What is claimed is: 1. A spacecraft servicing system, comprising: a host ship; a resupply spacecraft; and mission extension pods each comprising at least one spacecraft servicing component and a docking mechanism, the mission extension pods collectively carried by the host ship, the host ship configured to transfer a mission extension pod of the mission extension pods to a location external to a target spacecraft where the docking mechanism of the mission extension pod engages with the target spacecraft in order to service the target spacecraft with the at least one spacecraft servicing component of the mission extension pod, the docking mechanism of the mission extension pod securing the mission extension pod to the target spacecraft, the host ship configured to retrieve at least some of the mission extension pods supplied from the resupply spacecraft at a selected orbit in space and to retain the at least some of the mission extension pods on an external portion of the host ship, wherein each of the mission extension pods comprises a thruster assembly configured to alter at least one of an orbit or a velocity of the each of the mission extension pods. 2. The spacecraft servicing system of claim 1 , wherein the host ship is configured to retrieve at least some of the mission extension pods from one or more selected orbits in space. 3. The spacecraft servicing system of claim 2 , wherein the host ship is configured to collect the at least some of the mission extension pods from the one or more selected orbits in space and position the at least some of the mission extension pods at a position in proximity to one or more target spacecraft, and wherein the at least some of the mission extension pods are each configured to engage with the one or more target spacecraft using the docking mechanism at the position in proximity to the one or more target spacecraft. 4. The spacecraft servicing system of claim 2 , wherein the host ship is configured to retrieve the at least some of the mission extension pods from another spacecraft at the one or more selected orbits in space. 5. The spacecraft servicing system of claim 1 , wherein the host ship comprises a pod retrieval mechanism, the pod retrieval mechanism configured to engage and secure at least one mission extension pod of the mission extension pods in space for transport and to deploy the at least one mission extension pod at the target spacecraft. 6. The spacecraft servicing system of claim 5 , wherein the pod retrieval mechanism comprises a robotic arm coupled to the host ship. 7. The spacecraft servicing system of claim 5 , wherein the host ship is configured to retrieve, carry, and then deploy the mission extension pods at selected orbits in space. 8. The spacecraft servicing system of claim 5 , wherein the host ship is configured to secure the at least one mission extension pod directly to an external portion of the target spacecraft with the pod retrieval mechanism. 9. The spacecraft servicing system of claim 1 , wherein the host ship is configured to remove the at least some of the mission extension pods from the resupply spacecraft at the selected orbit in space and to transfer the at least some of the mission extension pods to an external portion of the host ship. 10. The spacecraft servicing system of claim 1 , wherein the docking mechanism of each of the mission extension pods comprises a spear-shaped extendable device configured to engage with an engine of the target spacecraft. 11. A spacecraft servicing system, comprising: a host ship; and mission extension pods carried by the host ship, each of the mission extension pods comprising at least one spacecraft servicing component for servicing one or more target spacecraft and a docking mechanism for securing the mission extension pods to the one or more target spacecraft with the mission extension pods remaining external to the one or more target spacecraft, wherein the host ship is configured to retrieve at least some of the mission extension pods from one or more selected orbits in space and to transfer at least some of the mission extension pods to the one or more target spacecraft in order to service the one or more target spacecraft with the at least one spacecraft servicing component of the at least some of the mission extension pods, wherein each of the mission extension pods comprises a thruster assembly configured to alter at least one of an orbit or a velocity of the each of the mission extension pods. 12. The spacecraft servicing system of claim 11 , wherein the host ship is configured to retrieve the at least some of the mission extension pods from a pod resupply device carrying the mission extension pods at the one or more selected orbits. 13. The spacecraft servicing system of claim 12 , wherein the host ship is configured to rendezvous with the pod resupply device at the one or more selected orbits and to transfer the at least some of the mission extension pods carried by the pod resupply device to the host ship. 14. The spacecraft servicing system of claim 11 , wherein the docking mechanism of each of the mission extension pods comprises a spear-shaped extendable device configured to engage with an engine of the one or more target spacecraft. 15. The spacecraft servicing system of claim 11 , wherein the host ship is configured to transfer the at least some of the mission extension pods to the one or more target spacecraft using only a propulsion system of the host ship. 16. A spacecraft servicing system, comprising: a host ship; a resupply spacecraft; and mission extension pods each comprising at least one spacecraft servicing component and a docking mechanism, the mission extension pods collectively carried by the host ship, the host ship configured to transfer a mission extension pod of the mission extension pods to a location external to a target spacecraft where the docking mechanism of the mission extension pod engages with the target spacecraft in order to service the target spacecraft with the at least one spacecraft servicing component of the mission extension pod, the docking mechanism of the mission extension pod securing the mission extension pod to the target spacecraft, the host ship configured to retrieve at least some of the mission extension pods supplied from the resupply spacecraft at a selected orbit in space and to retain the at least some of the mission extension pods on an external portion of the host ship, wherein the host ship comprises a pod retrieval mechanism, the pod retrieval mechanism configured to engage and secure at least one mission extension pod of the mission extension pods in space for transport and to deploy the at least one mission extension pod at the target spacecraft, and wherein the pod retrieval mechanism comprises a robotic arm coupled to the host ship.
