Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Electric vehicle battery pack whose cover is more fully sealed against leakage. The cover is connected to the battery pack frame by fasteners that are affixed to the surface of the cover rather than being fastened through holes therein, or that are sealed to prevent leakage. The cover thus has no, fewer, or sealed holes formed within, and thus has fewer pathways for leakage or infiltration of moisture into the battery pack.

What is claimed is: 1. A battery pack comprising: a battery enclosure member partially defining an interior space for a battery; at least one crossmember extending across the interior space, wherein the at least one crossmember comprises an attachment surface extending across the interior space; and a cover having an outer portion along an outer edge, wherein: the cover is configured to be secured to the attachment surface; the outer portion extends downward from an inner portion towards an upper surface of the battery enclosure member; and the outer portion comprises a bottom surface that faces the upper surface of the battery enclosure member. 2. The battery pack of claim 1 , further comprising: a seal arranged between and contacting the bottom surface of the outer portion and the upper surface of the battery enclosure member. 3. The battery pack of claim 1 , wherein: the battery extends above the upper surface of the battery enclosure member. 4. The battery pack of claim 1 , wherein: the battery extends above the bottom surface of the cover. 5. The battery pack of claim 1 , further comprising: one or more fasteners coupling the outer portion of the cover to the upper surface of the battery enclosure member. 6. The battery pack of claim 1 , wherein the outer portion of the cover that extends downward surrounds the inner portion of the cover. 7. The battery pack of claim 1 , wherein the outer portion of the cover comprises a plurality of holes extending therethrough. 8. The battery pack of claim 1 , wherein the battery enclosure member comprises two side members, wherein the at least one crossmember extends between the two side members. 9. The battery pack of claim 8 , wherein the upper surface of the battery enclosure member is an upper surface of the two side members. 10. The battery pack of claim 8 , further comprising one or more fasteners for coupling the inner portion of the cover to the at least one crossmember. 11. A cover for an electric vehicle battery pack, the cover comprising: an inner portion configured to be secured to an attachment surface of at least one crossmember extending across the cover; and an outer portion surrounding the inner portion, wherein: the outer portion comprises a bottom surface that faces an upper surface of a battery enclosure member; and the outer portion extends downward from the inner portion towards the upper surface of the battery enclosure member. 12. The cover of claim 11 , further comprising a seal arranged along the outer portion and facing the upper surface of the battery enclosure member. 13. The cover of claim 11 , wherein the outer portion of the cover comprises a plurality of holes extending therethrough. 14. The cover of claim 13 , further comprising a plurality of fasteners extending through the plurality of holes. 15. The cover of claim 11 , further comprising a plurality of fasteners arranged on the inner portion of the cover configured to couple the cover to the at least one crossmember. 16. A battery pack comprising: two side members and at least one crossmember that extends between the two side members, wherein the at least one cross member comprises an attachment surface extending between the two side members; and a cover having an inner portion and an outer portion along an outer edge, wherein: the inner portion is configured to be secured to the attachment surface; and the outer portion extends downward from the inner portion towards an upper surface of the two side members. 17. The battery pack of claim 16 , further comprising a seal arranged between and contacting the outer portion of the cover and the upper surface of the two side members. 18. The battery pack of claim 17 , wherein the outer portion of the cover comprises a plurality of holes extending therethrough and the seal is arranged inward of the plurality of holes. 19. The battery pack of claim 18 , further comprising a plurality of fasteners extending through the plurality of holes for coupling the outer portion of the cover to the upper surface of the two side members. 20. The battery pack of claim 16 , wherein the two side members at least partially define an interior space, the battery pack further comprising: a battery within the interior space, wherein the battery extends above an interface between the upper surface of the two side members and the outer portion of the cover.
