Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Apparatus and methods to manage recording of streaming packetized content (such as for example live IP packetized content) for access, retrieval and delivering thereof to one or more users. In one embodiment, the foregoing is accomplished via communication between a recording manager and a receiver/decoder device. The recording manager manages and schedules recording of content on behalf of the receiver/decoder device (and/or mobile devices) disposed at a user's premises. The recording manager runs one or more computer programs designed to receive requests to record packetized content from one or more consumer devices, and use metadata contained within the requests to cause a cloud storage entity or premises storage device to record the content at its scheduled date/time (either via the receiver/decoder device itself, or another network entity). In this manner, the recording manager provides digital video recording (DVR) functionality to devices that would be otherwise incapable of scheduling a recording and/or recording such content.

What is claimed is: 1. Computer readable apparatus comprising a non-transitory storage medium, the non-transitory storage medium comprising at least one computer program, the at least one computer program comprising a plurality of instructions which are configured to, when executed by a processing apparatus, cause a recording management apparatus to: during a first period of time: receive, from a first computerized client device associated with a content distribution network, data representative of a first request to store digital content; generate first identifier data associated with a reserved storage location of a cloud-based storage apparatus; and provide the first identifier data to the first computerized client device, thereby indicating to the first computerized client device where the digital content will be stored; and during a second period of time subsequent to the first period of time: cause storage of the digital content at a storage location of the cloud-based storage apparatus; based on the storage location being different from the reserved storage location, update a database to change a location of the digital content from the reserved storage location to the storage location; receive, from a second computerized client device, data representative of a request to access the digital content, the data representative of the request to access the digital content comprising metadata; utilize at least a portion of the metadata to identify the storage location; generate second identifier data associated with the storage location; and provide the second identifier data to both the first computerized client device and the second computerized client device, wherein the second identifier data enables the first computerized client device and the second computerized client device to access the digital content at the storage location. 2. The computer readable apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the cloud-based storage apparatus is disposed an edge node of the content distribution network, wherein disposition of the cloud-based storage apparatus at the edge node is configured to distribute at least a portion of a load associated with delivery of the digital content away from a core portion of the content distribution network. 3. The computer readable apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the causing the storage of the digital content at the storage location comprises causing storing of the digital content on a network storage space that is specifically allocated to at least one of a user or user account associated with both of the first and second computerized client devices. 4. The computer readable apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the second identifier data enables the second computerized client device to access the digital content at the storage location subject to one or more restrictions, the one or more restrictions comprising at least a condition that, based at least on data indicating that the second computerized client device has completed use of the digital content, the digital content is removed from the storage location. 5. The computer readable apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of instructions are further configured to, when executed by the processing apparatus, cause the recording management apparatus to: based on the receipt of the data representative of the request to access the digital content: execute a first process, the first process indicating that a user of the second computerized client device is a subscriber of the content distribution network; execute a second process, the second process indicative of an association between the second computerized client device and a premises serviced via the content distribution network; and execute a third process to determine whether the user of the second computerized client device is entitled to view the digital content; wherein: the second identifier data enables the second computerized client device to access the digital content at the storage location subject to one or more restrictions, the one or more restrictions comprising access to the digital content at the storage location by the second computerized client device being limited to a prescribed period of time; the access is based at least on data generated from the execution of the first and second processes; and the one or more restrictions are based at least on data generated from the execution of the third process. 6. The computer readable apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the storage location is managed by an operator of the content distribution network, but controlled by a least a user of the first and second computerized client devices via a distributed application disposed at least in part on both the first and second computerized client devices and a computerized network apparatus disposed at a network-side node of the content distribution network. 7. The computer readable apparatus of claim 1 , wherein: the plurality of instructions are further configured to, when executed by the processing apparatus, cause the recording management apparatus to: receive a plurality of data relating to respective ones of a plurality of other requests to store the digital content, the plurality of other requests originated from a number of respective third computerized client devices; the causation of the storage of the digital content at the storage location of the cloud-based storage apparatus comprises automatic causation of the storage of the digital content at the storage location based at least in part on the number meeting or exceeding a prescribed threshold value; and access to the digital content by the respective third computerized client devices is enabled via provision of the second identifier data associated with the storage location to the respective third computerized client devices. 8. The computer readable apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of instructions are further configured to, when executed by the processing apparatus, cause the recording management apparatus to: receive, from one or more respective third computerized client devices, data representative of one or more respective second requests to store the digital content; and based at least on a determination that the receipt of the data representative of the one or more respective second requests occurred within a prescribed time period of the receipt of the data representative of the first request, dismiss the one or more respective second requests to store the digital content so as to at least result in a reduction of network latency associated with at least a portion of the content distribution network. 9. The computer readable apparatus of claim 1 , wherein: the receipt, from the first computerized client device associated with the content distribution network, of the data representative of the first request to store the digital content comprises receipt of data representative of a request to store the digital content at a then-future time; and the causation of the storage of the digital content at the storage location of the cloud-based storage apparatus comprises execution of at least one timer, the at least one timer configured to activate the first computerized client device at a predetermined time to effect the causation of the storage of the digital content at the storage location at the then-future time. 10. The computer readable apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the second identifier data is specific to the digital content, such that the identifier data enables the second computerized client device to access only the digital content at the storage location. 11. The computer readable apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of instructions are further configured
