Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Articles of footwear may include a knitted component defining at least part of a void and joined with a sole structure. The knitted component may include an interior knit layer, an exterior knit layer, and a plurality of inlaid courses of a high tenacity yarn between the interior and exterior knit layers. The plurality of inlaid courses of high tenacity yarn may include at least three courses of the high tenacity yarn, each of which may be separated from an adjacent course of the plurality by no more than five courses.

We claim: 1. An article of footwear, comprising: a knitted component defining at least part of a void and comprising: an exterior knit layer comprising a first yarn; an interior knit layer comprising a second yarn, wherein the second yarn is more elastic than the first yarn; a plurality of inlaid courses of a high tenacity yarn located between the interior and exterior knit layers in at least a forefoot region, the plurality of inlaid courses extending from a medial side, across a toe box, and to a lateral side of the article of footwear, the plurality of inlaid courses comprising at least three courses of the high tenacity yarn, wherein each inlaid course is separated from an adjacent inlaid course of the plurality of inlaid courses by no more than ten courses of the knitted component, wherein the high tenacity yarn has a tenacity of at least six grams-force per denier, and wherein the first yarn and the high tenacity yarn differ in at least one visual property; a plurality of openings formed in the exterior knit layer, through which exposed portions of the plurality of inlaid courses of the high tenacity yarn are visible from a viewpoint facing the exterior knit layer, wherein each opening of the plurality of openings has a course-wise length and a wale-wise length, wherein the course-wise length is at least twice the wale-wise length; and a sole structure joined with the knitted component; wherein the plurality of openings together extend in a diagonal direction relative to the sole structure on at least one of the lateral side and the medial side of the article of footwear, in which at least a portion of the plurality of openings in the diagonal direction expose different inlaid courses of the plurality of inlaid courses of the high tenacity yarn. 2. The article of footwear of claim 1 , wherein each inlaid course of the plurality of inlaid courses is separated from an adjacent inlaid course of the plurality of inlaid courses by no more than five courses of the knitted component. 3. The article of footwear of claim 1 , wherein each inlaid course of the plurality of inlaid courses of the high tenacity yarn has a diameter of less than or equal to 0.9 mm. 4. The article of footwear of claim 1 , wherein the high tenacity yarn has a tenacity of at least ten grams-force per denier. 5. The article of footwear of claim 1 , wherein the at least one visual property is reflectivity. 6. The article of footwear of claim 3 , further comprising a plurality of raised knit structures extending parallel to each other in the forefoot region and diagonally relative to the sole structure, wherein the plurality of raised knit structures are raised relative to the exterior knit layer. 7. The article of footwear of claim 6 , wherein the plurality of inlaid courses are at least partially located adjacent to a throat region of the article of footwear. 8. The article of footwear of claim 7 , wherein the plurality of inlaid courses are at least partially located on the lateral side and the medial side of the article of footwear. 9. The article of footwear of claim 8 , wherein the plurality of inlaid courses extend from a lateral edge to a medial edge. 10. The article of footwear of claim 8 , wherein the plurality of inlaid courses are at least partially located in a rear foot region. 11. The article of footwear of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of inlaid courses are located in the forefoot region such that the plurality of inlaid courses of the high tenacity yarn are spatially distinct from the medial side and the lateral side of a midfoot region of the article of footwear. 12. The article of footwear of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of inlaid courses extend substantially throughout the knitted component from the forefoot region to a rearfoot region. 13. An article of footwear, comprising: a knitted component defining at least part of a void, the knitted component comprising: an exterior knit layer comprising a first yarn; an interior knit layer; a first plurality of courses of a high tenacity yarn inlaid between the interior knit layer and the exterior knit layer, the first plurality of courses extending in a course-wise direction and located at least on a medial side and/or a lateral side of the knitted component, wherein each course is separated from an adjacent course of the first plurality of courses by no more than five courses of the knitted component, wherein the high tenacity yarn has a tenacity of at least ten grams-force per denier, wherein the first plurality of courses comprises at least three courses; a second plurality of courses of the high tenacity yarn inlaid between the interior knit layer and the exterior knit layer, the second plurality of courses extending in the course-wise direction and located in a toe box of the knitted component, the second plurality of courses spatially distinct from the first plurality of courses, wherein each course is separated from an adjacent course of the second plurality of courses by no more than five courses of the knitted component, wherein the first yarn has a first color and the high tenacity yarn has a second color, and wherein the first color is different from the second color; a first plurality of openings formed in the exterior knit layer, through which exposed portions of the first plurality of courses of the high tenacity yarn are visible from a viewpoint facing the exterior knit layer; a second plurality of openings formed in the exterior knit layer, through which exposed portions of the second plurality of courses of the high tenacity yarn are visible from the viewpoint facing the exterior knit layer; and a sole structure joined with the knitted component; wherein the second plurality of openings extend in a first straight diagonal line relative to the sole structure in a forefoot region, wherein the second plurality of openings extend in a second straight diagonal line relative to the sole structure in the forefoot region, wherein the second straight diagonal line is an antidiagonal line relative to the first straight diagonal line, wherein a first end of the first straight diagonal line converges with a first end of the second straight diagonal line at an obtuse angle of convergence to form a convergence point, wherein the convergence point is located in a center portion of the knitted component. 14. The article of footwear of claim 13 , wherein the high tenacity yarn of the second plurality of courses protrudes through each of the second plurality of openings. 15. The article of footwear of claim 14 , wherein each course of the first plurality of courses comprises at least three distinct ends of the high tenacity yarn. 16. The article of footwear of claim 13 , wherein the first plurality of courses of the high tenacity yarn is at least partially located in a rearfoot region of the article of footwear. 17. The article of footwear of claim 13 , wherein the first plurality of courses of the high tenacity yarn is at least partially located in a heel region of the article of footwear. 18. The article of footwear of claim 15 , wherein the first yarn has a first reflectivity, the high tenacity yarn has a second reflectivity, and wherein the first reflectivity is different from the second reflectivity. 19. The article of footwear of claim 13 , wherein each course of the first plurality of courses comprises at least four distinct ends of the high tenacity yarn, wherein the at least four distinct ends of the high tenacity yarn extend parallel to each other. 20.
