Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A mandibular repositioning apparatus may include anchoring devices shaped for positioning in an intraoral cavity of a patient. Each of the anchoring devices may be configured to be positioned in a respective bone of a respective jaw of the patients. The mandibular repositioning apparatus may include one or more connecting structures configured to displace a lower jaw in an anterior-posterior direction relative to an upper jaw. The one or more connecting structures and the anchoring devices may be configured to be arranged to produce an anterior-posterior force component to move the lower jaw that is greater than a vertical force component.

What is claimed is: 1. A mandibular repositioning apparatus comprising: a plurality of anchoring devices shaped for positioning in an intraoral cavity of a patient, wherein each of the plurality of anchoring devices is configured to be positioned in a respective bone of a respective jaw of the patients; and one or more connecting structures configured to displace a lower jaw in an anterior-posterior direction relative to an upper jaw, wherein the one or more connecting structures and the plurality of anchoring devices are configured to be arranged to produce an anterior-posterior force component to move the lower jaw that is greater than a vertical force component. 2. The mandibular repositioning apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the vertical force component is zero. 3. The mandibular repositioning apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the one or more connecting structures are removably couplable to the plurality of anchoring devices by a mechanism. 4. The mandibular repositioning apparatus of claim 3 , wherein the mechanism is selected from one of a snap-fit coupling, magnetic coupling, interference fit, locking surface, adhesive, removable fastener, cam lock, interlocking mechanical coupling, or fastening feature. 5. The mandibular repositioning apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the one or more connecting structures comprises an elastic structure. 6. The mandibular repositioning apparatus of claim 5 , wherein the elastic structure is configured to exert anterior-posterior forces without applying vertical forces. 7. The mandibular repositioning apparatus of claim 5 , wherein the elastic structure is configurable to displace the lower jaw in an anterior direction. 8. The mandibular repositioning apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the one or more connecting structures comprises a stiff structure. 9. The mandibular repositioning apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the stiff structure exhibits substantially no deformation under load. 10. The mandibular repositioning apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the one or more connecting structures comprises a plate structure. 11. The mandibular repositioning apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the plate structure comprises a geometry selected from one of a circular, elliptical, triangular, and rectangular geometry. 12. The mandibular repositioning apparatus of claim 1 , wherein a first of the plurality of anchoring devices are configured to be anchored to the upper jaw of the patient. 13. The mandibular repositioning apparatus of claim 12 , wherein a second of the plurality of anchoring devices are configured to be anchored to the lower jaw of the patient. 14. The mandibular repositioning apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the one or more connecting structures are configured to be couplable to a first of the plurality of anchoring devices that are configured to be anchored to the lower jaw of the patient. 15. The mandibular repositioning apparatus of claim 14 , wherein the one or more connecting structures are configured to be couplable to a second of the plurality of anchoring devices that are configured to be anchored to the upper jaw of the patient. 16. The mandibular repositioning apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of anchoring devices comprises at least one pin anchoring device and the one or more connecting structures are configured to be couplable to the pin anchoring device. 17. The mandibular repositioning apparatus of claim 16 , wherein the plurality of anchoring devices comprises at least one pivoting anchoring device and the one or more connecting structures are configured to be couplable to the pivoting anchoring device. 18. The mandibular repositioning apparatus of claim 17 , wherein the at least one pivoting anchoring device is configured to be placed in the lower jaw. 19. The mandibular repositioning apparatus of claim 16 , wherein the at least one pin anchoring device is configured to be placed in the upper jaw. 20. A mandibular repositioning apparatus comprising: a plurality of anchoring devices shaped for positioning in an intraoral cavity of a patient, wherein each of the plurality of anchoring devices is configured to be positioned in a respective bone of a respective jaw of the patients; and means for displacing a lower jaw in an anterior-posterior direction relative to an upper jaw, wherein the means for displacing the lower jaw and the plurality of anchoring devices are configured to be arranged to produce an anterior-posterior force component greater than a vertical force component along a vertical direction.
