cooler may also comprise a cushion assembly which may be placed on an upper surface of the lid and may have straps to retain the cushion on the lid. The lid may be formed to accept and retain a cushion retaining feature so that the cushion does not excessively move from the top surface of the lid.

The invention claimed is: 1. A cooler, comprising: a base having a plurality of sides extending from a bottom and defining a basin; an upper edge of said plurality of sides defining an opening into said basin; a lid pivotally connected to said base, said lid having an indentation on an upper surface thereof; said lid comprising channels along opposite edges of said lid; a first lid grip and a second lid grip extending from a front surface of said lid, a first aperture extending through said first lid grip and a second aperture extending through said second lid grip; a lid latch extending through each of said first aperture and said second aperture of said first lid grip and said second lid grip, each of said lid latch having a latch base and a latch strap, said latch strap comprising at least one catch aperture, wherein each said base of each said lid latch is larger than said latch strap so that each said latch strap passes through said first aperture and said second aperture respectively, and an upper surface of each said base is substantially flush with an upper surface of respective of said first lid grip and said second lid grip; a catch disposed on said base below each of said first lid grip and said second lid grip, said catch capable of engaging said at least one catch aperture to retain said lid in a closed configuration. 2. The cooler of claim 1 , said channels allowing for passage of a strap therethrough. 3. The cooler of claim 1 , further comprising a recess on a front surface of said base. 4. The cooler of claim 3 , wherein access to said recess is closed by said lid. 5. The cooler of claim 3 , said recess having edges which create a space for placement and retention of accessories. 6. The cooler of claim 1 , further comprising a cushion capable of positioning on said lid. 7. A cooler, comprising: a base having a bottom and a plurality of sides extending from said bottom; a basin defined by said plurality of sides and bottom wherein goods can be stored; an opening into said basin defined by an upper edge of said plurality of sides; a lid disposed at the top of the base, said lid pivotally connected to said base to open or close access to said basin; an indentation of an upper surface of said lid; a first channel in said lid and a second channel in said lid, said second channel disposed opposite to said first channel; a first lid latch and a second lid latch extending from a front surface of said lid, each said first lid latch and said second lid latch having a latch base and a latch strap; a latch aperture disposed in each of the first lid latch and the second lid latch; said latch strap of each of said first lid latch and said second lid latch extending through a corresponding one of a first lid grip or a second lid grip; each of said latch base being oversized relative to an inner portion of each of said latch aperture, so that said base is retained in said latch aperture and an upper surface of each said latch base is flush with said first lid grip or said second lid grip, respectively; a catch disposed beneath each of the first lid grip and the second lid grip, each said catch being engaged by a corresponding one of said first lid latch or said second lid latch; and, a recess formed on a front surface of said base, said recess capable of retaining one or more accessories that may be connected to said cooler. 8. The cooler of claim 7 , said one or more accessories comprising a bottle opener. 9. The cooler of claim 7 , said one or more accessories comprising a beverage holder. 10. The cooler of claim 7 , said one or more accessories comprising a container. 11. The cooler of claim 7 , said first lid latch and said second lid latch extending forward beyond said front surface of said base.
