Official abstract text for this publication.
A surgical instrument includes an elongated body operably connected to a jaw member and a blade. The elongated body includes an inner tube and an outer tube configured to move laterally with respect to one another. A drive arm has a first end engaged to the outer tube and a second end pivotably coupled to the jaw member configured to move laterally in tandem with the outer tube such that motion of the outer tube in a first direction pulls the jaw member away from the blade, and motion of the outer tube in a second direction pushes the jaw member towards the blade. The drive arm includes a semi-rigid material configured to flex when compressed, such that flexion of the drive arm can offload excess force exerted by the outer tube on the jaw member.

What is claimed is: 1. A surgical instrument comprising: an elongated body portion defining a plane bisecting the elongated body portion along a longitudinal axis of the elongated body portion, the elongated body portion including an inner tube and an outer tube, wherein the outer tube is configured to move longitudinally about the inner tube; a jaw drive arm having a proximal end portion secured in fixed position to the outer tube and a distal end portion supporting a first pivot, wherein the first pivot is entirely disposed on a first side of the plane; and a jaw member including a proximal flange portion and a distal body portion, the proximal flange portion pivotably coupled to the inner tube about a second pivot and engaged to the first pivot such that pivoting of the proximal flange portion about the second pivot rotates the first pivot about the second pivot, the distal body portion extending distally from the proximal flange portion, wherein the distal body portion is disposed entirely on the first side of the plane. 2. The surgical instrument according to claim 1 , wherein the distal end portion of the jaw drive arm rotatably supports the first pivot within a pivot lumen defined through the distal end portion of the jaw drive arm. 3. The surgical instrument according to claim 2 , wherein the first pivot includes a pivot pin rotatably disposed within the pivot lumen and including ends that protrude outwardly from both sides of the pivot lumen, wherein the ends of the pivot pin are fixedly engaged with the jaw member. 4. The surgical instrument according to claim 3 , wherein longitudinal translation of the outer tube about the inner tube in a first direction pulls the jaw drive arm and the pivot pin to thereby pivot the jaw member in one direction and such that longitudinal translation of the outer tube about the inner tube in a second direction pushes the jaw drive arm and the pivot pin to thereby pivot the jaw member in a different direction. 5. The surgical instrument according to claim 1 , wherein at least one protruding element is disposed on the proximal end portion of the drive arm and configured to be inserted into at least one fastening aperture defined within the outer tube. 6. The surgical instrument according to claim 5 , wherein the at least one fastening aperture is configured to releasably receive the at least one protruding element such that the jaw drive arm is removably engaged to the outer tube. 7. The surgical instrument according to claim 5 , wherein the at least one protruding element is welded within the at least one fastening aperture such that the drive arm is permanently engaged to the outer tube. 8. The surgical instrument according to claim 1 , wherein the proximal flange portion of the jaw member defines a pair of spaced-apart flanges. 9. The surgical instrument according to claim 8 , wherein each flange of the pair of spaced-apart flanges defines a groove configured to receive a portion of the first pivot. 10. The surgical instrument according to claim 9 , wherein the first pivot is a pivot pin and wherein the portions of the first pivot are first and second ends of the pivot pin. 11. The surgical instrument according to claim 10 , wherein the first and second ends of the pivot pin are welded into the grooves such that the pivot pin is permanently affixed to the proximal flange portion of the jaw member. 12. The surgical instrument according to claim 10 , wherein the pivot pin is freely rotatable within a pivot lumen defined through the distal end portion of the jaw drive arm. 13. The surgical instrument according to claim 9 , wherein a spacing between the pair of spaced-apart flanges of the proximal flange portion is greater than a width of the distal end portion of the jaw drive arm, and less than a length of the first pivot. 14. The surgical instrument according to claim 1 , wherein the proximal end portion of the jaw drive arm is wider than the distal end portion of the jaw drive arm. 15. The surgical instrument according to claim 14 , wherein the jaw drive arm tapers inward along at least a portion of the length thereof from the proximal end portion towards the distal end portion. 16. The surgical instrument according to claim 1 , further comprising an opposing structure extending from the elongated body portion, wherein the jaw member opposes the opposing structure in at least one position of the jaw member to clamp tissue therebetween. 17. The surgical instrument according to claim 16 , wherein the opposing structure is an ultrasonic blade. 18. A surgical instrument comprising: an elongated body portion including an inner tube and an outer tube, wherein the outer tube is configured to move longitudinally about the inner tube; a jaw drive arm having a proximal end portion secured to the outer tube and a distal end portion supporting a pivot; and a jaw member pivotably coupled to the inner tube and engaged to the pivot, wherein the jaw drive arm comprises a semi-rigid material configured to flex when compressed beyond a predefined threshold force. 19. The surgical instrument according to claim 18 , wherein the flexion of the drive arm is configured to offload a pushing force exerted by the outer tube on the jaw member when the pushing force of the outer tube is greater than the predefined threshold force. 20. A surgical instrument comprising: an elongated body portion including an inner tube and an outer tube, wherein the outer tube is configured to move longitudinally about the inner tube; a jaw drive arm having a proximal end portion secured to the outer tube and a distal end portion supporting a pivot; and a jaw member pivotably coupled to the inner tube and engaged to the pivot, wherein the jaw drive arm tapers in thickness along at least a portion of a length thereof from the proximal end portion towards the distal end portion.
