The present invention relates to granular composite density enhancement, and related methods and compositions. The applications where these properties are valuable include but are not limited to: 1) additive manufacturing (“3D printing”) involving metallic, ceramic, cermet, polymer, plastic, or other dry or solvent-suspended powders or gels, 2) concrete materials, 3) solid propellant materials, 4) cermet materials, 5) granular armors, 6) glass-metal and glass-plastic mixtures, and 7) ceramics comprising (or manufactured using) granular composites.

The invention claimed is: 1. A granular composite comprising a disordered, flowable, powder or suspension of at least two groups of particles of different average volumes, where for at least two of the groups of particles, i) the average volume of the larger of two groups adjacent by average volume is no more than 10,000 times the average volume of the other group, ii) the dividing volume between at least two adjacent groups is a smallest minimum point in a passing curve or similar size distribution representative of the composite, and where the value of the passing curve or similar size distribution at the smallest minimum point between the two groups is no greater than 75% of the value of the passing curve or similar size distribution at the largest maximum of either of the two groups, iii) on average, (a) the powder comprises particles from the larger of the two groups adjacent by average volume contact at least one other particle from the same group, or (b) the suspension comprises particles from the larger of the two groups adjacent by average volume have as nearest neighbors at least one other particle from the same group, iv) the two groups of particles adjacent by average volume do not spatially phase separate during a period of flow, and v) no region of space that is contained entirely within the granular composite and is of height, width, and depth that are all at least ten diameters of the largest particle of the larger of the two said groups is filled with only particles of either the smaller or larger groups, and further where in each region of such size, there are non-negligible quantities of three particle arrangements consisting of one particle from the smaller of the groups and two particles from the larger of the groups such that the smaller particle is; for a powder, both in contact with and separating the two particles from the larger of the groups; and for a suspension, both has the two larger particles as nearest neighbors but is separating them such that they are not in contact. 2. The granular composite of claim 1 , where the average particle volume of the particle group of larger size is between 25 and 2000 times the average particle volume of the particle group of smaller size. 3. The granular composite of claim 2 , wherein (a) the powder comprises the composite can exhibit a porosity of less than 25%, where the porosity that the powder can exhibit is the minimum porosity of the disordered compacted powder whereby the granular composite remains flowable, that is, it has not been compacted by a method or with force sufficient such that particles are deformed or the powder has become a solid; or (b) the suspension comprises the composite can exhibit a porosity of 25% or less, where the porosity that the suspension can exhibit is the minimum porosity of the suspension such that it will still flow. 4. The granular composite of claim 1 , where the at least two groups are comprised of metal particles, or where one of the groups is comprised of metal and the other of ceramic particles. 5. The granular composite of claim 2 , where the at least two groups are comprised of metal particles, or where one of the groups is comprised of metal and the other of ceramic particles. 6. The granular composite of claim 3 , where the at least two groups are comprised of metal particles, or where one of the groups is comprised of metal and the other of ceramic particles. 7. The granular composite of claim 1 , wherein the suspension comprises at least two groups of metal particles immersed in a solvent, liquid, gel or paste. 8. The granular composite of claim 2 , wherein the suspension comprises at least two groups of metal particles immersed in a solvent, liquid, gel or paste. 9. The granular composite of claim 3 , wherein the suspension comprises at least two groups of metal particles immersed in a solvent, liquid, gel or paste. 10. The granular composite of claim 1 , where the composite comprises at least three groups of particles, each group representing at least 2% of the total relative volume of three of the groups. 11. The granular composite of claim 2 , where the composite comprises at least three groups of particles, each group representing at least 2% of the total relative volume of three of the groups. 12. The granular composite of claim 3 , where the composite comprises at least three groups of particles, each group representing at least 2% of the total relative volume of three of the groups.
