A magnetic filter is disclosed suitable for use in large heating and/or cooling systems, for example heating systems using pipework between 2 inch bore and 4 inch bore. The magnetic filter includes a separation chamber in the form of a pipe, and externally-mounted magnetic 5 assemblies which are movable from a position close to the pipe to a position spaced from the pipe. The magnetic assemblies are pivotally mounted to the pipe via a framework.

What is claimed is: 1. A magnetic filter for a central heating and/or cooling system, the magnetic filter comprising: a chamber in the form of a cylindrical pipe having an inlet and an outlet at either end of the pipe; a framework fixed to an outside of the pipe, the framework including a bar running along the outside of the pipe, parallel to the pipe; the framework further including two two-part clamps, each clamp having two semi-circular pieces fixed to each other to fix the clamp around a circumference of the chamber; and multiple elongate curved magnetic assemblies which are disposed along the bar and are each pivotally mounted to the bar on a pivot disposed at one end of the magnetic assembly, each of the elongate curved magnetic assemblies being individually movable such that a major length of the elongate magnetic assembly is movable from a position close to the chamber to a position spaced from the chamber by pivoting the magnetic assembly on the pivot. 2. The magnetic filter of claim 1 , wherein an aperture is provided on each magnetic assembly, the bar passing through the aperture of the of each magnetic assembly. 3. The magnetic filter of claim 1 , wherein a stop is provided to limit the extent to which each magnetic assembly may be pivoted away from the chamber. 4. The magnetic filter of claim 3 , wherein the magnetic assemblies each include a carrier and at least one magnetic element mounted to the carrier on a side of the carrier facing towards the chamber, and in which the stop is in the form of an extension of the carrier which extends from the pivot point in an opposite direction to the greater length of the carrier. 5. The magnetic filter of claim 1 , wherein at least two magnetic assemblies are provided, and in which each magnetic assembly is an identical component, and in which each magnetic assembly includes a section of reduced width at the end of the assembly which pivotally mounts the bar, the two magnetic assemblies being pivotally mounted to the bar facing in opposite directions, with a main width of each assembly being in the same longitudinal position along the bar. 6. The magnetic filter of claim 5 , wherein the other end of the magnetic assembly to the pivot includes a section of reduced width. 7. The magnetic filter of claim 1 , wherein multiple pivotable magnetic assemblies are provided along the bar. 8. The magnetic filter of claim 1 , wherein each magnetic assembly is spring-loaded into a position where the major length is spaced from the chamber. 9. The magnetic filter of claim 8 , wherein releasable retaining means are provided at the other end of the or each magnetic assembly to the pivot, the releasable retaining means when engaged holding the or each magnetic assembly in the position close to the chamber. 10. The magnetic filter of claim 1 , wherein the bar is held in place by the clamps. 11. The magnetic filter of claim 1 , wherein the framework includes the bar and another bar running along the outside of the pipe, substantially parallel to the pipe, the bars being positioned at opposite points around the circumference of the chamber, the bars being held in place by the clamps. 12. The magnetic filter of claim 4 , wherein the at least one magnetic element is a pair of magnets. 13. The magnetic filter of claim 12 , wherein the magnet pair includes a first magnet disposed on one side of a longitudinal centreline of the carrier and a second magnet disposed on the other side of the centreline, the first and second magnets being joined to each other by a bar passing across the centreline and the bar being movable relative to the carrier on a pivot. 14. A magnetic filter for a central heating and/or cooling system, the magnetic filter comprising: a chamber in the form of a cylindrical pipe having an inlet and an outlet at either end of the pipe; a framework fixed to an outside of the pipe, the framework including a bar running along the outside of the pipe, parallel to the pipe; and multiple elongate curved magnetic assemblies which are disposed along the bar and are each pivotally mounted to the bar on a pivot disposed at one end of the magnetic assembly, each of the elongate curved magnetic assemblies being individually movable such that a major length of the elongate magnetic assembly is movable from a position close to the chamber to a position spaced from the chamber by pivoting the magnetic assembly on the pivot, each magnetic assembly being spring-loaded into the position spaced from the chamber. 15. The magnetic filter of claim 14 , wherein an aperture is provided on each magnetic assembly, the bar passing through the aperture of the or each magnetic assembly. 16. The magnetic filter of claim 14 , wherein a stop is provided to limit the extent to which each magnetic assembly may be pivoted away from the chamber. 17. The magnetic filter of claim 14 , wherein releasable retaining means are provided at the other end of each magnetic assembly to the pivot, the releasable retaining means when engaged holding the or each magnetic assembly in the position close to the chamber. 18. A magnetic filter for a central heating and/or cooling system, the magnetic filter comprising: a chamber in the form of a cylindrical pipe having an inlet and an outlet at either end of the pipe; a framework fixed to an outside of the pipe, the framework including a bar running along the outside of the pipe, parallel to the pipe; and multiple elongate curved magnetic assemblies which are disposed along the bar and are each pivotally mounted to the bar on a pivot disposed at one end of the magnetic assembly, each magnetic assembly including a carrier and at least one magnetic element, in the form of a pair of magnets, mounted to the carrier on the side of the carrier facing towards the chamber, the first magnet of the magnet pair disposed on one side of a longitudinal centreline of the carrier and a second magnet disposed on the other side of the centreline, the first and second magnets being joined to each other by a bar passing across the centreline and the bar being movable relative to the carrier on a pivot; each of the elongate curved magnetic assemblies being individually movable such that a major length of the elongate magnetic assembly is movable from a position close to the chamber to a position spaced from the chamber by pivoting the magnetic assembly on the pivot. 19. The magnetic filter of claim 18 , wherein an aperture is provided on each magnetic assembly, the bar passing through the aperture of the or each magnetic assembly. 20. The magnetic filter of claim 18 , wherein a stop is provided to limit the extent to which each magnetic assembly may be pivoted away from the chamber.
