Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A refractory article having a support structure including a first plurality of posts coupled by a first member; and a second plurality of posts substantially parallel with the first plurality of posts, the second plurality of posts coupled by a second member, wherein the support structure has a height, H, and wherein the first and second members are positioned between 0.3H and 0.7H. In another aspect, the support structure has a height to width ratio of at least 1.5, a stiffness factor of no greater than 100 mm, and a solid to open volume ratio of no greater than 5%. In another aspect, the support structure has a weight of no greater than 1200 kg, a stiffness factor of no greater than 100 mm, and a solid to open volume ratio of no greater than 5%.

What is claimed is: 1. A refractory article, comprising: a support structure comprising: a height, H; a first plurality of posts coupled by a single first member positioned between 0.3H and 0.7H, wherein the first member is disposed within an aperture of each of the first plurality of posts and in direct contact with a portion of one or more posts of the first plurality of posts; and a second plurality of posts substantially parallel with the first plurality of posts, the second plurality of posts coupled by a single second member positioned between 0.3H and 0.7H, wherein the second member is disposed within an aperture of each of the second plurality of posts and in direct contact with a portion of one or more posts of the second plurality of posts, wherein at least one of the first member or second member is not secured to the apertures but instead permitted to move therein, and wherein each of the first and second plurality of posts consists of a monolithic piece. 2. The refractory article of claim 1 , wherein the first member has an overhang end section beyond an outermost post of the first plurality of posts. 3. The refractory article of claim 2 , wherein the second member has an overhang end section beyond an outermost post of the second plurality of posts. 4. The refractory article of claim 1 , wherein each of the first and second members is generally hollow. 5. The refractory article of claim 1 , wherein the first member consists of a single member, and the second member consists of a single member. 6. The refractory article of claim 1 , wherein the first member is directly supported by only the first plurality of posts; and the second member is directly supported by only -the second plurality of posts. 7. The refractory article of claim 1 , wherein the first and second plurality of posts are generally hollow. 8. The refractory article of claim 1 , further comprising a plurality of support shoes, wherein a bottom end of each of the first and second plurality of posts is received by an inner cavity of a support shoe. 9. The refractory article of claim 1 , wherein the first and second members have a length, L M , wherein the first and second plurality of posts have a length, L P , and wherein L P is no less than L M . 10. The refractory article of claim 2 , wherein the overhang end section has a length L O , and the first plurality of posts have a length L P , wherein L O is greater than 0.01 L P and less than 0.20 L P . 11. The refractory article of claim 1 , wherein the first and second members comprise a material having a modulus of elasticity of no less than 300 GPa at 22° C.; a compressive strength of no less than 240 MPa at 22° C.; capability of withstanding a temperature of at least 1400° C.; or any combination thereof. 12. The refractory article of claim 1 , comprising one or more support members supported by one or more posts of the first plurality of posts and the second plurality of posts, wherein the one or more support members create one or more support levels along a direction of the height, H, of the support structure. 13. The refractory article of claim 12 , wherein each support level is adapted to support at least 150 Kg. 14. The refractory article of claim 1 , wherein the support structure has: a height to width ratio of at least 1.50 and no greater than 4.00; a solid to open volume ratio of no greater than 5.0% and no less than 1.0%; or any combination thereof. 15. A refractory article, comprising a support structure comprising: a height, H; a first plurality of posts coupled by a first member positioned between 0.3H and 0.7H, wherein the first member is disposed within an aperture of each of the first plurality of posts; a second plurality of posts substantially parallel with the first plurality of posts, the second plurality of posts coupled by a second member positioned between 0.3H and 0.7H, wherein the second member is disposed within an aperture of each of the second plurality of posts, wherein at least one of the first member or second member is not secured to the apertures but instead permitted to move therein; a plurality of third members positioned at a relative height from 0.7H to 1H, wherein each third member couples a post of the first plurality of posts and a corresponding opposite post of the second plurality of posts, wherein: the first plurality of posts are devoid of another member spanning there between at a height between the first member and the plurality of the third members; and the second plurality of posts are devoid of another member spanning there between at a height between the second member and the plurality of the third members. 16. The refractory article of claim 15 , wherein the plurality of the third members are not secured to the first or the second plurality of posts. 17. The refractory article of claim 16 , wherein each of the plurality of third members is disposed within a hole in a post of the first plurality of posts and a hole in a corresponding opposite post of the second plurality of posts. 18. The refractory article of claim 15 , wherein each of the third members extends through a hole in a post of the first plurality of posts and a corresponding hole in the opposite post of the second plurality of posts. 19. The refractory article of claim 15 , wherein the plurality of third member comprise an overhang end section.
