Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Methods, systems, and apparatus, including computer programs encoded on computer storage media, for unmanned aerial vehicle authorization and geofence envelope determination. One of the methods includes determining, by an electronic system in an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV), an estimated fuel remaining in the UAV. An estimated fuel consumption of the UAV is determined. Estimated information associated with wind affecting the UAV is determined using information obtained from sensors included in the UAV. Estimated flights times remaining for a current path, and one or more alternative flight paths, are determined using the determined estimated fuel remaining, determined estimated fuel consumption, determined information associated wind, and information describing each flight path. In response to the electronic system determining that the estimated fuel remaining, after completion of the current flight path, would be below a first threshold, an alternative flight path is selected.

What is claimed is: 1. A method, comprising: obtaining, by a computing system in communication with one or more unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) systems, information identifying a requested flight operation for a UAV to perform; transmitting, by the computing system, an authorization request associated with the requested flight operation to an external system associated with a regulatory agency, wherein transmitting the authorization request to the external system includes: automatically generating an authorization request report identifying the requested flight operation, the authorization request report including risk assessment information associated with the operator of the UAV; and transmitting the authorization request report to the external system; transmitting, from the computing system based on information obtained from the external system, information associated with a response to the authorization request to configure the UAV to perform the requested flight operation; and direct the UAV to configure and perform the requested flight operation. 2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the authorization request report is generated based on requirements specific to the regulatory agency. 3. The method of claim 2 , wherein automatically generating the authorization request report comprises: identifying, automatically by the computing system in response to the information identifying the requested flight operation, information to include in the authorization request report based on the requirements specific to the regulatory agency. 4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the authorization request report indicates at least one of the UAV to perform the requested flight operation, an operator of the UAV, one or more components of the UAV, a status of the UAV, a status of the one or more components, or flight path information of the UAV. 5. The method of claim 4 , wherein, where the authorization request report indicates the operator of the UAV. 6. The method of claim 1 , wherein contents of the authorization request report are based on whether the requested flight operation is to occur over a populated area. 7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the authorization request report identifies a geofence envelope for approval by the regulatory agency. 8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the requested flight operation corresponds to one or both of a previously approved geofence envelope for the UAV or a request for a safe landing location for the UAV. 9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the external system associated with the regulatory agency is one of a system operated by the regulatory agency or a system operated on behalf of the regulatory agency. 10. An apparatus, comprising: one or more memories; and one or more processors configured to execute instructions stored in the one or more memories to: transmit, to an external system associated with a regulatory agency, an authorization request associated with a requested flight operation for an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV); configure, based on information obtained from the external system responsive to the authorization request, the UAV to perform the requested flight operation; and direct the UAV to perform the requested flight operation. 11. The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the authorization request includes an authorization request report automatically generated based on the requested flight operation and requirements specific to the regulatory agency. 12. The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the authorization request includes a request for the regulatory agency to approve a geofence envelope for the requested flight operation. 13. The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the authorization request includes risk information where the requested flight operation is to occur over a populated area. 14. The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein, to configure the UAV to perform the requested flight operation, the one or more processors are configured to execute the instructions to: transmit information indicative of an approval of the requested flight operation to a ground control station in communication with the UAV. 15. A system, comprising: an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) to perform a requested flight operation; a ground control station in communication with the UAV; and one or more servers configured to: obtain information identifying the requested flight operation from the ground control station; transmit an authorization request associated with the requested flight operation to an external system associated with a regulatory agency; and transmit, to the ground control station based on a response to the authorization request, information usable to configure the UAV to perform the requested flight operation; wherein, responsive to receiving the information, the ground control station is configured to direct the UAV to: configure the UAV; and perform the requested flight operation. 16. The system of claim 15 , wherein the authorization request identifies a geofence envelope for approval by the regulatory agency. 17. The system of claim 15 , wherein the requested flight operation corresponds to a previously approved geofence envelope for the UAV. 18. The system of claim 15 , wherein the requested flight operation corresponds to a request for a safe landing location for the UAV. 19. The system of claim 15 , wherein the authorization request is automatically generated at the one or more servers to include one or more of the UAV to perform the requested flight operation, an operator of the UAV, one or more components of the UAV, or flight path information of the UAV.
