An agricultural trench depth sensing system having a trench implement adapted to be disposed in a soil trench opened in a soil surface. In one embodiment an ultrasonic sensor detects a distance to an upper surface of said trench implement or a target disposed thereon. In another embodiment, said trench implement includes one or more fingers which rotate with respect to said trench implement to detect the soil surface relative to said trench implement. In another embodiment, said trench implement includes side sensors for detecting the sidewall of the soil trench.

The invention claimed is: 1. An agricultural trench depth sensing system, comprising: a trench implement for placement in a soil trench opened in a soil surface; a first ground engaging finger disposed on said trench implement and adapted to engage a first sidewall surface of said soil trench; optionally, a second ground engaging finger disposed on said trench implement and adapted to engage a second sidewall surface of said soil trench; and at least one sensor disposed on or in said trench implement for generating a signal based on a position of at least one of said first ground engaging finger and said optional second ground engaging finger relative to said trench implement; and one of: i. said first ground engaging finger and said optional second ground engaging finger not being connected to said trench implement via an arm, and said at least one sensor generating a first signal based on a position of said first ground engaging finger, and optionally for generating a second signal based on a position of said optional second ground engaging finger; and ii. said first ground engaging finger and said optional second ground engaging finger being connected together via an arm that is connected to said trench implement; and one of: A. said at least one sensor measuring a height of said first ground engaging finger and wherein said optional second ground engaging finger is above said trench implement, and wherein said first ground engaging finger and said optional second ground engaging finger are connected to said arm through an angular displacement sensor to facilitate rotation about an axis parallel to said trench implement by said first ground engaging finger and said optional second ground engaging finger; B. said first ground engaging finger and said optional second ground engaging finger connected via a pivot to said arm to facilitate rotation about an axis parallel to said trench implement; and C. said arm is flexible and is connected to a fixed attachment that is connected to said trench implement, and said at least one sensor measuring a distance of said arm from said trench implement. 2. The agricultural trench depth sensing system of claim 1 having said second ground engaging finger. 3. The agricultural trench depth sensing system of claim 1 , wherein said trench implement is a seed firmer. 4. The agricultural trench depth sensing system of claim 1 , wherein said agricultural trench depth sensing system is disposed on an agricultural implement, said agricultural implement comprising: a frame; a trench opener for opening said soil trench in said soil surface; and wherein said trench implement is disposed in said soil trench. 5. The agricultural trench depth sensing system of claim 1 , having said first and said second ground engaging finger disposed on said trench implement and said at least one sensor comprises a first sensor for generating a first signal based on a position of said first ground engaging finger and a second sensor for generating a second signal based on a position of said second ground engaging finger. 6. The agricultural trench depth sensing system of claim 5 , wherein said first sensor and said second sensor are each a rotary encoder. 7. The agricultural trench depth sensing system of claim 5 , wherein said first sensor and said second sensor are each a Hall effect sensor. 8. The agricultural trench depth sensing system of claim 5 , wherein said first ground engaging finger and said second ground engaging finger are connected through a common bracket to said trench implement. 9. The agricultural trench depth sensing system of claim 1 , wherein said first ground engaging finger and said second ground engaging finger are connected together via an arm that is connected to said trench implement, said arm connected to said at least one sensor, said at least one sensor measuring a height of said first ground engaging finger and said second ground engaging finger above said trench implement, and said first ground engaging finger and said second ground engaging finger connected to said arm through an angular displacement sensor to facilitate rotation about an axis parallel to said trench implement by said first ground engaging finger and said second ground engaging finger. 10. The agricultural trench depth sensing system of claim 1 , wherein said first ground engaging finger and said second ground engaging finger are connected together via an arm that is connected to said trench implement, and wherein said first ground engaging finger and said second ground engaging finger are connected through a pivot to said arm to facilitate rotation about an axis parallel to said trench implement. 11. The agricultural trench depth sensing system of claim 10 , wherein said at least one sensor is an angular displacement sensor. 12. The agricultural trench depth sensing system of claim 1 , wherein said first ground engaging finger and said second ground engaging finger are connected together via a flexible arm that is connected to said trench implement, said flexible arm connected to a fixed attachment that is connected to said trench implement, and wherein said at least one sensor is a Hall effect sensor for measuring a distance of said arm from said implement.
