Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A tubing assembly is provided that can comprise a plurality of tubes or lumens that can be disposed within a head of a peristaltic pump. The tubing assembly can provide a flow rate or volume capacity that is generally equal to or greater than that achieved with a comparable prior art tube while operating at higher pressures than that possible using the prior art tube. Further, in accordance with some embodiments, the tubing assembly can achieve a longer working life than a comparable prior art tube, and the load on the pump motor can be reduced such that the pump life is increased and/or a larger pump motor is not required to achieve such advantageous results.

First claim

What is claimed is: 1. A method of manufacturing a tubing and adapter assembly for a peristaltic pump, comprising: providing a tube comprising a first end and a second end, the tube having an annular tube wall defining an opening extending between the first end and the second end, the opening configured such that fluid is capable of flowing from the first end to the second end through the opening; providing a first tube gripper defining at least one prong having a first prong interference portion on an exterior surface; inserting the at least one prong of the first tube gripper into the first end of the tube, such that the first prong interference portion grips an interior surface of the tube wall adjacent the first end of the tube; providing a second tube gripper defining at least one prong having a second prong interference portion on an exterior surface; inserting the at least one prong of the second tube gripper into the second end of the tube, such that the second prong interference portion grips an interior surface of the tube wall adjacent the second end of the tube; molding a first adaptor comprising an annular surface defining a first flow passage, a first tube interface portion, a first pump interface portion and a first mounting interface portion, wherein the molding is performed such that the first tube interface portion is molded over the first tube gripper forming a seal on an exterior surface of the annular tube wall and the first tube gripper, and wherein the molding is performed such that the first mounting interface portion is positioned between the first tube interface portion and the first pump interface portion; and molding a second adaptor comprising an annular surface defining a second flow passage, a second tube interface portion, a second pump interface portion and a second mounting interface portion, wherein the molding is performed such that the second tube interface portion is molded over the second tube gripper forming a seal on an exterior surface of the annular tube wall and the second tube gripper, and wherein the second mounting interface portion is positioned between the second tube interface portion and the second pump interface portion. 2. The method of claim 1 , wherein molding of the first adaptor includes molding a first external system interface which comprises one of a hose barb adapter, a threaded adapter, a sanitary adapter and a quick-release adapter. 3. The method of claim 2 , wherein molding of the second adaptor includes molding a second external system interface which comprises one of a hose barb adapter, a threaded adapter, a sanitary adapter and a quick-release adapter. 4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising providing a cap and inserting the cap into one of the first tube gripper and the second tube gripper. 5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the providing of the first tube gripper includes providing the first tube gripper with a first tube interference portion which comprises a barb. 6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the providing of the second tube gripper includes providing the second tube gripper with a second tube interference portion which comprises a barb.
