Mechanisms for authenticating a connection between a user device and a streaming media content device comprising: identifying a collection of candidate streaming media content devices based on beacon(s) detected by a user device; receiving an indication that one of the content devices is to be selected for connection to the user device; transmitting instructions to the content devices to broadcast a signal, wherein the signal broadcast by each of the content devices contains a value that indicates an identity of the content device; receiving, from the user device, an audio signal that includes a detected signal; processing the audio signal to extract the value indicating the identity of a particular content device associated with the detected signal contained in the received audio signal; identifying the particular content device based on the determined value; and transmitting an indication that the user device and the particular content device are authenticated to communicate.

What is claimed is: 1. A method for device authentication, the method comprising: transmitting, by a media device to a computing device over a communications network, a first signal that indicates an identity of the media device; receiving, by the media device, an indication that the media device has been selected using the computing device for presenting media content; in response to receiving the indication that the media device has been selected using the computing device for presenting the media content, transmitting, by the media device, a second signal directly to the computing device without using the communications network. wherein the second signal authenticates a connection between the media device and the computing device, the authenticated connection permitting streaming video media content or streaming audio media content indicated at the computing device to be presented by the media device, and the second signal includes a device identifier associated with the media device; and presenting the media content using the media device in response to authenticating the connection between the media device and the computing device. 2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first signal is a beacon that includes a name associated with the media device. 3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first signal is a beacon that includes a location of the media device. 4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first signal is a beacon that includes device information associated with the media device. 5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first signal is transmitted to the computing device over the communications network at a particular frequency. 6. The method of claim 1 , further comprises presenting an interface to indicate that the connection has been established between the computing device and the media device in which the computing device and the media device have been authenticated to communicate with each other. 7. A method for device authentication, the method comprising: transmitting, to a computing device over a communications network, a first signal that corresponds to an identity of a media device; receiving an indication that the media device has been selected using the computing device for presenting media content; in response to receiving the indication that the media device has been selected using the computing device for presenting the media content, transmitting a second signal to the computing device that authenticates a connection between the media device and the computing device, wherein; the second signal includes a device identifier associated with the media device; the second signal is an audio signal having a particular duration and a particular frequency; and a PIN specific to the media device is embedded within the audio signal; and presenting the media content using the media device in response to authenticating the connection between the media device and the computing device. 8. The method of claim 7 , further comprising presenting an interface on a display associated with the media device that prompts a user of the media device to configure the PIN specific to the media device. 9. The method of claim 7 , further comprising, in response to determining that the PIN specific to the media device was not extracted from the received audio signal, presenting an interface on a display associated with the media device that prompts a manual entry of the PIN. 10. The method of claim 7 , further comprising receiving information relating to a relay endpoint to the computing device and the media device that corresponds to the PIN. 11. A system for device authentication, the system comprising: a hardware processor of a media device that: transmits, to a computing device over a communications network, a first signal that corresponds to an identity of the media device; receives an indication that the media device has been selected using the computing device for presenting media content; in response to receiving the indication that the media device has been selected using the computing device for presenting the media content, transmits a second signal directly to the computing device without using the communications network, wherein: the second signal authenticates a connection between the media device and the computing device, the authenticated connection permitting streaming video media content or streaming audio media content indicated at the computing device to be presented by the media device, and the second signal includes a device identifier associated with the media device; and presents the media content using the media device in response to authenticating the connection between the media device and the computing device. 12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the first signal is a beacon that includes a name associated with the media device. 13. The system of claim 11 , wherein the first signal is a beacon that includes a location of the media device. 14. The system of claim 11 , wherein the first signal is a beacon that includes device information associated with the media device. 15. The system of claim 11 , wherein the first signal is transmitted to the computing device over the communications network at a particular frequency. 16. The system of claim 11 , wherein the hardware processor further presents an interface to indicate that the connection has been established between the computing device and the media device in which the computing device and the media device have been authenticated to communicate with each other. 17. A system for device authentication, the system comprising: a hardware processor of a media device that: transmits, to a computing device over a communications network, a first signal that corresponds to an identity of the media device; receives an indication that the media device has been selected using the computing device for presenting media content; in response to receiving the indication that the media device has been selected using the computing device for presenting the media content, transmits a second signal to the computing device that authenticates a connection between the media device and the computing device, the second signal includes a device identifier associated with the media device; the second signal is an audio signal having a particular duration and a particular frequency; and a PIN specific to the media device is embedded within the audio signal; and presents the media content using the media device in response to authenticating the connection between the media device and the computing device. 18. The system of claim 17 , wherein the hardware processor further presents an interface on a display associated with the media device that prompts a user of the media device to configure the PIN specific to the media device. 19. The system of claim 17 , wherein the hardware processor further, in response to determining that the PIN specific to the media device was not extracted from the received audio signal, presents an interface on a display associated with the media device that prompts a manual entry of the PIN. 20. The system of claim 17 , wherein the hardware processor further receives information relating to a relay endpoint to the computing device and the media device that corresponds to the PIN. 21. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium containing computer-executable instructions that, when executed by a processor, cause the processor to perform a method comprising: transmitting, to a computing
