Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A treadmill includes a deck having a continuous track, and a plurality of slats fixedly connected to the track. The treadmill also includes a first post extending from the deck, a second post extending from the deck opposite the first post, and a first arm supported by the first post and including a first rotary control. The treadmill further includes a second arm opposite the first arm and supported by the second post. The second arm includes a second rotary control separate from the first rotary control. The first rotary control is configured to control a first function of the treadmill and the second rotary control is configured to control a second function of the treadmill different from the first function.

First claim

Opening claim text (preview).

What is claimed is: 1. A treadmill, comprising: a controller; a first motor operably connected to the controller; a second motor, separate from the first motor, operably connected to the controller; a deck supporting a belt; a first rotary control operably connected to the controller and configured to control a first function of the treadmill driven by the first motor, wherein the first function is a movement of the belt of the treadmill and the first rotary control is disposed at a location separate from other controls of the treadmill, wherein the first rotary control has a substantially cylindrical outer portion with openings on two sides of the outer portion, the openings facing each other along a central axis and grips disposed on top of the outer portion, and wherein the outer portion is connected to an annular carrier having a frame with annular outer and inner surfaces, with detents disposed on the inner surface and a printed circuit board (PCB) disposed on the outer surface, each detent in the detents correlating to an incremental change in the first function, and wherein the outer portion interfaces with at least one detent in the detents of the inner surface of the frame of the carrier as the outer portion rotates relative to the carrier to control a change in the first function and the PCB comprises one or more sensors that determine position of the outer portion relative to the carrier; and a second rotary control, separate from the first rotary control and from the other controls of the treadmill, operably connected to the controller and configured to control a second function of the treadmill driven by the second motor. 2. The treadmill of claim 1 , wherein the second function is an incline of the deck of the treadmill. 3. The treadmill of claim 1 , wherein: a speed at which the first rotary control is configured to rotate is associated with a speed at which the first function is driven by the first motor; and a speed at which the second rotary control is configured to rotate is associated with a speed at which the second function is driven by the second motor. 4. The treadmill of claim 1 , wherein the second function is an incline of the deck of the treadmill, and wherein a speed at which the second rotary control is configured to rotate corresponds to a speed at which the incline of the deck changes in response to rotation of the second rotary control. 5. The treadmill of claim 1 , wherein the first rotary control and the second rotary control are both a wheel-type controls. 6. The treadmill of claim 1 , wherein the first and second rotary controls are disposed on an upper assembly of the treadmill. 7. The treadmill of claim 1 , wherein the other controls of the treadmill are located outside of an arm of the treadmill. 8. The treadmill of claim 1 , wherein the other controls of the treadmill are located on a control of the treadmill. 9. A treadmill, comprising: a deck supporting a belt; a controller; a motor operably connected to the controller and configured to drive a movement of the belt; and a rotary control connected to the controller and configured to receive input associated with controlling a speed of the movement of the belt, wherein controlling the speed includes increasing the speed of movement of the belt in response to a forward rotation of the rotary control and decreasing the speed of movement of the belt in response to a rearward rotation of the rotary control, wherein the rotary control has a substantially cylindrical outer portion with an opening through an inside of the outer portion and along a central axis and grips disposed on top of the outer portion, and an annular carrier having a frame with outer and inner surfaces, with detents disposed on the inner surface and a printed circuit board (PCB) disposed on the outer surface, and wherein the outer portion interfaces with a subset of detents on the inner surface of the frame of the carrier as the outer portion rotates relative to the carrier and the PCB comprises one or more sensors that determine position of the outer portion relative to the carrier, and the position corresponds to a change in the speed of the belt. 10. The treadmill of claim 9 , wherein the rotary control is a wheel-type rotary control. 11. The treadmill of claim 9 , further comprising: an additional rotary control connected to the controller and configured to control a level of incline of the deck. 12. The treadmill of claim 9 , further comprising: a display supported by an upper assembly of the treadmill; and an additional rotary control connected to the controller and configured to control a user interface presented by the display. 13. The treadmill of claim 9 , further comprising: a display supported by an upper assembly of the treadmill; and an additional rotary control connected to the controller and configured to control presentation of content to a user of the treadmill via the display. 14. The treadmill of claim 9 , wherein the rotary control is disposed on an upper assembly of the treadmill. 15. The treadmill of claim 9 , wherein the rotary control is disposed on an arm of the treadmill. 16. A method of operating a treadmill, the method comprising: determining a rotary control of the treadmill has rotated in a certain direction; and modifying operation of the treadmill based on the certain direction of rotation of the rotary control, wherein the certain direction is in a longitudinal direction of a deck of the treadmill, wherein the rotary control has a substantially cylindrical outer portion with openings on two sides of the outer portion, the openings facing each other along a central axis and grips disposed on top of the outer portion, and an annular carrier having a frame with an annular outer surface and inner surface with at least one detent disposed on the inner surface and a printed circuit board (PCB) disposed on the outer surface, and determining an amount by which to modify the operation based on an interface between the outer portion and the at least one detent of the inner surface of the frame of the carrier as the outer portion rotates relative to the carrier, wherein determining the amount further comprises: sensing, using one or more sensors in the PCB a position of the outer portion relative to the carrier; and determining the amount based on the position. 17. The method of claim 16 , wherein modifying operation of the treadmill includes changing a speed of movement of a belt of the treadmill based on the certain direction of rotation of the rotary control. 18. The method of claim 16 , wherein modifying operation of the treadmill includes changing an incline of the deck of the treadmill based on the certain direction of rotation of the rotary control. 19. The method of claim 16 , wherein modifying operation of the treadmill includes increasing a speed of movement of a belt of the treadmill based on the certain direction of rotation of the rotary control being a forward direction. 20. The method of claim 16 , wherein modifying operation of the treadmill includes decreasing a speed of movement of a belt of the treadmill based on the certain direction of rotation of the rotary control being a rearward direction.
