Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Various embodiments disclosed herein relate to stemmed and stemless humeral anchors for use in shoulder arthroplasty procedures. For example, the humeral anchor can include a first end, a second end, and an interior surface extending between the first end and the second end. The interior surface can be disposed about a recess disposed between the first end and the second end. The recess can be configured to secure a coupling of a shoulder articular body directly to the interior surface.

What is claimed is: 1. A monolithic humeral anchor, comprising: a distal portion including a stem extending proximally from a distal end of the monolithic humeral anchor, the distal portion configured to fit within an intramedullary canal formed in a humerus when implanted; a proximal portion extending distally from a proximal end of the monolithic humeral anchor, the proximal end including a cancellous bone interface including: a flange extending outwardly from the proximal end of the proximal portion and including a circular outer periphery and a distal facing bone compression surface having a width that varies around the outer periphery, and a porous zone disposed adjacent to the flange and configured for bone in-growth; a recess extending distally from the proximal end and into the proximal portion of the monolithic humeral anchor; and an inner periphery defining the recess and located adjacent to the proximal end of the monolithic humeral anchor, the inner periphery comprising: a concave locking feature disposed in the inner periphery; and a convex locking feature disposed in the inner periphery, the concave locking feature spaced apart from the convex locking feature. 2. The monolithic humeral anchor of claim 1 , wherein the concave locking feature comprises a first concave locking feature and a second concave locking feature disposed opposite the first concave locking feature. 3. The monolithic humeral anchor of claim 2 , wherein the first concave locking feature and the second concave locking features are disposed at medial and lateral portions of the humeral anchor respectively. 4. The monolithic humeral anchor of claim 2 , wherein the convex locking feature comprises a first convex locking feature and a second convex locking feature disposed opposite the first convex locking feature. 5. The monolithic humeral anchor of claim 4 , wherein the first convex locking feature and the second convex locking features are disposed at anterior and posterior portions of the humeral anchor respectively. 6. The monolithic humeral anchor of claim 1 , wherein the concave locking feature is configured to provide an interference fit for an articular body comprising a concave articular surface. 7. The monolithic humeral anchor of claim 1 , wherein the convex locking feature comprises an elongate fin projecting toward the recess. 8. The monolithic humeral anchor of claim 1 , wherein a width of the bone compression surface tapers around the proximal portion. 9. The monolithic humeral anchor of claim 1 , wherein the flange is shaped to specifically match a patient's anatomy based on imaging performed before surgery. 10. A stemless humeral anchor, comprising: a distal portion extending proximally from a distal end of the stemless humeral anchor, the distal portion configured to occupy a portion of a metaphysis of a humerus when implanted; a proximal portion extending distally from a proximal end of the stemless humeral anchor; a recess extending distally from the proximal end of the stemless humeral anchor and into the proximal portion; and an inner periphery disposed about the recess adjacent to the proximal end of the stemless humeral anchor, the inner periphery comprising: a concave locking feature disposed in the inner periphery; and a convex locking feature disposed in the inner periphery, the concave locking feature spaced apart from the convex locking feature. 11. The stemless humeral anchor of claim 10 , wherein the distal portion comprises a first section and a second section distal the first section, the second section comprising a fin extending distally from the first section. 12. The stemless humeral anchor of claim 11 , wherein the second section comprises a plurality of fins extending distally from the first section. 13. The stemless humeral anchor of claim 11 , wherein the first section comprises a second recess distal the recess. 14. A humeral anchor, comprising: a distal portion extending proximally from a distal end of the humeral anchor, the distal portion configured to occupy a portion of a metaphysis of a humerus when implanted; a proximal portion extending distally from a proximal end of the humeral anchor and having an outer surface that is enlarged to occupy at least a majority of the volume of a metaphysis of a humerus into which the humeral anchor is to be disposed, the proximal portion having a lateral side configured to be disposed adjacent to a cortical wall of a lateral portion of a humeral metaphysis and a medial side configured to be spaced apart from a cortical wall of a medial side of the humeral metaphysis; and a bone compression surface disposed at the proximal end of the humeral anchor, the bone compression surface being disposed about the medial side of the proximal portion and being configured to extend from the medial side of the proximal portion to the cortical wall of the medial side of the humeral metaphysis when implanted in a humerus, wherein the bone compression surface comprises a flange that extends outward from the proximal end of the proximal portion of the humeral anchor. 15. The humeral anchor of claim 14 , wherein the flange comprises a circular outer periphery having a radius corresponding to a radius of the lateral side of the proximal portion. 16. The humeral anchor of claim 14 , further comprising an annular surface disposed at a proximal face of the humeral anchor, the flange comprising a portion of the annular surface of a proximal face. 17. The humeral anchor of claim 14 , further comprising rotational orientation indicia formed on or in the annular surface disposed at the proximal face of the humeral anchor. 18. The humeral anchor of claim 14 , further comprising a recess extending distally from the proximal end of the humeral anchor and into the proximal portion and an inner periphery disposed about the recess adjacent to the proximal end of the humeral anchor, the inner periphery comprising a locking feature disposed in the inner periphery, the locking features being aligned with the bone compression surface. 19. The humeral anchor of claim 14 , wherein the humeral anchor comprises a stemless humeral anchor. 20. The humeral anchor of claim 14 , wherein the distal end of the humeral anchor includes a stem.
