A unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) includes a fuselage including a top, a bottom, a cavity that forms a cargo bay between the top and the bottom, and a lower access opening in the bottom for lowering a payload from the cargo bay. A movable stage is coupled to the fuselage and adjustable between an upper position in which the stage is above the cargo bay and a lower position in which the stage is at the bottom of the fuselage, the stage including an opening extending through the stage. The UAV also includes a winch disposed in the fuselage and a tether coupled to the winch. The winch is configured to be secured to the payload and is movable through the opening in the stage so as to raise or lower the payload.

What is claimed is: 1. An unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) comprising: a fuselage including a top, a bottom, a cavity that forms a cargo bay between the top and the bottom, and a lower access opening in the bottom for lowering a payload from the cargo bay; a movable stage coupled to the fuselage and adjustable between an upper position in which the stage is above the cargo bay and a lower position in which the stage is at the bottom of the fuselage, the stage including an opening extending through the stage; an attachment structure coupled to the movable stage and configured to secure a payload under the movable stage; a winch disposed in the fuselage; and a tether coupled to the winch and configured to be secured to the payload, wherein the tether is movable through the opening in the stage so as to raise or lower the payload. 2. The UAV of claim 1 , wherein the stage forms a bottom surface of the fuselage when in the lower position. 3. The UAV of claim 1 , further comprising a payload coupling apparatus receptacle in the stage. 4. The UAV of claim 1 , wherein, when the stage is in the lower position, a contour of a perimeter of the stage follows an edge of the lower access opening. 5. The UAV of claim 1 , wherein the fuselage includes an upper access opening for receiving the payload in the cargo bay. 6. The UAV of claim 5 , wherein the stage includes an articulating portion that is movable between an operating position and an unblocking position that provides a path between the upper access opening and the cargo bay. 7. The UAV of claim 1 , further comprising a control system configured to: operate a motor to move the stage between the lower position and the upper position, and determine a first change in motor current corresponding to a position of the stage where a bottom of the payload is aligned with the bottom of the fuselage. 8. The UAV of claim 7 , wherein the motor is part of an actuator that moves the stage between the lower position and upper position. 9. The UAV of claim 7 , wherein the motor is coupled to the winch, and movement of the stage is carried out by retracting or unwinding the tether. 10. A method comprising: securing a payload under an attachment structure that is coupled to a fuselage of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) and is movable from an upper position that is above a cargo bay formed by a cavity in the fuselage to a lower position that is at the bottom of the fuselage; moving the attachment structure relative to the fuselage, while the payload is secured under the attachment structure, to place the attachment structure in a flight position, wherein the flight position of the attachment structure aligns a lower surface of the payload with the bottom of the fuselage; and flying the UAV with the payload secured under the attachment structure while the attachment structure is in the flight position. 11. The method of claim 10 , wherein moving the attachment structure to the flight position includes, with the payload secured to the attachment structure, lifting the attachment structure relative to the fuselage. 12. The method of claim 11 , wherein moving the attachment structure to the flight position is carried out while the UAV is in a hover flight mode. 13. The method of claim 10 , wherein the attachment structure is secured to a movable stage, and wherein moving the attachment structure relative to the fuselage includes moving the movable stage relative to the fuselage. 14. The method of claim 13 , wherein moving the attachment structure to the flight position includes, with the payload disposed on a support surface, lowering the fuselage until the lower surface of the payload is aligned with the bottom of the fuselage. 15. The method of claim 13 , wherein, with the payload and the fuselage disposed on a support surface, securing the payload to the attachment structure and moving the attachment structure to the flight position are concurrently carried out by lowering the stage toward the payload until the payload is secured to the attachment structure. 16. The method of claim 13 , wherein moving the attachment structure to the flight position includes: operating a motor to move the stage, identifying a first change in motor current while moving the stage, and based on the first change in motor current, determining that the attachment structure is in the flight position. 17. A method comprising: flying an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) to a delivery location while a payload is secured under a movable stage and is positioned in a cargo bay of a fuselage of the UAV; moving the stage with respect to the fuselage, while the payload is secured under the movable stage, to a lower position in which the stage is at the bottom of the fuselage; lowering the payload on a tether and releasing the payload; and flying the UAV away from the delivery location with the stage in the lower position. 18. The method of claim 17 , wherein the stage is moved to the lower position before the payload is lowered and released. 19. The method of claim 17 , wherein, while the UAV is flying to the delivery location, the stage is disposed at an identified flight position where a lower surface of the payload is substantially aligned with the bottom of the fuselage.
