Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A tracking system passively tracks and records searches conducted by actual search engine users. The recorded data for each search event preferably includes the search query submitted, the search engine used, the search result item (e.g., web page) selected, the position (e.g., page number) of this item, and the user's IP address. The collected data is aggregated and analyzed to generate data regarding the search queries used to locate and access particular destinations (e.g., web pages and sites). This data may be used for various purposes, such as (1) to generate reports showing, e.g., how users reach a particular destination from different search engines and geographic locations, (2) to select content to display on a destination page, such that the content is relevant to search queries commonly used to locate that page, and (3) to update the database of one search engine to reflect searches conducted on other search engines.

The embodiments of the invention in which an exclusive property or privilege is claimed are defined as follows: 1. A method of collecting search data and updating content based on search activity, the method comprising: sending, by a first computing device to a second computing device, an executable component, wherein the executable component is configured to be executed in response to the second computing device accessing a web page, wherein the executable component is further configured to obtain search query usage data corresponding to search queries originating at the second computing device and to generate a search record for transmission to the first computing device; receiving, by the first computing device, the search record, wherein the search record includes the search query usage data obtained by the executable component as of the time of the receiving; storing, by the first computing device, search activity data comprising a collection of search records that includes the search record; selecting, by the first computing device based on the search activity data, updated content for a page or entry associated with a search result that is relevant to search queries used to identify that search result; and updating, by the first computing device, the page or entry to include the selected updated content. 2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising ranking search results responsive to the search query based, at least in part, on the search activity data. 3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the search activity data on which the ranking is based includes search records of a user of the second computing device. 4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the search activity data on which the ranking is based includes search records of one or more other users. 5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the search record includes a code corresponding to an instance of execution of the executable component, and wherein the executable component is configured to request a resource from the first computing device. 6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the resource is unique to the instance of execution of the executable component, and wherein the code is used to name the search record. 7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the search queries originating at the second computing device are submitted to a plurality of search engines. 8. A computer storage device having computer-executable instructions embodied thereon for collecting search data and updating content based on search activity, wherein the instructions, in response to being executed by a computer system comprising one or more computing devices, cause the computer system to: send, to a user computing device, an executable component, wherein the executable component is configured to be executed in response to the user computing device accessing a web page, wherein the executable component is further configured to obtain search query usage data corresponding to search queries originating at the user computing device and to generate a search record for transmission to the computer system; receive the search record, wherein the search record includes the search query usage data obtained by the executable component as of the time of the receiving; store search activity data comprising a collection of search records that includes the search record; based on the search activity data, select updated content for a page or entry associated with a search result that is relevant to search queries used to identify that search result; and update the page or entry to include the selected updated content. 9. The computer storage device of claim 8 , wherein the instructions, in response to being executed by the computer system, further cause the computer system to rank search results responsive to the search query based, at least in part, on the search activity data. 10. The computer storage device of claim 9 , wherein the search activity data on which the ranking is based includes search records of a user of the user computing device. 11. The computer storage device of claim 10 , wherein the search activity data on which the ranking is based includes search records of one or more other users. 12. The computer storage device of claim 8 , wherein the search record includes a code corresponding to an instance of execution of the executable component, and wherein the executable component is configured to request a resource from the computer system. 13. The computer storage device of claim 12 , wherein the resource is unique to the instance of execution of the executable component and the code is used to name the search record. 14. The computer storage device of claim 8 , wherein the search queries originating at the user computing device are submitted to a plurality of search engines. 15. A computer system comprising one or more computing devices, the computer system capable of collecting search data and updating content based on search activity, the computer system comprising: one or more processors configured to execute instructions that cause the computer system to: send, to a user computing device, an executable component, wherein the executable component is configured to be executed in response to the user computing device accessing a web page, wherein the executable component is further configured to obtain search query usage data corresponding to search queries originating at the user computing device and to generate a search record for transmission to the computer system, receive the search record, wherein the search record includes the search query usage data obtained by the executable component as of the time of the receiving; based on search activity data, select updated content for a page or entry associated with a search result that is relevant to search queries used to identify that search result; and update the page or entry to include the selected updated content; and one or more memories configured to store the search activity data as a collection of search records that includes the search record. 16. The computer system of claim 15 , wherein the instructions further cause the computer system to rank search results responsive to the search query based, at least in part, on the search activity data. 17. The computer system of claim 16 , wherein the search activity data on which the ranking is based includes search records of a user of the user computing device. 18. The computer system of claim 17 , wherein the search activity data on which the ranking is based includes search records of one or more other users. 19. The computer system of claim 15 , wherein the search record includes a code corresponding to an instance of execution of the executable component, and wherein the executable component is configured to request a resource from the computer system. 20. The computer system of claim 19 , wherein the resource is unique to the instance of execution of the executable component and the code is used to name the search record. 21. The computer system of claim 15 , wherein the search queries originating at the user computing device are submitted to a plurality of search engines.
