Official abstract text for this publication.
A method for controlling vehicle motion is described. The method includes accessing a set of control signals including a measured vehicle speed value associated with a movement of a vehicle. A control signal associated with user-induced input is also accessed. The method compares the measured vehicle speed value with a predetermined vehicle speed threshold value to achieve a speed value threshold approach status, and then compares the set of values to achieve a user-induced input threshold value approach status. The method monitors a state of a valve within the vehicle suspension damper, and determines a control mode for the vehicle suspension damper. The method also regulates damping forces within the vehicle suspension damper.

What we claim is: 1. A method for adjusting a suspension damper based upon sensor input, said method comprising: receiving said sensor input corresponding to a user-induced event, wherein said user-induced event is action by a user of a vehicle to physically move a vehicle component with respect to said vehicle, wherein movement of said vehicle component by said user of said vehicle controls operation of said vehicle to which said suspension damper is coupled, wherein said sensor input corresponding to said user-induced event is obtained by determining an acceleration value of said vehicle component as said vehicle component is moved with respect to said vehicle by said user of said vehicle; and changing a valve setting in said suspension damper based upon said sensor input. 2. The method for adjusting a suspension damper based upon sensor input as recited in claim 1 , wherein said sensor input corresponding to said user-induced event is generated by a sensor coupled to said vehicle. 3. The method for adjusting a suspension damper based upon sensor input as recited in claim 1 , wherein said sensor input corresponding to said user-induced event is generated by a sensor comprising an accelerometer. 4. The method for adjusting a suspension damper based upon sensor input as recited in claim 1 , wherein said sensor input corresponding to said user-induced event is generated by a sensor comprising a gyrometer. 5. The method for adjusting a suspension damper based upon sensor input as recited in claim 1 , wherein said sensor input corresponding to said user-induced event is generated by a sensor comprising an accelerometer and a gyrometer. 6. The method for adjusting a suspension damper based upon sensor input as recited in claim 1 , wherein said sensor input corresponding to said user-induced event is generated by a plurality of sensors which are comprised of an accelerometer and a gyrometer. 7. The method for adjusting a suspension damper based upon sensor input as recited in claim 1 , wherein said sensor input corresponding to said user-induced event is generated by a sensor selected from the group consisting of: turning a steering wheel, pressing/releasing a brake pedal, pressing/releasing a gas pedal, a measured velocity value of a turning of a steering wheel, a brake's on/off status, velocities associated with pressing down on said brake pedal, pressing/releasing a throttle pedal, velocities associated with pressing down on said throttle pedal, a difference in a position of said brake pedal before and after being pressed, a difference in a position of said throttle pedal before and after being pressed, an absolute value corresponding to said position of said brake pedal and an absolute value corresponding to said position of said throttle pedal. 8. The method for adjusting a suspension damper based upon sensor input as recited in claim 1 , wherein said sensor input corresponding to said user-induced event is generated by comparing said user-induced event with at least one user-induced input threshold value. 9. The method for adjusting a suspension damper based upon sensor input as recited in claim 1 , wherein said sensor input corresponding to said user-induced event is generated by comparing said user-induced event with at least one user-induced input threshold value wherein said at least one user-induced input threshold value resides in a database. 10. The method for adjusting a suspension damper based upon sensor input as recited in claim 1 , wherein said sensor input corresponding to said user-induced event is generated by comparing said user-induced event with at least one user-induced input threshold value wherein said at least one user-induced input threshold value resides in a database external to a control system coupled to said suspension damper.
