This invention provides a polymer that is useful in a variety of applications, including as a binder polymer of a coating composition, and especially a packaging coating composition. Packaging articles (e.g., containers) comprising the polymer and methods of making such packaging articles are also provided.

The invention claimed is: 1. A food or beverage can coating composition that includes: A polyether polymer having a glass transition temperature (“Tg”) of at least 80° C. and less than 130° C., a number average molecular weight of at least 2,000, and a backbone that includes a polycyclic group having ring atoms that include one or more heteroatoms; and a carrier liquid; wherein the coating composition is at least substantially free of bisphenol A and diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A, and is a liquid suitable for use in forming a food-contact coating. 2. The food or beverage can coating composition of claim 1 , wherein the backbone includes —CH 2 —CH(OH)—CH 2 — segments. 3. The food or beverage can coating composition of claim 1 , wherein the polyether polymer includes one or more of the following segments of Formula I: —O—Ar—(R n —Ar) n —O—, (I) wherein: each Ar is independently an aryl or heteroaryl group, each n is independently 0 or 1, R, if present, is a divalent organic group, and the two oxygen atoms are each an ether oxygen. 4. The food or beverage can coating composition of claim 3 , wherein n is 0. 5. The food or beverage can coating composition of claim 3 , wherein each n is 1 and R includes the polycyclic group. 6. The food or beverage can coating composition of claim 1 , wherein the polyether polymer has a Tg from about 80° C. to about 110° C. 7. The food or beverage can coating composition of claim 1 , wherein the backbone includes a plurality of polycyclic groups. 8. The food or beverage can coating composition of claim 7 , wherein the coating composition is a solvent-based system, and wherein the polyether polymer constitutes at least 30 wt-% of the total resin solids in the coating composition. 9. The food or beverage can coating composition of claim 7 , wherein the polycyclic group includes at least two cyclic groups in which one or more atoms are present in the rings of both of the at least two cyclic groups. 10. The food or beverage can coating composition of claim 1 , wherein the polyether polymer has a number average molecular weight of at least 3,000 and is a reaction product of ingredients including a polyepoxide and a polyhydric phenol. 11. The food or beverage can coating composition of claim 1 , wherein the polyether polymer is a reaction product of ingredients including a diepoxide and a dihydric phenol, and wherein one or both of the diepoxide and the dihydric phenol includes a polycyclic group. 12. The food or beverage can coating composition of claim 1 , wherein the polycyclic group is saturated. 13. The food or beverage can coating composition of claim 1 , wherein the polycyclic group comprises a bicyclic group. 14. The food or beverage can coating composition of claim 13 , wherein the bicyclic group is a saturated bicyclic group. 15. The food or beverage can coating composition of claim 14 , wherein the bicyclic group includes six-membered cyclic rings. 16. The food or beverage can coating composition of claim 14 , wherein the bicyclic group includes more than one heteroatom. 17. The food or beverage can coating composition of claim 14 , wherein the bicyclic group includes cyclic rings containing more than one oxygen heteroatom. 18. The food or beverage can coating composition of claim 14 , wherein the bicyclic group includes a quaternary carbon atom. 19. The food or beverage can coating composition of claim 1 , wherein the polycyclic group comprises a tricyclic or higher group. 20. The food or beverage can coating composition of claim 1 , wherein the polycyclic group comprises an isosorbide group. 21. The food or beverage can coating composition of claim 1 , wherein the coating composition is a water-based system, and wherein the polyether polymer constitutes at least 10 wt-% of the total resin solids in the coating composition. 22. The food or beverage can coating composition of claim 1 , wherein the coating composition includes a crosslinker. 23. The food or beverage can coating composition of claim 22 , wherein the crosslinker comprises a phenoplast. 24. A metal food or beverage can or a portion thereof having a food-contact coating formed from the food or beverage can coating composition of claim 1 . 25. A food or beverage can coating composition that includes: a polyether polymer having a backbone formed from reactants including a diglycidyl ester or diglycidyl ether of tetramethylcyclobutanediol, the polyether polymer having a number average molecular weight of at least 2,000 and having a glass transition temperature (“Tg”) of at least 80° C. and less than 130° C.; and a carrier liquid; wherein the coating composition is at least substantially free of bisphenol A and diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A, and is suitable for use in forming a food-contact coating. 26. A method, including: applying a food or beverage can coating composition on at least a portion of a surface of a metal substrate prior to, or after, forming the substrate into a food or beverage container or a portion thereof, wherein the coating composition includes: a polyether polymer having a backbone formed from reactants including a diglycidyl ester or diglycidyl ether of tetramethylcyclobutanediol, the polyether polymer having a number average molecular weight of at least 2,000 and having a glass transition temperature (“Tg”) of at least 80° C. and less than 130° C.; and a carrier liquid; and wherein the coating composition is at least substantially free of bisphenol A and diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A, and is suitable for use in forming a food-contact coating. 27. A method, including: applying a coating composition on at least a portion of a surface of a metal substrate prior to, or after, forming the substrate into a food or beverage container or a portion thereof; wherein the coating composition is at least substantially free of bisphenol A and diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A and is a liquid comprising: a polyether polymer having a glass transition temperature (“Tg”) of at least 80° C. and less than 130° C., a number average molecular weight of at least 2,000, and a backbone that includes a polycyclic group having ring atoms that include one or more heteroatoms; and a carrier liquid. 28. The method of claim 27 , wherein the polycyclic group comprises an isosorbide group.
