Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A communications connection system includes an adapter module defining at least first and second ports and at least one media reading interface mounted at one of the ports. The first adapter module is configured to receive a fiber optic connector at each port. Some type of connectors may be formed as duplex connector arrangements. Some types of adapters may include ports without media reading interfaces. Some types of media reading interfaces include contact members having three contact sections.

The invention claimed is: 1. An optical connection arrangement comprising: a circuit board extending along a length; a plurality of optical adapters arranged in a row that extends parallel with the length of the circuit board, each of the optical adapters defining oppositely facing first and second ports, each of the optical adapters defining an aperture that extends between an interior of the optical adapter and an exterior of the optical adapter, each aperture being disposed at an intermediate point between the oppositely facing first and second ports of the respective optical adapter; and a presence sensing arrangement including a plurality of first portions disposed within the optical adapter and a plurality of second portions disposed on the circuit board, each first portion being configured to move relative to the respective optical adapter between a first position when a first of the ports of the respective optical adapter is available and a second position when the first port of the respective optical adapter is occupied, wherein the first portion is fully disposed within the optical adapter when disposed in the first position, wherein the first portion extends partially through the aperture when disposed in the second position, wherein the first portion is located closer to the second portion when disposed in the second position instead of the first position. 2. The optical connection interface of claim 1 , wherein the first portions flex to move between the first and second positions. 3. The optical connection interface of claim 2 , wherein each first portion is disposed fully within the optical adapter when the first port of the respective optical adapter is available. 4. The optical connection interface of claim 2 , wherein each second portion is disposed external of the optical adapter regardless of whether the first port of the respective optical adapter is available or occupied. 5. The optical connection interface of claim 2 , wherein the first portion completes a circuit when disposed in the second position. 6. An optical connection arrangement comprising: a circuit board extending along a length; an optical adapter coupled to the circuit board, the optical adapter defining oppositely facing first and second ports, the optical adapter defining an aperture that extends between an interior of the optical adapter and an exterior of the optical adapter, the aperture being disposed at an intermediate point between the oppositely facing first and second ports; and a presence sensing arrangement including a first portion disposed within the optical adapter and a second portion disposed on the circuit board, the first portion being configured to move relative to the optical adapter between a first position and a second position, the first portion also moving relative to the second portion when moved between the first and second positions, wherein the first portion is fully disposed within the optical adapter when disposed in the first position, wherein the first portion extends partially through the aperture when disposed in the second position, wherein the first portion is located closer to the second portion when disposed in the second position instead of the first position. 7. The optical connection arrangement of claim 6 , wherein the first portion is moved from the first position to the second position when a plug connector is received at the first port; and wherein the second portion detects a presence of the plug connector when the first portion is moved to the second position. 8. The optical connection arrangement of claim 7 , wherein the first portion contacts the second portion when disposed in the second position. 9. The optical connection arrangement of claim 6 , wherein the first portion includes a contact member and the second portion includes a contact pad. 10. The optical connection arrangement of claim 9 , wherein the contact member includes a planar body formed monolithically. 11. The optical connection arrangement of claim 9 , wherein the contact member defines at least three moveable contact locations. 12. The optical connection arrangement of claim 9 , wherein the contact member is one of a plurality of contact members of the first portion. 13. The optical connection arrangement of claim 12 , wherein the contact members are disposed in adjacent apertures defined by the optical adapter. 14. The optical connection arrangement of claim 12 , wherein the contact members are bound contact members. 15. The optical connection arrangement of claim 12 , wherein the contact members each include a collar having a diameter of sufficient size to inhibit the contact member from passing completely through the aperture. 16. The optical connection arrangement of claim 12 , wherein each contact member includes a contact pair; and wherein the contact pad is one of a plurality of contact pads, wherein a first piece of each contact pair contacts a first of the contact pads and wherein a second piece of each contact pair contacts a second of the contact pads. 17. The optical connection arrangement of claim 16 , wherein presence is detected when the second piece contacts the first piece. 18. The optical connection arrangement of claim 16 , wherein each contact pair includes at least four moveable contact sections. 19. The optical connection arrangement of claim 6 , wherein the contact member is configured to transfer power. 20. The optical connection arrangement of claim 6 , wherein the contact member is configured to transfer data.
