Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A communication system includes a first communication device that configures a first wireless network together with another peripheral device or a plurality of other peripheral devices by using a first BSSID and a second communication device that configures a second wireless network together with another peripheral device or a plurality of other peripheral devices by using a second BSSID. The first communication device is configured to transmit a first frame in which a first identification value has been designated as a BSSID. The first communication device and the second communication device are configured to perform reception processing of a frame in which the first identification value has been designated as the BSSID, as a valid frame.

First claim

What is claimed is: 1. A communication system, comprising: a first set of electronic devices configured to communicate with each other using a first basic service set identifier (BSSID), the first BSSID being a media access control (MAC) address of a first electronic device in the first set of electronic devices, the first electronic device having a common identifier associated therewith; a second set of electronic devices configured to communicate with each other using a second BSSID, the second BSSID being a MAC address of a second electronic device in the second set of electronic devices, the second electronic device also having the common identifier associated therewith; wherein the first electronic device is configured to (a1) receive and discard frames having BSSIDs that match neither the first BSSID nor the common identifier, and (b1) receive and process frames having BSSIDs that match either the first BSSID or the common identifier; and wherein the second electronic device is configured to (a2) receive and discard frames having BSSIDs that match neither the second BSSID nor the common identifier, and (b2) receive and process frames having BSSIDs that match either the second BSSID or the common identifier, wherein the common identifier differs from the first MAC address, the second MAC address, and a broadcast address. 2. The communication system of claim 1 , wherein the first and second electronic devices are configured as access points in a wireless network. 3. The communication system of claim 1 , wherein each electronic device in each of the first and second sets of electronic devices other than the first and second electronic devices is configured as a station device in a wireless network. 4. The communication system of claim 1 , wherein a third electronic device in the first set of electronic devices has the common identifier associated therewith, and wherein the third electronic device is configured to receive and discard frames having BSSIDs that match neither the first BSSID nor the common identifier, and receive and process frames having BSSIDs that match either the first BSSID or the identifier. 5. The communication system of claim 1 , wherein at least some of the electronic devices in the first and/or second sets of electronic devices are configured to execute an application program, and wherein the common identifier is provided by the application program. 6. The communication system of claim 1 , wherein another common identifier is associated with the first and second electronic devices based on an invitation from the first electronic device being accepted by the second electronic device. 7. The communication system of claim 6 , wherein the common identifier is available to each of the first and second electronic devices, wherein the invitation is sent using the common identifier. 8. The communication system of claim 1 , wherein after an invitation from the first device is accepted by the second device, the first electronic device communicates with the other electronic device(s) in the first set via a common channel, and the second electronic device communicates with the other electronic device(s) in the second set via the common channel, regardless of what channel(s) was/were used in the first set and the second set before the invitation was accepted. 9. The communication system of claim 8 , wherein after the invitation from the first device is accepted by the second device, the first and second electronic devices communicate with one another via the common channel. 10. A first electronic device for use with a wireless communication network including a plurality of electronic devices, the plurality of electronic devices being organized into a first set of electronic devices configured to communicate with each other using a first basic service set identifier (BSSID) and a second set of electronic devices configured to communicate with each other using a second BSSID, wherein the first BSSID is a media access control (MAC) address of the first electronic device and the second BSSID is a MAC address of a second electronic device in the second set of electronic devices, the first and second electronic devices sharing a common identifier, the first electronic device comprising: a transceiver and processing circuitry configured to cooperate with one another to perform operations comprising: receiving and discarding frames having BSSIDs that match neither the first BSSID nor a common identifier; receiving and processing frames having BSSIDs that match either the first BSSID or the common identifier; and transmitting to the second electronic device frames for processing thereon by including in those frames the common identifier, wherein the common identifier differs from the first MAC address, the second MAC address, and a broadcast address. 11. The first electronic device of claim 10 , being configured as an access point in the wireless communication network, wherein each electronic device in each of the first and second sets of electronic devices other than the first and second electronic devices is configured as a station device in a wireless network. 12. The first electronic device of claim 10 , further comprising a memory storing instructions executable to run an application program, the common identifier being provided by the application program. 13. The first electronic device of claim 10 , wherein the transceiver and processing circuitry are further configured to cooperate with one another to send an invitation to the second electronic device, wherein acceptance of the invitation associates another common identifier with the first and second electronic devices. 14. The first electronic device of claim 10 , wherein after an invitation from the first device is accepted by the second device, the first electronic device communicates with the other electronic device(s) in the first set via a common channel, and the second electronic device communicates with the other electronic device(s) in the second set via the common channel, regardless of what channel(s) was/were used in the first set and the second set before the invitation was accepted. 15. A communication method for use with a first electronic device including a transceiver and processing circuitry, the method comprising: receiving and discarding frames having basic service set identifiers (BSSIDs) that match neither a first BSSID nor a common identifier; receiving and processing frames having BSSIDs that match either the first BSSID or the common identifier; and transmitting to a second electronic device frames for processing thereon by including in those frames the common identifier, wherein the first electronic device is provided in a wireless communication network including a plurality of electronic devices, wherein the plurality of electronic devices is organized into first and second sets of electronic devices, wherein the electronic devices in the first set are configured to communicate with each other using the first BSSID, the first set of electronic devices including the first electronic device, the first BSSID being a media access control (MAC) address of the first electronic device, and wherein the electronic devices in the second set are configured to communicate with each other using a second BSSID, the second set of electronic devices including the second electronic device, the second BSSID being a MAC address of the second electronic device, and wherein the common identifier differs from the first MAC address, the second MAC address, and a broadcast address. 16. The method of claim 15 , wherein
