Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A first device is configured to establish a connection over a short-range communication link with a second device. The first device may transition to a sleep state, terminate (i) a paging operation and a page scanning operation associated with a paging protocol and (ii) an advertisement scanning operation associated with an advertisement protocol and perform an advertisement broadcast operation associated with the advertisement protocol, the advertisement broadcast operation generating an advertisement to be broadcast at a first interval, wherein the first interval is greater than a second interval for performing advertisement broadcast operations in an active state.

First claim

What is claimed is: 1. A method, comprising: at a wireless device in a first power state: receiving a scan request from a source device, wherein receiving the scan request causes the wireless device to transition to a second power state that is a higher power state than the first power state; transmitting a scan response to the source device subsequent to receiving the scan request; performing a page scanning operation to listen for pages from the source device, wherein the paging scanning operation is performed at a first scanning rate that is higher than a second scanning rate used when receiving scan requests when the wireless device is not in the first power state; receiving a page from the source device; and establishing a short range communication link with the source device based on the page. 2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising: when the wireless device is in the first power state, broadcasting an advertisement at a first advertising rate. 3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the advertisement comprises an indication the wireless device is in the first power state. 4. The method of claim 2 , further comprising: when the wireless device is in the second power state, broadcasting the advertisement at a second advertising rate, wherein the second advertising rate is a higher rate than the first advertising rate. 5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the advertisement comprises an indication the wireless device is in the second power state. 6. The method of claim 4 , wherein the second advertising rate is 181.25 ms and the first advertising rate is 362.5 ms. 7. The method of claim 2 , wherein the advertisement is a Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) advertisement. 8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising: prior to transmitting the scan response, determining the wireless device is allowed to establish the short range communication link with the source device. 9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the scan response comprises an indication the wireless device 135 is no longer in the first power state. 10. The method of claim 1 , further comprising: setting a timer based on starting the page scanning operation; determining the timer has expired, wherein, when the timer has expired, the page scanning operation is performed at a second scanning rate that is a lower rate than the first scanning rate. 11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the first scanning rate is a Bluetooth fast scan rate and the second scanning rate is a Bluetooth standard scan rate. 12. A wireless device, comprising: a radio configured to connect over a short-range communication link with a source device, wherein the wireless device operates in a first power state; and a processor communicatively coupled to the radio and configured to perform operations comprising: receiving a scan request from the source device; transmitting a scan response to the source device subsequent to receiving the scan request; transitioning the wireless device to a second power state that is a higher power state than the first power state in response to receiving the scan request; performing a page scanning operation to listen for pages from the source device, wherein the paging scanning operation is performed at a first scanning rate that is higher than a second scanning rate used when receiving scan requests when the wireless device is not in the first power state; receiving a page from the source device; and establishing the short range communication link with the source device based on the page. 13. The wireless device of claim 12 , wherein the operations further comprise: broadcasting, when the wireless device is in the first power state, a Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) advertisement at a first advertising rate. 14. The wireless device of claim 13 , wherein the operations further comprise: broadcasting, when the wireless device is in the second power state, the BLE advertisement at a second advertising rate, wherein the second advertising rate is a higher rate than the first advertising rate. 15. The wireless device of claim 12 , wherein the operations further comprise: prior to transmitting the scan response, determining the wireless device is allowed to establish the short range communication link with the source device. 16. The wireless device of claim 12 , wherein the scan response comprises an indication the wireless device is no longer in the first power state. 17. The wireless device of claim 12 , wherein the operations further comprise: setting a timer based on starting the page scanning operation; determining the timer has expired, wherein, when the timer has expired, the page scanning operation is performed at a second scanning rate that is a lower rate than the first scanning rate. 18. The wireless device of claim 17 , wherein the first scanning rate is a Bluetooth fast scan rate and the second scanning rate is a Bluetooth standard scan rate.
