Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

According to certain arrangements, a climate controlled bed includes an upper portion comprising a core with a top core surface and a bottom core surface. The core includes at least one passageway extending from the top core surface to the bottom core surface. The upper portion of the bed further includes at least one fluid distribution member positioned above the core, wherein the fluid distribution member is in fluid communication with at least one passageway of the core. The fluid distribution member is configured to at least partially distribute fluid within said fluid distribution member.

What is claimed is: 1. A climate controlled bed comprising: an upper portion comprising: a core having a top core surface and a bottom core surface; a passageway routed around the core and configured to deliver fluid from a location lower than the bottom core surface to a location higher than the top core surface and/or from the location higher than the top core surface to the location lower than the bottom core surface; at least one fluid distribution member in fluid communication with the passageway, the fluid distribution member comprising at least one spacer; and at least one comfort layer positioned adjacent to the fluid distribution member; a lower portion configured to support the upper portion; and at least one fluid module configured to selectively transfer fluid to or from the fluid distribution member of the upper portion through the passageway. 2. The climate controlled bed of claim 1 , wherein the upper portion further comprises a barrier layer positioned underneath the at least one spacer, the barrier layer being generally impermeable to fluids. 3. The climate controlled bed of claim 1 , wherein the fluid distribution member is divided into at least two hydraulically isolated zones, each of said zones comprising at least part of the at least one spacer. 4. The climate controlled bed of claim 1 , further comprising means to control operation of the fluid module. 5. The climate controlled bed of claim 1 , further comprising means to allow a user to selectively adjust at least one operating parameter of the bed. 6. The climate controlled bed of claim 1 , wherein the upper portion comprises a foam mattress, wherein said foam mattress comprises a plurality of foam layers including at least five different layers including at least an open-cell foam layer, a memory foam layer and another synthetic material. 7. The climate controlled bed of claim 1 , wherein the fluid distribution member comprises first and second fluid distribution members and wherein the passageway is one of multiple passageways configured to be positioned outside of the core from the fluid module to the first and second fluid distribution members. 8. The climate controlled bed of claim 7 , wherein the first and second fluid distribution members are secured to the comfort layer and the core at least in part using adhesive, stitching, and fasteners. 9. The climate controlled bed of claim 7 , wherein the first and second fluid distribution members are wrapped in an enclosure. 10. The climate controlled bed of claim 7 , wherein the first and second fluid distribution members are wrapped in a layer of fabric. 11. The climate controlled bed of claim 7 , wherein the multiple passageways are configured to be connected to the first and second fluid distribution members at a head edge of the core. 12. The climate controlled bed of claim 7 , wherein the upper portion comprises one or more first covering layers or materials and the lower portion comprises one or more second covering layers or materials. 13. The climate controlled bed of claim 7 , wherein the upper portion comprises more than one first covering layer or material and the lower portion comprises more than one second covering layer or material. 14. The climate controlled bed of claim 7 , wherein the first and second fluid distribution members are configured to be wrapped by multiple layers including a layer of fabric and a layer of other covering material. 15. The climate controlled bed of claim 1 , wherein there are no internal openings through the core. 16. The climate controlled bed of claim 1 , wherein the fluid comprises a liquid. 17. The climate controlled bed of claim 1 , wherein the fluid comprises a gas. 18. The climate controlled bed of claim 1 , wherein the comfort layer and the fluid distribution member are part of a top member configured to be positioned on top of the core, wherein the core comprises a mattress, and wherein the lower portion comprises a foundation having at least a panel and fabric covering. 19. The climate controlled bed of claim 1 , wherein the fluid module is configured to be positioned in the lower portion. 20. The climate controlled bed of claim 1 , wherein the fluid module is part of the lower portion and configured to be positioned at least partially below the upper portion. 21. The climate controlled bed of claim 1 , wherein the at least one spacer is positioned in at least one recess in the fluid distribution member. 22. The climate controlled bed of claim 1 , wherein the fluid distribution member comprises a plurality of conduits through which fluids may be directed, wherein the fluids comprise a fluid other than air. 23. The climate controlled bed of claim 22 , wherein the plurality of conduits in the fluid distribution member are formed using molding technologies. 24. The climate controlled bed of claim 1 , wherein the core comprises a mattress comprising foam and a cover of the mattress. 25. A climate controlled bed comprising: an upper portion comprising: a core having a top core surface and a bottom core surface; a passageway routed around the core and configured to deliver fluid from one of the top core surface and the bottom core surface to the other of the top core surface and the bottom core surface; a fluid distribution member in fluid communication with the passageway, the fluid distribution member comprising at least one means to distribute fluid; and a comfort layer positioned adjacent to the fluid distribution member; a lower portion configured to support the upper portion; and means configured to selectively transfer fluid to or from the fluid distribution member through the passageway. 26. The climate controlled bed of claim 25 , wherein the fluid distribution member comprises first and second fluid distribution members and wherein the passageway is one of multiple passageways configured to be positioned outside of the core and to connect to one or both of the first and second fluid distribution members at a head edge of the core, wherein the upper portion comprises one or more first covering layers or materials and the lower portion comprises one or more second covering layers. 27.
