Some embodiments of a medical device anchor system include an anchor device, a tether, and an adapter for securing a medical instrument (such as a catheter or the like) in place relative to a skin penetration point using subcutaneous anchors.
Opening claim text (preview).
What is claimed is: 1. A method of using a medical anchor system, the method comprising: deploying subcutaneous anchors of a medical anchor system through a skin penetration point that is occupied by a medical instrument, the subcutaneous anchors being deployed in a subcutaneous region along an underside of a skin layer proximate to the skin penetration point, the subcutaneous anchors extending distally from a distal end of a retainer body of the medical anchor system; securing a second body of the medical anchor system to a tether member at a position spaced proximally away from a proximal end of the retainer body, the tether member attached to the retainer body and extending in a longitudinal direction away from the proximal end of the retainer body such that the tether member is positioned between a distal end of the second body and the proximal end of the retainer body, the tether member including a plurality of mating locations spaced apart at different longitudinal positions relative to the proximal end of the retainer body and wherein the second body is secured to the tether member at one of the plurality of mating locations; and securing the medical instrument to the retainer body and the second body. 2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the medical instrument is releasably secured to the retainer body and the second body. 3. The method of claim 2 , wherein securing the medical instrument further comprises securing the medical instrument to the second body and, after securing the medical instrument to the second body, releasably securing the medical instrument to the retainer body. 4. The method of claim 2 , wherein securing the medical instrument to the retainer body further comprises securing a first external portion of the medical instrument to the retainer body of the medical anchor system by adjusting a latch assembly of the retainer body to a closed position to mate with the first external portion of the medical instrument. 5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the latch assembly of the retainer body comprises a hinged portion and a mating engagement feature, and adjusting the latch assembly of the retainer body to a closed position to mate with the first external portion of the medical instrument further comprises positioning the medical instrument with respect to the mating engagement feature and adjusting the hinged portion to engage with the mating engagement feature so that the first external portion of the medical instrument is between the hinged portion and a portion of the retainer body. 6. The method of claim 4 , wherein securing the medical instrument to the second body further comprises securing a second external portion of the medical instrument by mating one or more engagement portions of the second body with one or more corresponding elements of the medical instrument. 7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the one or more engagement portions each comprise a retention post that extends from the second body. 8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising: adjusting the retainer body to an unfolded configuration after deploying the subcutaneous anchors. 9. The method of claim 1 , further comprising: trimming the tether member to remove an excess length of the tether member that extends proximally away from the second body of the medical anchor system. 10. A method of using a medical anchor system, the method comprising: deploying subcutaneous anchors of a medical anchor system through a skin penetration point that is occupied by a medical instrument, the subcutaneous anchors being deployed in a subcutaneous region along an underside of a skin layer proximate to the skin penetration point, the subcutaneous anchors extending distally from a distal end of a retainer body of the medical anchor system so that a tether member attached to the retainer body extends in a longitudinal direction away from a proximal end of the retainer body, the tether member having a plurality of mating locations spaced apart at different longitudinal positions relative to the proximal end of the retainer body; selecting a mating location from the plurality of mating locations based on a distance between the retainer body and a second body of the medical anchor system; and securing the second body to the tether member at the selected mating location such that the tether member is positioned between a distal end of the second body and the proximal end of the retainer body. 11. The method of claim 10 , further comprising: adjusting the retainer body to a folded configuration prior to deploying the subcutaneous anchors, wherein the subcutaneous anchors are aligned in the folded configuration. 12. The method of claim 11 , further comprising: adjusting the retainer body to an unfolded configuration after deploying the subcutaneous anchors. 13. The method of claim 11 , wherein the retainer body comprises first and second retainer body portions, the first retainer body portion coupled to the second retainer body portion at a flexible web portion. 14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the flexible web portion comprises a longitudinal fold axis, and the first retainer body portion and second retainer body portion are pivotable about the longitudinal fold axis. 15. The method of claim 10 , further comprising: trimming the tether member to remove an excess length of the tether member that extends proximally away from the second body of the medical anchor system. 16. The method of claim 10 , further comprising: trimming the tether member to remove an excess length of the tether member that extends proximally of the selected mating location. 17. The method of claim 10 , further comprising: securing an external portion of the medical instrument to the retainer body by pivoting a latch portion of the retainer body to closed configuration about the medical instrument. 18. The method of claim 10 , wherein the tether member is integrally formed with the retainer body.
