Official abstract text for this publication.
A dental appliance for positioning a patient's teeth includes a removable orthodontic tooth positioning appliance having teeth receiving cavities shaped to directly receive at least some of the patient's teeth and apply a resilient positioning force to the patient's teeth. The appliance includes a hard polymer layer having a hard polymer layer elastic modulus disposed between a first soft polymer layer having a first soft polymer layer elastic modulus and a second soft polymer layer having a second soft polymer layer elastic modulus. The hard polymer layer elastic modulus is greater than each of the first soft polymer layer elastic modulus and the second soft polymer layer elastic modulus. At least one of the first soft polymer layer and the second soft polymer layer has a flexural modulus of greater than about 35,000 psi.

What is claimed is: 1. A multilayer dental appliance for repositioning a patient's teeth from a first arrangement toward a second arrangement, the dental appliance comprising: a plurality of tooth-receiving cavities shaped to receive and resiliently reposition the patient's teeth from the first arrangement toward the second arrangement; an exterior layer, wherein the exterior layer defines an exterior surface of the multilayer dental appliance, wherein the exterior layer comprises at least a first layer and a second layer, wherein the first layer and the second layer comprise different polymeric materials, and wherein one of the first layer and the second layer comprises a co-polyester with a flexural modulus of greater than about 150,000 psi; a tooth-contact layer, wherein the tooth-contact layer is configured to contact the patient's teeth, wherein the tooth-contact layer comprises at least a third layer and a fourth layer, wherein the third layer and the fourth layer comprise different polymeric materials, and wherein one of the third layer and the fourth layer comprises a co-polyester with a flexural modulus of greater than about 150,000 psi; an inner layer, wherein the inner layer is disposed between the exterior layer and the tooth-contact layer, wherein the inner layer comprises a co-polyester; and wherein the multilayer dental appliance has a thickness of about 600 μm to about 1000 μm. 2. The multilayer dental appliance of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the first layer and the second layer comprises a thickness of about 25 μm to about 100 μm. 3. The multilayer dental appliance of claim 1 , wherein one of the first layer and the second layer comprises a co-polyester elastomer; and wherein one of the third layer and the fourth layer comprises a co-polyester elastomer. 4. The multilayer dental appliance of claim 1 , wherein one of the first layer and the second layer comprises a hardness between about 60 A and about 85 D. 5. The multilayer dental appliance of claim 1 , wherein the first layer and the second layer have different hardnesses. 6. The multilayer dental appliance of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the first layer and the second layer comprises a tensile strength at yield of about 4000 psi to about 6500 psi. 7. The multilayer dental appliance of claim 1 , wherein the first layer and the second layer are laminated together. 8. The multilayer dental appliance of claim 1 , wherein the exterior layer, the tooth-contact layer, and the inner layer are laminated together.
