Official abstract text for this publication.
A bed system includes microclimate control capabilities for providing quality sleep experience. The bed system can include a microclimate control subsystem configured to supply conditioned air (e.g., heated or cooled air) to a mattress, or draw ambient air from the mattress, to achieve a desired temperature at the top of the mattress. Utilizing supply of conditioned air to provide air at desired temperature to the mattress system, or utilizing air suction to drain heat away from the mattress system, can provide precise microclimate control at the mattress, thereby permitting conformable sleep.

What is claimed is: 1. A method of operating a mattress air controller, the method comprising: determining that a user is in bed; operating the mattress air controller to heat or cool the user while the user is determined to be in bed; determining that the user is not in bed; operating the mattress air controller in a refresh mode to refresh air in the mattress while the user is determined to be not in bed; detecting a characteristic of the air during the refresh mode; determining that the characteristic of the air meets a threshold value; and based on determining that the characteristic of the air meets the threshold value, controlling the air controller to deactivate the refresh mode. 2. The method of claim 1 , wherein operating the mattress air controller in the refresh mode comprises: drawing air from a top of the mattress for a predetermined period of time. 3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the refresh mode is automatically operated regularly at intervals configured to reduce microbial growth. 4. The method of claim 1 , wherein, in the refresh mode, the mattress air controller is operated in a direction reverse to a direction of operating the mattress air controller to heat or cool the user. 5. The method of claim 1 , wherein operating the mattress air controller in a refresh mode comprises: stopping operation of a heating element in the refresh mode. 6. The method of claim 1 , wherein to refresh air in the mattress comprises circulating ambient air at a top surface of the mattress. 7. A bed system comprising: a mattress; and a mattress air controller comprising: a fan; one or more processors; and a computer-readable storage medium coupled to the one or more processors and having instructions stored thereon which, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to perform operations comprising: operating the mattress air controller in a conditioning mode whereby the fan is operated to move air at a top of the mattress to heat or cool a user; and operating the mattress air controller in a refresh mode whereby the fan is operated to move air at the top of the mattress to refresh the mattress, wherein in the refresh mode, the fan is operated in alternating directions for a predetermined period of time. 8. The bed system of claim 7 , the operations further comprising: determining that the user is in bed, wherein the mattress air controller is operated in the conditioning mode while the user is determined to be in bed; and determining that the user is not in bed, wherein the mattress air controller is operated in the refresh mode while the user is determined to be not in bed. 9. The bed system of claim 8 , wherein the mattress air controller further comprises a heater, wherein the heater is operated in the conditioning mode and wherein the heater is not operated in the refresh mode. 10. The bed system of claim 8 , wherein the operations further comprises: detecting a humidity level in the air in the refresh mode; and operating the mattress air controller in the refresh mode until the humidity level reaches a predetermined value. 11. The bed system of claim 7 , wherein to refresh the mattress comprises circulating ambient air at the top surface of the mattress. 12. The bed system of claim 7 , wherein the predetermined period of time ranges from 30 minutes to 60 minutes. 13. The bed system of claim 7 , wherein the conditioning mode is a cooling mode, the operations further comprising: determining that the user is in bed; operating the air controller in the cooling mode while the user is determined to be in bed. 14. The bed system of claim 7 , wherein, in the refresh mode, the air controller is operated to automatically condition the air at a first temperature or humidity according to a predetermined refresh mode setting, the first temperature or humidity being different from a second temperature or humidity provided in the conditioning mode according to a conditioning mode setting specified by the user. 15. The bed system of claim 7 , wherein, based on an expected sleep time, controlling the air controller to switch from the conditioning mode to the refresh mode by operating the air controller at a predetermined refresh mode setting that is different from a setting of the conditioning mode, wherein, in the refresh mode, the air controller is controlled to stop heating the air and the fan is operated to continue to move the air. 16. The bed system of claim 7 , wherein the operations include: flowing air through a HEPA filter during the refresh mode. 17. The bed system of claim 7 , wherein the operations include: applying aromatherapy to circulated air during the refresh mode. 18. The bed system of claim 7 , wherein the operations include: applying essential oils to air circulated into the mattress during the refresh mode. 19. The bed system of claim 7 , wherein the mattress comprises means to circulate the air through the mattress under the user at rest. 20. The bed system of claim 7 , wherein the instructions further comprise: operating the mattress air controller in a cleaning mode; and operating the mattress air controller in a preparation mode. 21. A method of operating a mattress air controller, the method comprising: determining that a user is in bed; operating the mattress air controller to heat or cool the user while the user is determined to be in bed; determining that the user is not in bed; and operating the mattress air controller in a refresh mode to refresh air in the mattress while the user is determined to be not in bed; wherein to refresh air in the mattress comprises circulating ambient air at a top surface of the mattress.
