A battery module includes a module housing, a gauge hole formed in the module housing, a plurality of battery cells in the module housing, a cell pressing plate accommodated in the module housing, and a swelling gauge provided to protrude from a surface of the cell pressing plate. The plurality of battery cells have a normal state and a swelling state. An end of the swelling gauge extends outside the module housing when the plurality of battery cells are in the normal state.

What is claimed is: 1. A battery module, the battery module comprising: a module housing; at least two gauge holes formed in the module housing; a plurality of battery cells in the module housing; a cell pressing plate accommodated in the module housing; and at least two swelling gauges provided to protrude from a surface of the cell pressing plate, wherein the plurality of battery cells have a normal state and a swelling state, and wherein an end of each swelling gauge extends outside the module housing when the plurality of battery cells are in the normal state. 2. The battery module according to claim 1 , wherein the cell pressing plate being between the plurality of battery cells and the at least two swelling gauges. 3. The battery module according to claim 2 , wherein the cell pressing plate and the at least two swelling gauges are integrally formed. 4. The battery module according to claim 2 , wherein the at least two swelling gauges include: a first swelling gauge located at the center of the cell pressing plate; and a second swelling gauge at a first longitudinal edge regions of the cell pressing plate, and a third swelling gauge at a second longitudinal edge region of the cell pressing plate. 5. The battery module according to claim 1 , wherein each swelling gauge has a scale indicating an amount each swelling gauge extends outside the module housing. 6. The battery module according to claim 1 , further comprising: a buffering member interposed between the cell pressing plate and the module housing. 7. The battery module according to claim 6 , wherein the buffering member is a leaf spring. 8. The battery module according to claim 2 , further comprising: a buffering member interposed between the cell pressing plate and the module housing. 9. The battery module according to claim 8 , wherein the buffering member is a leaf spring. 10. The battery module according to claim 1 , wherein each swelling gauge moves freely within a respective gauge hole. 11. The battery module according to claim 1 , wherein each gauge hole has no obstructions to the movement of the at least two swelling gauges. 12. A battery pack, comprising the battery module according to claim 1 . 13. The battery module according to claim 1 , wherein the swelling gauge is a linear member. 14. A battery module, the battery module comprising: a module housing; a gauge hole formed in the module housing; a plurality of battery cells in the module housing; a cell pressing plate accommodated in the module housing; a swelling gauge provided to protrude from a surface of the cell pressing plate; and a leaf spring interposed between the cell pressing plate and the module housing, wherein the plurality of battery cells have a normal state and a swelling state, and wherein an end of the swelling gauge extends outside the module housing when the plurality of battery cells are in the normal state.
