Disclosed herein are novel or improved microporous battery separator membranes, separators, batteries including such separators, methods of making such membranes, separators, and/or batteries, and/or methods of using such membranes, separators and/or batteries. Further disclosed are laminated multilayer polyolefin membranes with exterior layers comprising one or more polyethylenes, which exterior layers are designed to provide an exterior surface that has a low pin removal force. Further disclosed are battery separator membranes having increased electrolyte absorption capacity at the separator/electrode interface region, which may improve cycling. Further disclosed are battery separator membranes having improved adhesion to any number of coatings. Also described are battery separator membranes having a tunable thermal shutdown where the onset temperature of thermal shutdown may be raised or lowered and the rate of thermal shutdown may be changed or increased. Also disclosed are multilayer battery separator membranes having enhanced web handling performance during manufacturing processes and coating operations.

We claim: 1. A dry process membrane comprising: two exterior layers each comprising polyethylene; and at least one interior layer that comprises polypropylene, wherein the membrane may be formed by at least one of lamination or co-extrusion, wherein the membrane has a pin removal compared force which is at least 15% less than the pin removal force of a known membrane having an assigned pin removal force of 0%, wherein the at least one inner layer has a pore size that is half of or less than half of a pore size of at least one of the two exterior layers, and wherein a coating is applied to one or both of the two exterior layers. 2. The dry process membrane of claim 1 , wherein the membrane is formed by lamination. 3. The dry process membrane of claim 1 , wherein the membrane is formed by co-extrusion. 4. The dry process membrane of claim 1 , wherein a coating is applied to one of the two exterior layers. 5. The dry process membrane of claim 1 , wherein a coating is applied to both of the two exterior layers. 6. The dry process membrane of claim 1 , wherein the coating comprises ceramic particles. 7. The dry process membrane of claim 1 , wherein the coating has an adhesion of ≥20 N/m. 8. The dry process membrane of claim 1 , wherein the membrane has a structure selected from the following group: PE/PP/PE, PE/PP/PE/PP/PE, PE/PP/PP/PE, PE/PE/PP/PE, PE/PP/PE/PE, and/or PE/PE/PP/PE/PE. 9. The dry process membrane of claim 1 , having a structure PE/PP/PE. 10. The dry process membrane of claim 9 , wherein the layers of the PE/PP/PP structure have a thickness ratio from 5/90/5 to 45/10/45. 11. A battery separator comprising the dry process membrane of claim 1 . 12. The battery separator of claim 11 , having an onset temperature of thermal shutdown that is less than 135° C. 13. A battery separator comprising the coated dry process membrane of claim 1 . 14. The battery separator of claim 13 , having an onset temperature of thermal shutdown that is less than 135° C. 15. A lithium ion battery comprising the battery separator of claim 11 . 16. A lithium ion battery comprising the battery separator of claim 13 .
