Methods and apparatuses for generating and displaying a model of a subject's teeth. Described herein are intraoral scanning methods and apparatuses for generating a three-dimensional model of a subject's intraoral region (e.g., teeth). These methods and apparatuses may be used for identifying and evaluating lesions, caries and cracks in the teeth.

What is claimed is: 1. An intraoral scanning system comprising: a hand-held intraoral scanner having at least one camera image sensor and one or more light sources, wherein the one or more light sources are configured to emit light at a first spectral range and a second spectral range, wherein the second spectral range is within near-infrared (near-IR) range of wavelengths; and one or more processors operably connected to the hand-held intraoral scanner, the one or more processors configured to: capture and store surface scan data from the at least one camera image sensor while the hand-held intraoral scanner is emitting light in the first spectral range corresponding to visible light or light causing fluorescence; capture and store penetrative scan data from the at least one camera image sensor while the hand-held intraoral scanner is emitting light in the second spectral range comprising near-IR; generate one or more images based on the surface scan data and the penetrative scan data; display a three-dimensional surface model based on the surface scan data; and display the generated one or more images. 2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the generated one or more images are hybrid images that mix the surface scan data with the penetrative scan data. 3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more images are generated by combining one or more images from the surface scan data with one or more images from the penetrative scan data. 4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more images are generated by identifying images from both the surface scan data and the penetrative scan data that are taken at the same or approximately the same camera angle and combining the identified images. 5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more images are generated by combining images identified from both the surface scan data and the penetrative scan data at different percentages. 6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more processors is configured to highlight one or more regions on the three-dimensional surface model to bring attention to one or more features. 7. The system of claim 6 , wherein the one or more features comprises one or more of: carries, cracks, restorations, and a dentin-enamel junction. 8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the first spectral range comprises visible light and wherein the one or more light sources is also configured to emit fluorescence-inducing light, further wherein the one or more processors is configured to capture and store fluorescence scan data while the hand-held intraoral scanner is emitting fluorescence-inducing light and wherein the generated one or more images is based on the surface scan data, the penetrative scan data and the fluorescence scan data. 9. The system of claim 1 , wherein the first spectral range comprises visible light and wherein the one or more light sources is also configured to emit UV light to capture fluorescence in response to the UV. 10. The system of claim 1 , wherein the hand-held intraoral scanner further comprises a wavelength-selective quarter waveplate and one or more beam splitters and/or polarizing filters so that internal reflections from a tooth are blocked using polarization when capturing surface scan data and surface reflections from the tooth are blocked using polarization when capturing the penetrative scan data. 11. The system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more processors is configured to display the three-dimensional surface model and/or the generated one or more images in real time. 12. An intraoral scanning system comprising: a hand-held intraoral scanner having: at least one camera image sensor, one or more light sources, wherein the one or more light sources are configured to emit light at a first spectral range and a second spectral range, wherein the second spectral range is within near-infrared (near-IR) range of wavelengths, a wavelength-selective quarter waveplate, and one or more beam splitters and/or polarizing filters, wherein the hand-held intraoral scanner is configured so that surface reflections from a tooth are blocked using polarization when capturing penetrative scan data; and one or more processors operably connected to the hand-held intraoral scanner, the one or more processors configured to: capture and store surface scan data from the at least one camera image sensor while the hand-held intraoral scanner is emitting light in the first spectral range corresponding to visible light; capture and store penetrative scan data from the at least one camera image sensor while the hand-held intraoral scanner is emitting light in the second spectral range comprising near-IR; display, in real time, a three-dimensional surface model based on the surface scan data; and display one or more images based on the penetrative scan data. 13. The system of claim 12 , wherein the hand-held intraoral scanner is further configured so that internal reflections from a tooth are blocked using polarization when capturing surface scan data. 14.
