A nuclear reactor assembly may include a fuel rod and an end plug extending from the fuel rod The end plug may include a first engagement surface and a second engagement surface. The second engagement surface may have a circular groove disposed in an exterior surface of the end plug, the circular groove defining a plane orthogonal to a longitudinal axis of the end plug. The assembly may also include a bottom nozzle forming a recess, in which the recess includes a first retainer extending from the recess and a second retainer extending from the recess. The first retainer may engage the first engagement surface and the second retainer may include a second retainer portion to engage the second engagement surface. The first retainer and the second retainer may axially retain the end plug to the bottom nozzle.

What is claimed is: 1. A nuclear reactor assembly, comprising: a fuel rod; an end plug extending from the fuel rod, wherein the end plug comprises: a first engagement surface; and a second engagement surface comprising a circular groove disposed in an exterior surface of the end plug, the circular groove defining a plane orthogonal to a longitudinal axis of the end plug; and a bottom nozzle comprising a recess, wherein the recess comprises: a first retainer extending from the recess, wherein the first retainer is to engage the first engagement surface; and a second retainer extending from the recess, wherein the second retainer comprises a second retainer portion to engage the second engagement surface, wherein the circular groove is configured to receive the second retainer portion, and wherein the first retainer and the second retainer are configured to axially retain the end plug to the bottom nozzle. 2. The nuclear reactor assembly of claim 1 , wherein the first engagement surface comprises an interior surface of a cavity disposed along the longitudinal axis within a distal end of the end plug, and wherein the first retainer extends into the cavity. 3. The nuclear reactor assembly of claim 2 , wherein the first retainer comprises a flanged portion supported by a stem, wherein the end plug comprises a segmented region comprising gaps, and wherein the segmented region is configured to flex as the first retainer passes into the cavity. 4. The nuclear reactor assembly of claim 2 , wherein the first retainer comprises a segmented flanged portion supported by a stem, and wherein the first retainer is configured to flex as the first retainer passes into the cavity. 5. The nuclear reactor assembly of claim 1 , wherein the second retainer comprises an arm and an end clip, wherein the end clip is configured to engage the groove. 6. The nuclear reactor assembly of claim 5 , wherein the arm is biased toward the groove.
