Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A vehicle router includes a data storage device storing data indicative of a vehicle loss risk score for geographical locations, one or more application programming interfaces configured to expose some or all of the vehicle loss risk score data to an external mapping service to facilitate route selection based on mapping data from the external mapping service, and a processor configured to receive, via a communication device, trip route data indicative of a set of geographical locations, access the data storage device and output vehicle loss risk score data corresponding to the received set of geographical location; and transmit routing options, determined based on the vehicle loss risk score data, to a display device for display and selection.

What is claimed is: 1. A vehicle router, comprising: a data storage device storing vehicle loss risk scores for each of a plurality of geographical locations, the vehicle loss risk score for each of the plurality of geographic locations being calculated based on variables associated with the geographic location, the variables including at least historical insurance loss data, current loss data, a plurality of vehicle loss risk factors, including at least an average claim severity and an average claim frequency, public data source data including at least emergency call data, a user generated risk factor based on inputs, independent of insurance claims data, from users reporting or identifying events or conditions using mobile devices; a computer processor for executing program instructions and for retrieving the calculated vehicle loss risk scores from the data storage device; one or more application programming interfaces configured to expose the calculated vehicle loss risk scores to an external mapping service to facilitate route selection based on mapping data from the external mapping service; a memory, coupled to the computer processor, storing program instructions for execution by the computer processor, the program instructions causing the computer processor to: receive, from a first mobile device executing instructions of an application program permitting a user to input insurance claim data, insurance claim data, for an auto accident, input by the user into the mobile device, the insurance claim data including a geographic location of the auto accident, and provide the insurance claim data for use in calculating a vehicle loss risk score for the geographic location of the auto accident; receive, from a second mobile device executing instructions of the application program permitting a user other than the insured not involved in a traffic accident to input data relating to the traffic accident, the traffic accident data including a photograph and a geographic location of the traffic accident, and provide the traffic accident data for use in calculating a vehicle loss risk score for the geographic location of the auto accident, the application program further configured to, responsive to receipt of the traffic accident data, prompt other users of the application program in the area of the geographic area of the traffic accident to provide data relating to the traffic accident; receive, via a communication device, trip route data indicative of a set of geographical locations; access the data storage device and output vehicle loss risk score data corresponding to the received set of geographical locations of the trip route data; and transmit routing options, determined based on the vehicle loss risk score data of the set of geographical locations of the trip route data, to a display device for display and selection. 2. The computer system of claim 1 , further comprising a geocoding engine for geocoding the historical loss data and the plurality of vehicle loss risk factors, the geocoding comprising expressing location data associated with the historical loss data and risk factors as a latitude and longitude. 3. The computer system of claim 1 , further comprising a scoring engine for calculating the vehicle loss risk score for each of the plurality of geographical locations based on said historical loss data and said plurality of vehicle loss risk factors. 4. The computer system of claim 3 , wherein said system is further configured to receive a user location from a user operating a mobile device, said scoring engine further being for calculating a vehicle loss risk score for the user location. 5. The computer system of claim 4 , wherein the computer processor is configured to transmit the vehicle loss risk score in a map overlay format for display by the mobile device. 6. The computer system of claim 5 , wherein said system is further configured to receive a route request from the mobile device, said route request specifying a destination, said program instructions further causing said computer processor to calculate, based at least on the vehicle loss risk scores, a trip risk score associated with at least one route to said destination. 7. The computer system of claim 6 , said program instructions further causing said computer processor to calculate a first trip risk score associated with a first route to said destination, and a second trip risk score, different from the first trip risk score, associated with a second route to said destination. 8. The computer system of claim 7 , said program instructions further causing said computer processor to transmit said trip risk score associated with each of said routes in a format for display by said mobile device. 9. The computer system of claim 6 , wherein the trip risk score for the at least one route is determined based on a first proportion of a total distance of the at least one route passing through geocodes having a first loss risk score, and a second proportion of the total distance of the at least one route passing through geocodes having a second loss risk score greater than the first loss risk score, wherein at least one of the geocodes corresponds to a street intersection. 10. The computer system of claim 1 , wherein said plurality of loss risk factors further include variable data from public data sources including a weather condition data source and a traffic condition data. 11. The computer system of claim 1 , wherein said geographical locations are identified by street-level geocode data. 12. The computer system of claim 11 , wherein said vehicle loss risk score is calculated for a plurality of street intersections. 13. The computer system of claim 1 , wherein the system is configured to, responsive to a user request for a loss risk score as to a selected one of a plurality of risks, provide loss risk score data as to the selected risk. 14. The computer system of claim 1 , wherein the vehicle loss risk score is further based on a holiday risk factor. 15. A computer-implemented vehicle routing method, comprising: retrieving, by a computer processor, from a data storage device, vehicle loss risk scores for each of a plurality of geographical locations, calculated based on variables including at least historical insurance loss data, a plurality of vehicle loss risk factors, including an average claim severity and an average claim frequency, public data source data including at least emergency call data, and a user generated risk factor based on inputs, independent of insurance claims data, from users reporting or identifying events or conditions using mobile devices; receiving by the computer processor, from a first mobile device executing instructions of an application program permitting a user to input insurance claim data, insurance claim data, for an auto accident, input by the user into the mobile device, the insurance claim data including a geographic location of the auto accident, and providing the insurance claim data for use in calculating a vehicle loss risk score for the geographic location of the auto accident; receiving, from a second mobile device executing instructions of the application program permitting a user, other than an insured, not involved in a traffic accident, to input data relating to the traffic accident, the traffic accident data including a photograph and a geographic location of the traffic accident, and providing the traffic accident data for use in calculating a vehicle loss risk score for the geographic location of the auto accident, the application program further configured to, responsive to receipt of the traffic accident
