Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Program products, methods, and systems for providing location-aware fitness monitoring services are disclosed. In an embodiment of the present invention, a method of displaying a route traversed by an athlete equipped with a location-aware portable fitness monitoring device includes the steps of (a) receiving data describing a plurality of satellite navigational system waypoints that are acquired as the athlete engages in a fitness activity, (b) identifying a map area based on a location indicated by the data describing the plurality of satellite navigational system waypoints, (c) determining the route traversed by the athlete based on the data describing the plurality of satellite navigational system waypoints and based on the location of one or more known paths associated with the map area, and (d) displaying the route traversed by the athlete on top of the map area.

What is claimed is: 1. A method of displaying motivational content along a route traversed by an athlete, comprising: displaying a plurality of routes on a display of a portable electronic device of the athlete, the plurality of routes comprising a first challenge route; receiving a user input on the portable electronic device, the user input comprising a selection of the first challenge route; receiving data describing a plurality of satellite navigational system waypoints that are acquired as the athlete engages in a fitness activity; identifying a map area based on a location indicated by the data describing the plurality of satellite navigational system waypoints; determining first performance information of the athlete along the first challenge route based on the data describing the plurality of satellite navigational system waypoints; receiving second performance information related to a second athlete's traversal of a second challenge route; generating comparative performance information based on a comparison of the first performance information to the second performance information; displaying the route traversed by the athlete on top of the map area generating motivational content based on the comparative performance information; displaying the motivational content on the display; displaying the second challenge route traversed by the athlete on portable electronic device of the second athlete; receiving, on the portable electronic device of the athlete, a first notification to begin traversal of the first challenge route and a second notification to end traversal of the first challenge route; and receiving, on the portable electronic device of the second athlete, a third notification to begin traversal of the second challenge route and a fourth notification end traversal of the second challenge route; wherein the first notification and the third notification are received simultaneously, and wherein the second and the fourth notification are received simultaneously. 2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the motivational content comprises an indication of the second performance information related to the second athlete's traversal of the second challenge route. 3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising generating second motivational content based on the comparative performance information. 4. The method of claim 3 , further comprising displaying the second motivational content on a display of a portable electronic device of the second athlete. 5. The method of claim 4 , wherein displaying the motivational content is done in real-time, and wherein the displaying the second motivational content is done in real-time. 6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first challenge route and the second challenge route are the same route. 7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first challenge route and the second challenge route are different routes. 8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising: determining, based on the received waypoints, whether the athlete is at the starting point of the first challenge route. 9. The method of claim 8 , further comprising: receiving, on the portable electronic device of the athlete, a notification to begin traversal of the first challenge route. 10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the motivational content is displayed after receiving the notification to begin traversal of the route. 11. The method of claim 1 , further comprising: determining, based on the received waypoints, whether the athlete is at the end of the first challenge route; and receiving, on the portable electronic device of the athlete, a notification to end traversal of the first challenge route. 12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the motivational content is displayed after receiving the notification to end traversal of the first challenge route. 13. A method of displaying motivational content along a route traversed by an athlete, comprising: displaying a plurality of routes on a display of a portable electronic device of the athlete; receiving a user input on the portable electronic device, the user input comprising a selection of a first route of the plurality of routes; receiving data describing a plurality of satellite navigational system waypoints that are acquired as the athlete engages in a fitness activity; identifying a map area based on a location indicated by the data describing the plurality of satellite navigational system waypoints; determining performance information of the athlete along the first route based on the data describing the plurality of satellite navigational system waypoints; generating motivational content based on the performance information; displaying the first route traversed by the athlete on top of the map area displaying a second route traversed by the athlete on portable electronic device of a second athlete; receiving, on the portable electronic device of the athlete, a first notification to begin traversal of the first route and a second notification to end traversal of the first route; and receiving, on the portable electronic device of the second athlete, a third notification to begin traversal of the second route and a fourth notification end traversal of the second route; wherein the first notification and the third notification are received simultaneously, and wherein the second and the fourth notification are received simultaneously. 14. The method of claim 13 , further comprising displaying the motivational content over the display of the route traversed by the athlete. 15. The method of claim 13 , further comprising displaying the performance information as a graphical representation overlaying the route traversed. 16. The method of claim 13 , further comprising providing second motivational content after the athlete completes traversal of the route. 17. The method of claim 13 , further comprising: determining, based on the received waypoints, whether the athlete is at the starting point of the first route; and displaying the motivational content on the display after determining that the athlete is at the starting point of the first route.
