Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A media guidance application is provided by which users can view program listings associated with programming that the user may access using other user equipment devices. The media guidance application, implemented on, for example, a remote system, may determine through communications with television equipment whether or not the television equipment is authorized to provide a particular package of television programming to be viewed by the user. For example, an online program guide application may determine whether or not television equipment allows a user to view particular channels and, based on that determination, proceed to determine what packages of programming the user subscribes to. A customized program guide may then be displayed based on what programming the user subscribes to on various systems.

What is claimed is: 1. A method of using a media guidance application, the method comprising: transmitting, from a second user device, a request for subscription data indicating a first package of content that a first user device, distinct from the second user device, is authorized to receive through a first reoccurring subscription, wherein the first package of content is from at least a first content provider; receiving, at the second user device, the subscription data indicating the first package of content that the first user device is authorized to receive; transmitting, by the second user device, an instruction to cause the first user device to attempt to access a premium service associated with the first package of content; based on (1) the subscription data and (2) receiving an indication that the first user device failed to access the premium service associated with the first package of content, providing subscription information for the premium service at the second user device, wherein: the subscription information for the premium service indicates a second reoccurring subscription to a second package of content; and the second package of content is from a second content provider that is different than the first content provider. 2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising: receiving, at the second user device, media guidance data associated with a plurality of content items; and determining that the first user device is not authorized to access the premium service based on a comparison of the received media guidance data associated with the plurality of content items to the received subscription data. 3. The method of claim 1 , wherein transmitting the request for subscription data further comprises: instructing the first user device to prompt a user to view media content from the first package of content; and instructing the first user device to receive a user indication as to whether the media content from the first package of content is viewable by the user. 4. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining that the first user device is not authorized to access the premium service is based on data transmitted by a remote server. 5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the subscription data is received from a remote server. 6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the subscription data is received from the first user device. 7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising: generating, by the first user device, the request for subscription data, wherein the request for subscription data comprises identifying information associated with the first user device. 8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising: identifying that a fault exists causing one or more packages of media content corresponding to the subscription data to be not viewable at the user first device. 9. A system, comprising: a second user device comprising circuitry configured to: transmit a request for subscription data indicating a first package of content that a first user device, distinct from the second user device, is authorized to receive through a first reoccurring subscription, wherein the first package of content is from at least a first content provider; receive the subscription data indicating the first package of content that the first user device is authorized to receive; transmit an instruction to cause the first user device to attempt to access a premium service associated with the first package of content; and based on (1) the subscription data and (2) receiving an indication that the first user device failed to access the premium service associated with the first package of content, provide subscription information for the premium service at the second user device, wherein: the subscription information for the premium service indicates a second reoccurring subscription to a second package of content; and the second package of content is from a second content provider that is different than the first content provider. 10. The system of claim 9 , wherein the second user device is further configured to: receive media guidance data associated with a plurality of content items; and determine that the first user device is not authorized to access the premium service based on a comparison of the received media guidance data associated with the plurality of content items to the received subscription data. 11. The system of claim 9 , wherein the second user device is further configured to transmit the request for subscription data by: instructing the first user device to prompt a user to view media content from the first package of content; and instructing the first user device to receive a user indication as to whether the media content from the first package of content is viewable by the user. 12. The system of claim 9 , wherein the second user device is configured to determine that the first user device is not authorized to access the premium service based on data transmitted by a remote server. 13. The system of claim 9 , wherein the second user device is configured to receive the subscription data from a remote server. 14. The system of claim 9 , wherein the second user device is configured to receive the subscription data from the first user device. 15. The system of claim 9 , wherein the second user device is further configured to: transmit an instruction to the first user device to generate, by the first user device, the request for subscription data, wherein the request for subscription data comprises identifying information associated with the first user device. 16. The system of claim 9 , wherein the second user device is further configured to: identify that a fault exists causing one or more packages of media content corresponding to the subscription data to be not viewable at the first user device. 17. A non-transitory computer-readable medium having instructions stored thereon that, when executed by control circuitry cause the control circuitry to: transmit a request for subscription data indicating a first package of content that a first user device, distinct from a second user device, is authorized to receive through a first reoccurring subscription, wherein the first package of content is from at least a first content provider; receive the subscription data indicating the first package of content that the first user device is authorized to receive; transmit an instruction to cause the first user device to attempt to access a premium service associated with the first package of content; based on (1) the subscription data and (2) receiving an indication that the first user device failed to access the premium service associated with the first package of content, provide subscription information for the premium service at the second user device, wherein: the subscription information for the premium service indicates a second reoccurring subscription to a second package of content; and the second package of content is from a second content provider that is different than the first content provider. 18. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 17 , wherein the control circuitry is further caused to: receive media guidance data associated with a plurality of content items; and determine that the first user device is not authorized to access the premium service based on a comparison of the received media guidance data associated with the plurality of content items to the received subscription data.
