Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A mainframe workflow method manages workflow tasks in a mainframe workflow management system. The method includes selecting, by a user terminal, a target mainframe computing system from a plurality of target mainframe computing systems for execution of a mainframe workflow process having a plurality of workflow tasks, and transmitting the plurality of workflow tasks to the selected target mainframe computing system over a communication network. The method also includes storing the plurality of workflow tasks, in a workflow file repository at the target mainframe computing system, and checking the plurality of workflow tasks for inter-task dependencies. The method further includes executing the mainframe workflow process, including selected workflow tasks from the plurality of workflow tasks, by the selected target mainframe computing system, where the selected workflow tasks include user-created workflow tasks and a predetermined number of computer-generated default workflow tasks that are automatically generated having assigned default values.

What is claimed is: 1. A mainframe workflow method for managing workflow tasks in a mainframe workflow management system, the method comprising: selecting, by a user terminal, more than one target mainframe computing system from a plurality of target mainframe computing systems for execution of a mainframe workflow process composed of a plurality of workflow tasks, wherein the mainframe workflow process comprises workflow software and the workflow software comprises the plurality of workflow tasks; transmitting the mainframe workflow process composed of the plurality of workflow tasks to the more than one target mainframe computing system over a communication network; storing the mainframe workflow process, including the plurality of workflow tasks, in a workflow file repository at the more than one target mainframe computing system; checking the plurality of workflow tasks for inter-task dependencies among the plurality of workflow tasks; associating the plurality of workflow tasks with the inter-task dependencies; asynchronously executing, in a dependency order that is based on the inter-task dependencies, the plurality of workflow tasks by the more than one target mainframe computing system; and determining whether success criteria have been met by a program code that has been received from the more than one target mainframe computing system in response to the executing, wherein the success criteria correspond to a completion code that determines a status of a selected workflow task from among the plurality of workflow tasks, wherein the selected workflow tasks include a predetermined number of computer-generated default workflow tasks that are automatically generated having assigned default values, wherein the predetermined number of computer-generated default workflow tasks comprises at least one workflow task that is automatically assigned a default value that is based on past actions taken by a user, and wherein the method refreshes all task statuses and rechecks the plurality of workflow tasks for inter-task dependencies among the plurality of workflow tasks when the inter-task dependencies among the plurality of workflow tasks have not been successfully met. 2. The mainframe workflow method according to claim 1 , wherein at least one of the predetermined number of computer-generated default workflow tasks being automatically assigned a default value based on preferences previously set by the user. 3. The mainframe workflow method according to claim 1 , wherein at least one of the predetermined number of computer-generated default workflow tasks being automatically assigned a default value based on mainframe workflow management system default values. 4. The mainframe workflow method according to claim 1 , wherein the selected workflow tasks are each associated with the success criteria that includes information used to determine whether the selected workflow task has executed successfully or not. 5. The mainframe workflow method according to claim 1 , wherein the completion code is automatically computer-generated. 6. The mainframe workflow method according to claim 1 , wherein the completion code is created by a user via the user terminal. 7. The mainframe workflow method according to claim 1 , further comprising: determining whether the inter-task dependencies among the plurality of workflow tasks have been successfully met. 8. The mainframe workflow method according to claim 7 , the executing the mainframe workflow process, including selected workflow tasks from the plurality of workflow tasks, by the selected target mainframe computing system proceeds only when the inter-task dependencies among the plurality of workflow tasks have been successfully met. 9. The mainframe workflow method according to claim 1 , wherein an electronic notification is sent to the user of the user terminal when an error occurs during the execution of one or more of the plurality of workflow tasks. 10. The mainframe workflow method according to claim 1 , further comprising: receiving, via a user interface, at least one from among a command and a selection of data; and reviewing a particular workflow task of the plurality of workflow tasks by the user of the user terminal by selectively displaying on a display a source of the particular workflow task before or after the particular workflow task has been executed. 11. The mainframe workflow method according to claim 1 , wherein one or more of the plurality of workflow tasks are selectively monitored, modified, and controlled individually by the user of the user terminal. 12. A non-transitory computer readable storage medium that includes a computer program, which when executed by a processor, performs operations for managing workflow tasks in a mainframe workflow management system, the non-transitory computer readable storage medium comprising: selecting, by a user terminal, more than one target mainframe computing system from a plurality of target mainframe computing systems for execution of a mainframe workflow process composed of a plurality of workflow tasks, wherein the mainframe workflow process comprises workflow software and the workflow software comprises the plurality of workflow tasks; transmitting the mainframe workflow process composed of the plurality of workflow tasks to the more than one target mainframe computing system over a communication network; storing the mainframe workflow process, including the plurality of workflow tasks, in a workflow file repository at the more than one target mainframe computing system, checking the plurality of workflow tasks for inter-task dependencies among the plurality of workflow tasks; associating the plurality of workflow tasks with the inter-task dependencies; asynchronously executing, in a dependency order that is based on the inter-task dependencies, the plurality of workflow tasks by the more than one target mainframe computing system; and determining whether success criteria have been met by a program code that has been received from the more than one target mainframe computing system in response to the executing, wherein the success criteria correspond to a completion code that determines a status of a selected workflow task from among the plurality of workflow tasks, wherein the selected workflow tasks include a predetermined number of computer-generated default workflow tasks that are automatically generated having assigned default values, wherein the predetermined number of computer-generated default workflow tasks comprises at least one workflow task that is automatically assigned a default value that is based on past actions taken by a user, and wherein the method refreshes all task statuses and rechecks the plurality of workflow tasks for inter-task dependencies among the plurality of workflow tasks when the inter-task dependencies among the plurality of workflow tasks have not been successfully met. 13. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium according to claim 12 , wherein the selected workflow tasks are each associated with the success criteria that includes information used to determine whether a particular selected workflow task has been successfully executed or not. 14. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium according to claim 12 , further comprising: determining whether the inter-task dependencies among the plurality of workflow tasks have been successfully met. 15. A mainframe workflow management system for creating and managing workflow tasks, the system comprising: a processor; a memory; and a transmitter/receiver that transm
