Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A body support structure includes a structural lattice structure having a first stiffness, and a compressive lattice structure supported by the structural lattice structure and having a second stiffness less than the first stiffness. A skin lattice structure is supported by the compressive lattice structure, wherein the skin lattice structure is resistant to shear deformation in response to a normal force and is expandable in a direction transverse to the normal force.

First claim

What is claimed is: 1. A body support structure comprising: a support frame; a pair of spaced apart supports connected to the support frame and defining an opening therebetween, wherein each of the supports comprises a compressive lattice structure defining a body facing surface, wherein the compressive lattice structure is compressible in response to a normal force applied thereto; and a user interface member disposed across the opening and coupled to the pair of supports, wherein the user interface member is supported by the body facing surface of the compressive lattice structure of the supports. 2. The body support structure of claim 1 wherein the support frame comprises a structural lattice structure having a first stiffness, wherein the compressive lattice structure is coupled to the structural lattice structure, and wherein the compressive lattice structure has a second stiffness less than the first stiffness. 3. The body support structure of claim 2 further comprising a non-lattice structure positioned between portions of the structural lattice structure such that the structural lattice structure is discontinuous. 4. The body support structure of claim 3 wherein the non-lattice structure comprises a solid or tubular structure. 5. The body support structure of claim 1 wherein the support frame comprises a seat frame, and wherein the user interface member comprises a seat. 6. The body support structure of claim 1 wherein the support frame comprises a backrest frame, and wherein the user interface member comprises a backrest. 7. The body support structure of claim 1 wherein the support frame comprises a pair of beams underlying the pair of supports. 8. The body support structure of claim 7 wherein the pair of beams comprise a pair of backrest uprights. 9. The body support structure of claim 1 wherein the user interface member comprises a skin lattice structure supported by the compressive lattice structure. 10. The body support structure of claim 1 wherein at least a portion of the user interface member overlying the opening is not supported by any other structure. 11. The body support structure of claim 1 further comprising a cross member connecting the spaced apart supports and positioned proximate a front of a seat portion, wherein the cross member comprises an auxiliary compressive lattice structure supporting the user interface member. 12. The body support structure of claim 1 wherein the compressive lattice structure comprises an interior core lattice and a face lattice connected to the core lattice and defining the body facing surface of the compressive lattice structure. 13. The body support structure of claim 1 wherein the support frame comprises a base, a seat support connected to the base and a back frame connected to one of the base or seat support, wherein the pair of spaced apart supports define portions of the seat support and the back frame. 14. The body support structure of claim 13 wherein the user interface member defines a seat and a backrest connected to the seat support and the back frame. 15. The body support structure of claim 13 wherein the seat and backrest are a formed as a continuous one-piece member. 16. A method of manufacturing the body support structure of claim 1 comprising forming the compressive lattice structure by additive manufacturing. 17. The method of claim 16 wherein the additive manufacturing comprises 3-D printing.
