A surgical frame and method for use thereof is provided. The surgical frame is capable of reconfiguration before, during, or after surgery. The surgical frame includes a translating beam that is moveable between at least a first lateral position and a second lateral position. The translating beam is used to join a first support portion and a second support portion of the surgical frame to one another, and movement of the translating beam affords access to a patient receiving area.

I claim: 1. A method of adjusting portions of a surgical frame comprising: supporting a patient support portion by a support platform, a first support portion, and a second support portion of the surgical frame, with the first support portion pivotably supporting a first portion of the patient support portion, the second support portion pivotably supporting a second portion of the patient support portion, and the first support portion and the second support portion spacing the patient support portion from the support platform, the support platform including a first end portion, a second end portion, and a translating beam extending between the first end portion and the second end portion, supporting portions of a patient on the first portion and the second portion of the patient support portion; pivoting the first portion and the second portion of the patient support portion about a single axis of rotation to pivot the patient between at least a first pivotal position and a second pivotal position relative to the support platform, the first support portion, and the second support portion; and adjusting relative positions of the patient support portion and the translating beam between a first relative position and a second relative position; wherein, when in the first relative position, a majority portion of the translating beam is positioned on a first side of the single axis of rotation, and when in the second relative position, the majority portion of translating beam is positioned on an opposite second side of the single axis of rotation. 2. The method of claim 1 , wherein a vertical plane extends through the single axis of rotation, and, when the majority of the translating beam is on the first side of the single axis of rotation, the majority of the translating beam is located on a first side of the vertical plane, and when the majority of the translating beam is on the second side of the single axis of rotation, the majority of the translating beam is located on a second side of the vertical plane. 3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising adjusting the relative positions of the patient support portion and the translating beam to one of the first relative position and the second relative position; positioning a surgical table or gurney with the patient laying thereon under the patient support portion in a patient receiving area defined in part by the translating beam; and transferring the patient from the surgical table or gurney to the patient support portion from the surgical table or gurney. 4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the first support portion and the second support portion are each expandable and contractable between an upper height position and a lower height position; and further comprising, before the surgical table or gurney and the patient laying on the surgical table or gurney are positioned in the patient receiving area, raising the first support portion and the second support portion toward the upper height positions to correspondingly raise the patient support portion. 5. The method of claim 4 , further comprising, after the surgical table or gurney and the patient are positioned in the patient receiving area, lowering the first support portion and the second support portion to position the patient support portion adjacent the patient laying on the surgical table or gurney to facilitate transfer of the patient thereto. 6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising moving the translating beam to a position to avoid contact with feet and/or legs of a surgeon operating on the patient. 7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising automatically positioning the translating beam underneath the patient support portion as the patient is pivoted thereby. 8. A method of adjusting portions of a surgical frame comprising: supporting a patient support portion by a support platform, a first support portion, and a second support portion of the surgical frame, with the support platform including a first end portion, a second end portion, and a translating beam extending between the first end portion and the second end portion, pivoting the first portion and the second portion of the patient support portion relative to the first support portion and the second support portion, respectively, and about a single axis of rotation; and adjusting relative positions of the patient support portion and the translating beam between a first relative position and a second relative position; wherein, when in the first relative position, a majority portion of the translating beam is positioned on a first side of a vertical plane extending through the single axis of rotation, and when in the second relative position, the majority portion of translating beam is positioned on an opposite second side of the vertical plane extending through the single axis of rotation. 9. The method of claim 8 , further comprising supporting portions of a patient on the patient support portion, and pivoting the patient between a first pivotal position and a second pivotal position via the pivoting of the first portion and the second portion of the patient support portion. 10. The method of claim 9 , further comprising adjusting the relative positions of the patient support portion and the translating beam to one of the first relative position and the second relative position; positioning a surgical table or gurney with the patient laying thereon under the patient support portion in a patient receiving area defined in part by the translating beam; and transferring the patient from the surgical table or gurney to the patient support portion from the surgical table or gurney. 11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the first support portion and the second support portion are each expandable and contractable between an upper height position and a lower height position; and further comprising, before the surgical table or gurney and the patient laying on the surgical table or gurney are positioned in the patient receiving area, raising the first support portion and the second support portion toward the upper height positions to correspondingly raise the patient support portion. 12. The method of claim 11 , further comprising, after the surgical table or gurney and the patient are positioned in the patient receiving area, lowering the first support portion and the second support portion to position the patient support portion adjacent the patient laying on the surgical table or gurney to facilitate transfer of the patient thereto. 13. The method of claim 8 , further comprising moving the translating beam to a position to avoid contact with feet and/or legs of a surgeon operating on the patient. 14. The method of claim 8 , further comprising automatically positioning the translating beam underneath the patient support portion as the patient is pivoted thereby. 15. A method of adjusting portions of a surgical frame comprising: pivoting a first portion and a second portion of a patient support portion of the surgical frame about a single axis of rotation that extends through a first support portion of the surgical frame and supports the first portion of the patient support portion, and that extends through a second support portion of the surgical frame and supports the second portion of the patient support portion; and supporting the first support portion and the second support portion by a support structure of the surgical frame with the first support portion being supported adjacent a first end of the support structure and the second support portion being supported adjacent an opposite second end of the support structure; adjusting relative positions of
